Starting each of the feature events of the Memorial Day weekend, the Southern Regional Racing Series and drivers honored our veterans and those currently serving our country with each driver waving an American Flag during the 4-wide salute.
“Is it true”? That’s what Ray McElhiney wanted to know when asked what he thought about taking the PPM Race Products Southern Regional Racing Series checkered flag at Thunderhill Raceway Summertown, TN, Saturday night. McElhiney, of Pulaski, TN, set quick time out of the 28 entries and earned the pole starting position for the 30-lap, $2,000 to win feature race.
McElhiney and Tony Morris (Murfreesboro, TN) brought the field to green followed by Eric Hickerson (Linden, TN), Josh Putnam (Florence, AL), Jay Brinkley (Raus, TN) and Anthony Burroughs (Athens, AL). McElhiney would take the lead on the first lap with Morris in second, Hickerson in third and Josh Putnam in fourth. McElhiney would lead flag to flag. The racing was good even though the track locked down early and very little passing was done. Tony Morris would finish the race in second place which moved him into the lead in the series points. Morris was followed by Eric Hickerson, Josh Putnam, Jay Brinkley, Anthony Burroughs, David Gentry (Lewisburg, TN), and Ben Kittrell (Mt. Pleasant, TN). McElhiney earned the Star Grafix Fast Time Award of a $100 Certificate toward a wrap, Shy Suspension and Base Racing Fuels Feature Winner Awards.
The top nine drivers along with McElhiney that locked into the feature through qualifying were Tony Morris, Josh Putnam, Eric Hickerson, Jay Brinkley, Anthony Burroughs, Seth Daniel (Collinwood, TN), Ben Kittrell (Mt. Pleasant, TN), and Donald Johns Donald Johns (Summertown, TN). The rest of the 24 car field was made up from the 3 b-mains. Winners of the b-mains were Jerry Jackson (Tuscumbia, AL), Jacob Grizzle (Blairsville, GA) and Mark Fields (Lawrenceburg, TN).
Brinkley Farm’s 10th place award winner, Seth Daniel will receive $50. DBR Performance Starters’ 12th place award winner, Jacob France (Mt Juliet, TN), receives a $75 gift certificate. Double H Race Fabrication’s 15th place award winner, Jacob Grizzle, will receive a $50 off certificate. Series Provisional’s went to Jimmy Tucker and Steven Ashby.
