North Central Arkansas Speedway, 6-20-14
By Scott Ramos

Racin’ for a Cure was the theme for the evening, as North Central Arkansas Speedway again played host to the annual fundraising event benefiting the American Cancer Society. A strong field of cars entered the pits in support of the effort, and a generous crowd came out for the evening’s program which raised almost $3000 towards the fight against cancer.

After an intermission that had cancer survivors and their caregivers taking a victory lap around the track, and that also had many of the evenings race entry’s on track for photos and autographs, the Hornet feature race got started with Josh Williamson and Corey Howell door to door. Lap one went in the books with the two cars still side by side at the line before Williamson cleared Howell to take the lead. Howell pulled up even with Williamson over the course of the race but was unable to complete a pass on the leader until lap fourteen when Howell got his car out in front exiting turn two and beat Williamson back to the line to take the win.

Hornet Final Results: 1) #73 Corey Howell,  2) #114 Josh Williamson,  3) #173 Shannon Howell

The Pure Stock feature race went green with Kendall Hasty and Matthew Seaman out in front. Hasty took the lead on the bottom of turn two and never looked back, leading from start to finish. A few solo spins brought out the yellow flag on four occasions helping to keep the field close for much of the race. Larry West inherited the second spot after a spin by Seaman on lap four and although he pressured Hasty on several restarts, West settled for second crossing the line in front of Lance Raney who came home third.

The Hobby feature race had Daniel Sisco and Richard Carson on the front row. Carson quickly took the lead entering turn one with Kevin Collins getting past Sisco for the second spot as the cars entered the scorebook on lap one. Collins raced alongside Carson for a pair of laps before falling back slightly on lap five. Collins again challenged Carson on lap nine, getting onto the lead officially on lap ten. Four yellow flags would fly before lap thirteen was officially in the books shuffling up the running order behind the top two cars. Tim Steinhaus was able to hold off Blaine Mattey on the final restart to claim third, and after several challenges for the top spot fell short, Carson took home second as Collins raced to the win.

With $1000 on the line for the win, the USRA B-Modified feature race was paced to the starting flag by Steve Muilenburg with Derek Brown outside the front row. The field raced cleanly through turns one and two but a two car incident in turn four brought on the yellow lights before the first lap was completed. On the second attempt to get running Muilenburg got out in front with Brown settling down in the second spot in front of Kris Jackson in third. Jackson took over second on lap two and pressured Muilenburg in every corner until the caution lights came on for Brown coming to a stop in turn two on lap six. Jackson used the restart to apply even more pressure to Muilenburg and finally moved to the lead using the high side of the track on lap seven. Jason Brigman started inside the fifth row and slowly picked off cars as the laps passed, moving into third on a restart for a single car incident in turn four on lap eight. A pair of cautions dotted the final twenty-two laps of the race allowing for some tight races for position through the field but as the last laps were scored Jackson pulled away for the win. Muilenburg finished second and Brigman ended up in third
