SEVENTH HEAVEN: Schatz Wins His seventh FVP Knoxville Nationals in Historic Fashion
Tony Stewart Racing driver charges from Last Chance Showdown to victory lane

KNOXVILLE, Iowa - Aug. 10, 2013 - Donny Schatz didn't just win the 53rd running of the storied FVP Knoxville Nationals on Saturday night at Knoxville Raceway, he turned in one of the greatest performances in the history of sprint car racing on the sport's biggest stage.

After struggling during the Wednesday preliminary feature, Schatz was forced to start Saturday on the outside of the second row in the Last Chance Showdown, or B-main. He won that race to earn the 21st starting position in the $150,000-to-win, 50-lap A-main.

Nobody had ever won the Nationals from deeper than 14th and here was Schatz attempting to win from another area code in his STP Gas Booster J&J. Then, in one of the most dominating runs in World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series history, Schatz picked off car after car until finally, with nine laps to go, he caught and passed leader Brian Brown, who finished second to Schatz for the second consecutive year.
Justin Henderson, Paul McMahan and Chad Kemenah rounded out the top five finishers.

"It was a fun run," said Schatz, of Fargo, N.D., who also turned 36 on Saturday. "We went where we had to, we go to the top, or the bottom, but we couldn't really make the bottom work. I just can't say enough for the STP Gas Booster guys. We tried to win the Speed Sport News World Challenge on Friday night, but we also tried something new with the car to see what we could find. We wanted to get locked in. It put a lot of doubt in a lot of minds because I usually run well on the World Challenge night, but when you're not that good you have nothing to lose testing. I'd rather crash than run 20th or fifth."

Schatz won the LCS on a last lap pass and followed it up by leading the final nine laps of the feature event on Saturday night after he raced under Brown as they exited turn two.

The victory in the LCS moved Schatz into the 21st starting position in the $150,000 finale, seven positions deeper than when Steve Kinser won in 1995 and when Jerry Richert Jr. won in 1962.

It didn't make any difference to Schatz. After a dramatic salute to the crowd that featured more than 50 vehicles on track, including support vehicles, and several pyrotechnic booms, it was simply time to race. After the initial green a red flag was quickly displayed for a flip by Stevie Smith in turn one and another quick delay was marked on the second lap as Cody Darrah spun in turn two.

When the field restarted Schatz was 15th and on the move working the bottom. Eight laps later he was running eighth and challenging Knoxville legend, Danny Lasoski, who held the battle for two more laps before Schatz powered past him. Another 8 laps and another position for Schatz, who was then running sixth before a caution brought out by Ian Madsen.

Schatz restarted behind Brown who led the race virtually unchallenged over Joey Saldana who held a strong grip on the second spot.

Five laps later when the red flew at the midpoint of the feature for a fuel stop the top of the order remained the same while Schatz had moved up to the fifth position. The teams changed tires and anything else they thought could help them improve their odds at winning the historic event.

On lap 27 Brown still led and was pulling a gap over second place Saldana, meanwhile, Schatz began working on Henderson for the third position and two laps later had successfully sieged the position. On lap 31, he had caught Saldana as the charge continued. Meanwhile, upfront Brown enjoyed a lead of over three seconds. Saldana did not have enough to hold off Schatz and dropped to third.

On lap 34, Schatz had virtually erased the three-second lead that Brown had enjoyed and still pressed forward. Brown fought valiantly and for seven laps held onto the lead and fended off the charges. On lap 41, however, he couldn't hold off Schatz anymore.

A pass from the bottom of turn four took the wind out of Brown faithful in the packed grandstands as Schatz used the remaining nine laps to cruise to victory. It was the 16th A- Main appearance of Schatz's career. He Has now led 177 laps in the FVP Knoxville Nationals, second only to Steve Kinser's 302 laps led.
Brown and Henderson tightened up with three to go for a great battle for second. The two raced side-by-side for a pair of laps before Brown secured the position entering turn three on the final corner and took the stripe with another painful second place finish.

"We're disappointed, that's the biggest thing, but we don't take a second place at the Knoxville Nationals for granted," said Brown, the Grain Valley, Mo., native and driver of the FVP/Casey's General Stores Maxim who collected $75,000 for his effort. "We could finish third, fourth or miss the show. My car went away at the end, our car went tight and then loose and I'm not sure if I used up my tires or what happened. Hats off to Donny Schatz his team they did a great job and he's a true champion. We'll keep plugging away and come back next year and either break his legs or beat him."

Henderson found third position bittersweet with a second so close at hand.

"I'm a little bummed to run third," said Henderson, of Sioux Falls, S.D., and a three-time feature starter in the nationals. "It's awesome and it's an honor, but if you would've told me coming in that I would run third coming into this place, I'd have thought that's sweet. But when it's right there as a driver, you want to win, especially when it's $150,000. When it finally sinks in tomorrow when we're on the drive home I'll probably be cheering for myself. "

The championship shifts into high gear beginning on Tuesday night at Junction Motor Speedway in McCool Junction, Neb. Because of the unique format, drivers at the Nationals were awarded a flat 75 points in the championship standings, meaning Daryn Pittman continues to lead over Schatz by 71.

GRAND LARSON: Kyle Larson Charges to Qualifying Night Victory at FVP Knoxville Nationals
Win puts Californian into $50-lap, $150,000-to-win main event; Tatnell captures Speed Sport News World Challenge

KNOXVILLE, Iowa - Aug. 9, 2013 - Kyle Larson powered to victory on Friday's final qualifying night for the 53rd FVP Knoxville Nationals and in the process earned a spot in Saturday's $150,000-to-win, 50-lap main event at Knoxville Raceway.

Larson, who started his day in a NASCAR Nationwide Car at Watkins Glen International in New York, finished it off by standing atop the podium in victory lane at Knoxville Raceway after he charged past Chad Kemenah on the second lap and drove away, holding off Cap Henry and Kemenah on a late restart to win a Knoxville Nationals preliminary feature for the second consecutive year.

With 26 cars already locked into Saturday's sprint car spectacular - 16 in the A-main and 10 in the Last Chance Showdown - Larson's victory moves him into the 17th starting position for Saturday's 50-lap A-main. Henry, Kemenah and fourth-place finishing Jac Haudenschild also earned positions in Saturday's A-main while the rest of Friday night's competitors will be lined up by order of finish after the 10 cars locked into the Last Chance Showdown.

Larson struggled on his original qualifying night and was outside the locked in top 26 in event points, forcing him to race on Friday night. Larson made the most of a late draw and while much of his competition late in the session were struggling to crack the top 20, Larson posted a 15.901-second lap to qualify fourth.

In his heat race he picked up a pair of spots to finish second and earn a coveted transfer spot to Friday night's feature race.

The feature event opened with a multi-car wreck taking out several competitors towards the rear of the field. A jumbled restart saw Larson struggle but a caution quickly waved again and on the ensuing restart he lunged forward picking up a couple of positions and running tight on Kemenah's tail. Kemenah worked the bottom while Larson worked the top and just one lap later, Kemenah couldn't keep the pace and Larson grabbed the lead.

Larson held the lead for the rest of the event as he worked the top of the track while Henry, Kemenah and Haudenschild jockeyed for position. A caution with 8 laps to go tightened the field, but also gave Larson the clean air he needed to roll away to victory.

"I struggled in lapped traffic," said Larson, of Elk Grove, Calif. "I was really good in clean air, but once I got the car into dirty air, it was pretty tight. Thankfully, that yellow came out because I didn't think I was ever going to get by that lapped car. From there I had clean air, and that was the key to winning."

Kemenah was excited to finish in the top four and earn a position in Saturday's A-main.

"Anything from first to fourth for us is like a feature win to get us into the Knoxville Nationals, now we've got 50 laps to try to go forward. Kyle was so fast in clean air that it didn't matter, he was just really good. I just wanted to make sure that I didn't miss the bottom and seal the tires up. If you seal the tires up here you can go from a hero to a zero in one lap."

Speed Sport News World Challenge
Also earning a starting position in Saturday night's feature by winning the Speed Sport News Knoxville World Challenge was Brooke Tatnell, a native of San Souci, New South Wales, Australia. Tatnell stole the lead from Jason Johnson, who led the first 15 laps before Tatnell took charge. The victory gave Tatnell the option to start 25th on Saturday night's A-main.

"We've been struggling a bit all year and it was just about keeping my composure," said Tatnell, who is still recovering from a non-racing-related foot injury. "When you've had such a bad year you overdrive it and tonight it was just take deep breaths and stay calm. Our car was better in dirty air, but his car was better in clean air. ... There is nothing better than racing against the Outlaws, when you race the best it's the only way you improve yourself. I don't mind getting my butt handed to me, but I don't mind giving them a butt kicking either."

Tim Kaeding charged through the World Challenge field attempting to secure that final spot in the A-main on Saturday night but came up one spot short. He already was locked into Saturday's Last Chance Showdown and will start Saturday fifth in the Last Chance Showdown.

KNOXVILLE RACEWAY NOTEBOOK
NOTES: Chad Kemenah was the fastest qualifier around the half-mile semi-banked oval with a time of 15.762 seconds ... James McFadden, Jac Haudenschild, Davey Heskin, Randy Hannagan, Robby Wolfgang and Jeff Swindell won heat races.

HEARTBREAK: Sammy Swindell faced heartbreak after leading his LCS in Friday's event from green to checkered, but started running out of fuel as he entered turn one on the final lap. Swindell fell to third, but remained in transfer spot as his car was completely out of gas. Swindell thought he was destined for the night's feature event, until he crossed the scales two pounds light, leading to a disqualification and a sixth-place starting position in the E-Main on Saturday night. Also struggling to qualify for the event was 2005 event winner Kraig Kinser, who will start 17th in the C-Main.

ALPHABET GAME: Most of the rest of the Outlaws have an easier Saturday night planned with the Craig Dollansky, Donny Schatz and Jason sides all starting the Last Chance Showdown while the rest of the series top drivers have secured positions in the feature event.

POINTS: World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series championship standings will be unaffected this week as the drivers will be awarded a flat 75 points due to the unique format of the FVP Knoxville Nationals. Daryn Pittman continues to lead Donny Schatz by 71 points.

Brown Delivers Huge Win on Night 2 at FVP Knoxville Nationals
Last year’s runner-up earns front row spot alongside point man Saldana

KNOXVILLE, Iowa - Aug. 8, 2013 - Brian Brown charged to victory on Thursday's 53rd FVP Knoxville Nationals qualifying night at Knoxville Raceway, putting him on the front row alongside Joey Saldana for Saturday night's $150,000-to-win main event.

Kerry Madsen was second with Kevin Swindell, Roger Crockett and Saldana rounding out the top five. Saldana also led qualifying and finished fourth in his heat race to earn the pole position for the biggest sprint car race in the world on Saturday night.

Brown started the feature event fifth, but quickly worked his way through the field. Two laps in, Brown restarted second after a caution brought out by Jon Agan, who slowed off of turn four. On the restart Brown threw a slide job at Crockett and both he and Madsen advanced to run one-two.

Immediately after the top three crossed the line, caution flew for a spinning Brian Paulus. Event and track rules state that the cars that crossed the line would remain in that order, while cars that had not would revert to the previous lap, meaning Brown took the lead.

Madsen joined the fight for the lead on lap 9 after a restart as he would slide Brown into turn two and lead down the back stretch. Brown didn't yield and returned the slider into turn three and barely made the pass stick to hold onto the lead.

Brown held a sizeable advantage for several laps after the restart until lapped traffic slowed his progress and let the Keneric Racing entry of Madsen and third-place contender Kevin Swindell close within striking distance.

Brown quickly weaved in and out of traffic uneventfully and collected the win.

"This is probably my biggest win of my career to this point," said the driver of the Casey's General Store Maxim from Grain Valley, Mo. "It's really exciting to put ourselves in position to win the 53rd annual FVP Knoxville Nationals. It's something we hoped for all year long and here we are. We're really excited for Saturday night. We knew we couldn't win the Knoxville Nationals tonight, but you could definitely lose it. We're pretty good, but if we do that I think we've definitely got a chance to win it."

Madsen was able to come within striking distance, but the Aussie was forced to settle for a hard-fought runner-up finish.

"We've been fast all night and we're really happy with the paint scheme, we think it looks fantastic," said Madsen, of St. Marys, N.S.W. "We had a really good run in the feature tonight, we pushed very hard behind Brian tonight, but it just didn't happen. We achieved what we wanted to achieve at this point and we've been in a lot worse positions at the Nationals at this point."

Second generation racer Kevin Swindell rounded out the podium after closing the gap in the final laps on the top two.

"It's exciting I didn't think that I'd be very good this week, but we've run five night and we've been on the podium all five nights I've raced," said Swindell who has limited experience in winged sprint cars. "I definitely miss the dirt a whole more than I thought I did."

Saldana earned the most event points through the qualifying nights to earn the pole for Saturday night's feature, but it didn't come easy. After setting quick time in qualifying and earning 200 points, Saldana found himself in a tough spot in heat racing action. A cut left rear after contact during close quarter racing brought out the caution. The Motter Motorsports team got the tire fixed and Saldana restarted the race from the back of the field. With just two laps down Saldana pushed through the field and earned a transfer spot.

Swindell earned a 7th place starting position for Saturday's nights feature for his body of work throughout Thursday night's preliminary event.

Steve Kinser showed he will be a contender on Saturday. After qualifying third-quick, he finished second in his heat race before fading to a 17th place run, which is good enough to earn a 12th-place starting position in Saturday's A-main.

As is always expected at the Nationals, the Last Chance Showdown was stacked with talent. Danny Lasoski, Cody Darrah, Rico Abreu and Dusty Zomer transferred from the LCS while Brooke Tatnell, Danny Holtgraver, Lance Dewease and Bronson Maeschen among others watched the feature from the stands.

World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series championship standings will be unaffected this week as the drivers will be awarded a flat 75 points due to the unique format of the FVP Knoxville Nationals.
The World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series is back in action Friday night for the third and final night of preliminary action at the 53rd Annual FVP Knoxville Nationals.
