World of Outlaws Late Model Series News & Notes: Tour’s ‘Month of Money’ Ready To Start; Outlaws Birthday Boys; SPEED Television Dates

CONCORD, NC – March 24, 2008 –

HERE WE GO: They’ve had six weeks to recharge and reload since last month’s season-opening World of Outlaws Late Model Series events in Florida.

Now, it’s time for the tour’s stars to really get down to business.

Beginning with this weekend’s inaugural ‘March Through Dixie 100’ at Pike County Speedway in Magnolia, Miss., the WoO LMS will embark full-bore on a 31-week, map-hopping odyssey to determine its 2008 champion.

And no stretch of the campaign will be more lucrative than the ensuing four weeks, which can easily be called the tour’s ‘Month of Money.’ With three high-dollar 100-lappers highlighting the upcoming springtime schedule, there’s a robust $110,000 in first-place cash on the line over the next five WoO LMS races.

“This is a great way for the World of Outlaws Late Model Series to dive into the busiest season we’ve ever had,” said tour director Tim Christman, alluding to the heart of a schedule that currently shows 47 confirmed events at 40 tracks in 22 states and three Canadian provinces. “In a four-week span we’ll run three of our biggest events of the year and also visit two of the top facilities in the country – and best of all, if someone gets hot, they can really build up their bank account.”

The WoO LMS version of the ‘Month of Money’ kicks off with the ‘March Through Dixie 100’ at the three-eighths-mile Pike County Speedway, where a $20,000 winner’s check has been posted. Time trials and heat races are set for Fri., March 28, with the B-Mains and 100-lap headliner scheduled for Sat., March 29.

Another two-day, $20,000-to-win extravaganza is on tap for April 4-5 at Farmer City (Ill.) Raceway, a quarter-mile fairgrounds oval that will host the inaugural ‘Illini 100.’ Following an identical format to Pike County with time trials and heats on Friday night and the last-chance events and A-Main on Saturday night, the ‘Illini 100’ will be the biggest dirt Late Model event ever run in the Land of Lincoln.

Then there’s the third annual Circle K Colossal 100 on April 18-19 at The Dirt Track @ Lowe’s Motor Speedway in Concord, N.C. A stop on the WoO LMS for the second straight season and already acknowledged as one of dirt Late Model racing’s crown-jewel events, the two-day show boasts a first prize of $50,000 from a total purse of $200,000.

Sandwiched between the weekend spectaculars are a pair of 50-lap, $10,000-to-win events on the East Coast. The WoO LMS makes its now-traditional early-season stop at Bill Sawyer’s pristine Virginia Motor Speedway in Jamaica, Va., for the ‘Rumble on the River IV’ on Fri., April 11, then heads to Lernerville Speedway in Sarver, Pa., for the ‘Showdown in Sarvertown’ on Tues., April 15.

MAKE A WISH: WoO LMS stars Clint Smith of Senoia, Ga., and Josh Richards of Shinnston, W.Va., celebrated birthdays in recent days.

Smith, the veteran known as ‘Cat Daddy,’ had more candles on his birthday cake. He turned 43 on March 20.

Richards, meanwhile, left the ranks of “teenage sensation,” turning 20 on March 22.

CALM BEFORE THE STORM: Just two of the 10 drivers committed to following the 2008 WoO LMS turned competitive laps over the weekend.

Clint Smith and Locust Grove, Ga.’s Shane Clanton stayed in their homestate to enter Saturday night’s O’Reilly Southern All-Stars Series event at Lavonia Speedway. Smith scored an 11th-place finish in the A-Main, while Clanton saw his horrid early-season luck continue as he scratched from the feature after running into trouble during his qualifying heat.

Several other drivers had their plans to go racing short-circuited by weather cancellations, including Richards and Rick Eckert of York, Pa. (Maryland’s Hagerstown Speedway on Saturday) and Bluegrass State stars Steve Francis and Darrell Lanigan (Kentucky’s Florence Speedway on Saturday).

Of the 10 WoO LMS regulars, Lanigan, Chub Frank of Bear Lake, Pa., and Brian Shirley of Chatham, Ill., have not entered a single event since the finale of the Alltel DIRTcar Nationals on Feb. 16 at Volusia Speedway Park.

TELEVISION TIME: Six WoO LMS events in 2008 will be televised on SPEED, World Racing Group CEO Brian Carter announced to a live television audience during Sunday night’s edition of Wind Tunnel With Dave Despain on the cable network.

As part of an exclusive broadcast agreement with SPEED that also features the Advance Auto Parts World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series, the WoO LMS package will include five tape-delayed events and one live broadcast.

Highlighting the WoO LMS’s television package is the season-ending ‘Outlaws World Finals’ show at The Dirt Track @ Lowe’s Motor Speedway. SPEED will carry a live broadcast of both the Late Model and Sprint Car action from the four-tenths-mile oval on Sat., Nov. 1, from 8-11 p.m. ET.

The ‘Outlaws World Finals’ and the WoO LMS ‘Firecracker 100’ on June 28 at Lernerville Speedway will be two of five multi-hour, ‘super-sized’ World of Outlaws programs shown on SPEED in 2008. The $40,000-to-win ‘Firecracker 100’ will be taped and then broadcast in a two-hour format on Sun., July 13, from 5-7 p.m. ET.

Other WoO LMS events that will be broadcast on SPEED include the July 9 ‘Gopher 50’ at Deer Creek Speedway in Spring Valley, Minn. (airing on Sat., Aug. 16, from 4-5 p.m. ET); the July 25 event at Eldora Speedway in Rossburg, Ohio (airing on Sat., Aug. 23, from 4-5 p.m. ET); the July 26 program at Sharon Speedway in Hartford, Ohio (airing on Sun., Aug. 31, from 12-1 p.m. ET); and the Aug. 31 ‘Oil Region Labor Day Classic’ at Tri-City Speedway in Franklin, Pa. (airing on Sun., Sept. 7, from 6-7 p.m. ET).

Davenport Goes Flag to Flag for Lavonia Speedway O'Reilly Southern All Stars Victory

Lavonia, GA – Georgia wheelman Jonathan Davenport led every lap of the $5000 to win O'Reilly Southern All Star Racing Series portion of Lavonia Speedway's "Late Model Extravaganza" on Saturday night. Davenport, who drives the Beaver Motorsports Barry Wright Race Cars Monte Carlo, scored his second career OSAS win after starting from the outside of row number one. Davenport also went on to pick up the winners purse in the Fastrak Champions Series crate race later in the evening.

Thirty-five drivers signed in for Sunoco Race Fuels Pole Qualifying at the newly reconfigured 3/8ths mile northeast Georgia oval. Troutman, North Carolina's Randle Chupp grabbed the pole award with his quick lap. The driver known as the "Showstoppa" laid down a lap of 15.301 seconds - just over a tenth of a second off the track record. Davenport was second fast with his lap of 15.374 seconds. 2007 OSAS Rookie of the Year Stacy Holmes, second generation race Travis Pennington and 2007 OSAS-East Champion Casey Roberts rounded out the top five in qualifying.

With the top ten qualifiers locked in to the feature, two last chance heat races set positions eleven through twenty-two. Benji Cole and Ronnie Lee Hollingsworth scored the wins in the heats. Cole came from deep in the field to take the win while Hollingsworth took his win from the pole position. With all of the drivers who were eligible for point provisionals were already in the feature, James Roulette and Dingus Griffin were added to the field as the two fastest drivers from qualifying not in the race. Shane Clanton withdrew from the feature and Randy Nichols was added as the alternate starter.

At the drop of the green Davenport launched his machine into the lead while Chupp was left to battle with Holmes. Holmes rolled by Chupp for second as the field crossed the line to complete lap number one. Chupp suddenly found himself under fire once again as youngster Travis Pennington and Casey Roberts moved in to challenge him for third. Chupp slipped up the banking through turns three and four allowing Pennington and Roberts to slip past. Chupp struggled to pedal his machine but was unable to stop the bleeding. NASCAR Sprint Cup regular Ken Schrader bypassed Chupp one lap later. Chupp's night came to an end on lap seven when he was part of a multi-car crash.

Also involved on the crash was Hollingsworth and David Smith. Hollingsworth suffered minor injuries to his hand in the incident. All three drivers retired from the event. When the field went back to green flag racing, Davenport once again set sail and opened up a huge lead. The race was on for the runner-up position however as Pennington began to apply the pressure to Holmes. Pennington took several looks beneath Holmes before finally making the pass on the fifteenth circuit. Holmes quickly fell into the clutches of the hard charging Roberts who made his way by just one lap later.

Davenport, who had found heavy lapped traffic, seemed to be able to move around effortlessly on the choppy track surface to get by the backmarkers. But the time used in being patient allowed Pennington to chop into the lead. But just as quickly as Pennington had caught the leader, he once again began to lose touch with Davenport as he now had to deal with the lappers. Pennington was also then forced to deal with the advances of a very fast Casey Roberts. Pennington was able to fend of Roberts but the hard racing between the two had once again allowed Davenport to drive away.

The margin was then just too much as Davenport flashed across the line beneath the checkers nearly a full straightaway ahead of Pennington. Roberts held on for third while Schrader moved up to finish fourth. Dennis "Rambo" Franklin rallied to round out the top five. Davenport was very happy in victory lane. "We have been working hard on this new Barry Wright Race Car. I can't say enough about how well it performed. And our Clements motor was just flawless. It was just our night tonight. I need to thank Mark Beaver for a great car and team and I need to thank Barry Wright for all of his help."

The event was slowed by a total of six cautions. The race marked the first event under new Lavonia operator / promoter Brad York. During the off-season York and staff completely resurfaced the facility and made many improvements to the grounds. York also had a positive attitude about the facility. "Lavonia has sort of gotten a bad name because of bad dust and shows running late. We wanted to really show people that we are serious about fixing those problems. I believe we are off to a good start." said York. York also moved the OSAS feature up in the order of events when the show got behind schedule.

The second night of the AMP vs MSCCS “Battle of the States”
For Immediate Release
Wendy Bohonek (870) 208-6337
AMP Series Release
March 23, 2008

The second night of the AMP vs MSCCS “Battle of the States” pulled in 30 super late model cars from 6 different states.  The stout field included several recent champions as well as, veteran driver Jerry “Mississippi Flyer” Inmon.  The bone chilling in no way was a determent to the action packed racing that made up the 50 lap event.  Chris “The Intimagator” Wall, Holden LA, laid the quickest qualifying lap on the North Mississippi Speedway with a time of 13.483, but it would be David Breazeale, Four Corners, MS who captured the pole position after a 6 lap dash.

Announcer Ben Shelton was on hand to call the race, and got things underway by introducing each of the twenty four drivers making up the starting grid. Then with a little help from some young fans, the command “drivers start your engines was given.  Once the cars were fired up they rolled off with a four wide salute to the fans, thanking them for coming out on a cool Mississippi night to witness some good ole friendly competition between the two state late model series.

The two time MSCCS Series Champion Chris Wall jumped out to take the lead on the first lap and as he was making his way around turn two onto the back stretch when the first caution flag of the evening flew. The 2007 AMP Series Champion Jon Mitchell was scored with the caution for a flat tire, he made a quick trip to the pit, and was able to rejoin the field.  The MSCCS utilizes the Delaware double file restart, so the cars were racked and stacked and racing resumed only to see the second caution flag fly. This caution entailed several cars that got turned around between turns 3 and 4. The mayhem would end the evening for Anthony Burroughs and Jeremy Broadus, and would leave MSRA Rookie of the Year Billy Moyer Jr, Clay Fisher, and Ryan Plaisance with some degrees of body damage, but all were able to restart at the back of the field.

The racing resumed and by lap 6 “The Intimagator” was in lap traffic and started to pull a way from Ray Moore and David Breazeale who were battling for second place when the caution flag flew for the third time.  This time AMP Rookie of the Year contender Rachel York had some trouble on the front stretch, left the field on the hook, and returned to the field before the racing resumed.

The next few laps saw Chris Wall continuing his lead with SUPR Champion Ray Moore, David Breazeale, Bub McCool, and Ronald Dunn in tow rounding out the top five.  Wall was moving around on the track searching for his sweet spot with Moore close behind as the caution light came on for AMP Rookie of The Year contender Jeff Wells Jr.  Wells with heavy rear end damage was able to continue and made his way to the back of the pack and racing resumed.

The cars and stars in the field were side by side and racing hard as they made their way back around the track and started down the front stretch, when Justin McCree was pinched up against the front retaining wall and his car flipped over and slide down the last half of the front stretch on its hood before coming to a stop in turn one.  With fans on their feet, track officials at the car, and emergency vehicles dispatched, Justin made his way out of the car.  As the fans clapped, announcer Ben Shelton reminded us that McCree’s Trak-Star chassis did the job it was intended for and therefore thankfully he was not seriously hurt. Justin’s entire night was eventful, he slapped the wall hard during time trials and ended his racing night upside down. He will more than likely be sore tomorrow, but we are glad that he is okay.

Racing resumed and the caution flag would again rear its head again a few more times before the 50 laps were complete.  David Breazeale who had a great run going, stayed among the top five for the majority of the race ended his night a little early and was forced to make his way into the infield.  It was all Chris Wall who stayed clear of trouble, sliced and diced through lap traffic and was able to hold of hard charging Ray Moore and the defending MSCCS State Champion David Ashley to take home the $2500 pay day. Scott Slay and Ronald Dunn earned their respective 4th and 5th place finishes to top out your top five.
