Stormy Scott snares USMTS 'Hunt' win Sunday at Outlaw Motorsports Park
OKTAHA, Okla.-Stormy Scott saw his huge lead evaporate when the yellow flag waved with four laps to go Sunday night at the Outlaw Motorsports Park, but the 24-year-old from Las Cruces, N.M., never flinched and held on for his second win during the Hunt for the USMTS Casey's Cup.

Scott started on the pole and drove away from the field, leaving his pursuers to fight it out for second place. The race's only caution on lap 31 gave Rodney Sanders the opportunity he needed, but was never able to execute as he settled for runner-up behind Scott.

The win was his 13th of the 2014 campaign and 31st of his career. The winning paycheck was worth $3,000 to the 2012 USMTS Rookie of the Year.

Sanders held on for his third second-place finish of the weekend, and kept his title hopes high heading into five of the last six rounds of 'Hunt' races next week.

Dereck Ramirez, driving Bryan Rowland's No. 20r machine, notched a third-place finish while Johnny Bone Jr. and Jeremy Payne finished fourth and fifth, respectively. Payne, who started 16th, earned his first Mesilla Valley Transportation Hard Charger Award of the year for his efforts.

Zack VanderBeek continued his string of top-10 finishes with a sixth-place results, with 17th-starting Terry Phillips, Cade Dillard, Kelly Shryock and Joe Duvall rounding out the top 10 finishers.

Sanders expanded his lead over VanderBeek in the Hunt for the USMTS Casey's Cup to 139 points (1320 to 1181), while Stormy Scott maintained his third-place ranking with 1094 markers. The rest of the top 10 are Shryock (987), Johnny Scott (974), Ramirez (968), Duvall (916), Daniel Hilsabeck (877) and John Allen (788).

For the first time since February, a new leader emerged in the 2014 USMTS Rookie of the Year points battle. With his eighth-place finish, Dillard passed Jake Gallardo in the standings with six more races left to determine the rookie title.

Five big events are on tap for the Labor Day Weekend, beginning this Wednesday, Aug. 27, at the Marshalltown Speedway in Marshalltown, Iowa. From there, the series travels to the Hamilton County Speedway in Webster City, Iowa, on Thursday. Friday finds the mud-slinging monsters back at the Chateau Raceway in Lansing, Minn., before heading to the Deer Creek Speedway in Spring Valley, Minn., on Saturday. The pentathlon of power wraps up at the Cresco Speedway in Cresco, Iowa, on Sunday, Aug. 31.

Checkers fly for Payne at Salina Highbanks Speedway
PRYOR CREEK, Okla.-Jeremy Payne scored his first win of the Hunt for the USMTS Casey's Cup Saturday night as the United States Modified Touring Series invaded the Salina Highbanks Speedway.

Payne, who started on the outside of the front row, took command at the drop of the green flag and kept points leader Rodney Sanders at bay for the duration of the caution-free 35-lapper.

The win, worth $3,000, was the 19 career USMTS victory for the 28-year-old from Springfield, Mo.

Meanwhile, Sanders netted his second runner-up finish in as many nights to extend his points lead in his quest to join Kelly Shryock and Ryan Gustin as back-to-back USMTS national champions.

Zack VanderBeek, however, is not letting Sanders get comfortable as 'The Z-Man' kept the title fight tight with a third-place finish Saturday night-his 12th top-10 finish in his last 12 starts.

Stormy Scott came from 14th to claim the fourth spot and earned the Mesilla Valley Transportation Hard Charger Award. Terry Phillips, who started next to Scott on the 24-car grid, was fifth.

Dereck Ramirez scored a sixth-place finish driving Bryan Rowland's machine, Jason Krohn was seventh, Cade Dillard wound up eighth, Shryock nabbed ninth and John Allen rounded out the top-10.

The gear-grinding goliaths of the USMTS wrap up their weekend on Sunday, Aug. 24, at the Outlaw Motorsports Park in Oktaha, Okla., with gates swinging open at 4 p.m. and racing at 6.

Tickets are $15 at the gate, kids ages 8-12 and seniors are $7.50 and children ages 7 and under get in for free. Active duty military and veterans can also enjoy the show free of charge.
