Phillips banks $5,000 in USMTS win at Lakeside
KANSAS CITY, Kan. (Aug. 23) -- The United States Modified Touring Series invaded the Lakeside Speedway Friday night with Terry Phillips becoming the eighth different winner in 11 rounds of the Hunt for the USMTS Casey's Cup.

When the series visited the historic Kansas City clay oval back in July, Jeremy Payne dominated the feature race, and early on it looked like he would repeat the feat.

Payne shot around polesitter Corey Dripps as the race got underway and tried to run away and hide from the field. A caution on the second lap, however, kept his pursuers nearby.

Running the high side just inches from the concrete wall, Rodney Sanders blasted around the outside of Payne to lead the seventh lap and then proceeded to pull away to a huge advantage.

With Sanders cruising, Phillips was embroiled in a battle behind the leader which also featured Ryan Gustin, Payne, Johnny Scott and Stormy Scott.

A late-race caution with 11 laps to go erased the ten-car-length lead for Sanders, and Phillips took advantage on the restart to snag the spot. In the next corner, Gustin, who started 13th, followed into the runner-up spot when Sanders polished the outside wall with his rear quarter panel.

Gustin kept Phillips in sight, but was unable to challenge the 47-year-old from Springfield, Mo., and had to settle for his second second-place finish in the last three races while Phillips notched his 16th career USMTS victory and the $5,000 top prize.

Sanders held on to register a third-place finish with Stormy Scott finishing fourth and Zack VanderBeek coming home with a top-five finish.

Steve Whiteaker Jr. raced from 19 on the 26-car starting grid to sixth and earned his third Mesilla Valley Transportation Hard Charger Award of the year. Payne, Jason Hughes, Johnny Scott and 25th-starting Dereck Ramirez completed the top 10 in the final rundown.

With six races left in the Hunt for the USMTS Casey's Cup, Johnny Scott leads Sanders by a dozen markers (1047 to 1035) while Hughes is third with 983 points. The rest of the top 10 are Stormy Scott (973), Payne (928), VanderBeek (842), Kelly Shryock (812), Chris Brown (811), Ramirez (787) and Trevor Hunt (752).

On Saturday, the popular Salina Highbanks Speedway near Pryor Creek, Okla., will host another sure-to-thrill blockbuster. Gustin and Phillips picked up wins here last season while Stormy Scott walked away with the hardware most recently this past April. Hughes was the winner when the USMTS made an appearance in 2004.

The 'Salute to Veterans Night' will also feature the highly unpredictable sprint cars of the Oil Capital Racing Series as the track salutes the service veterans that have served our country with pride and honor. Dale Settle will parachute into the racetrack during pre-race ceremonies and there will also be a fly over by Paul Mackey and the Warbirds.

Gates open at 5:00 with hot laps at 6:30 and racing at 7:00. Fans can choose to view the racing from the grandstand bleachers, the upper deck beer garden, the full service "Finish Line Bar & Grill" or from one of the special VIP suites.

Tickets for adults are $20, kids ages 5-12 are $10 and children ages 4 and under are free. A Family Ticket is also available for $45. VIP seating is $35 or a seat in the beer garden is $25. Pit passes are $35 for adults and $25 for kids.

The Salina Highbanks Speedway is located 7 miles east of Pryor on SR 20. For more information, visit the website at www.salinahighbanksspeedway.com or call 918-434-7223.

For those unfortunate souls unable to see it in person, the event will be broadcast live online. You don't have to miss a single lap, visit www.RacinDirt.tv and order now.

Last-corner pass puts Shryock in Valley Speedway victory lane

GRAIN VALLEY, Mo. (Aug. 22) - Snapping a 15-month dry spell, nine-time USMTS National Champion Kelly Shryock stole the feature win from Johnny Scott Thursday night in a thriller for the ages at the Valley Speedway.

Shryock started the 40-lap main event on the outside of the front row, but it was polesitter Steve Whiteaker Jr. who got the advantage at the drop of the green flag.

While Whiteaker worked the middle and bottom lanes, Shryock pounded the cushion on the high side of the 3/8-mile clay oval with Johnny Scott, Rodney Sanders and Jeremy Payne in hot pursuit.

Shryock beat Whiteaker to the stripe to lead the third lap, but Whiteaker battled back and regained the point at the end of the fourth lap.

One lap later, Shryock bobbled in the first turn and nearly lost control of his familiar #3 Skyrocket. By the time he was back up to speed, he found himself mired back in fourth place.

Using the same high line, Scott took control from Whiteaker on lap 6. Again Whiteaker fought back and snagged the lead for laps 8-10 before Scott took over for the final time with 11 laps in the books.

Three cautions throughout the middle of the race kept the field tightly bunched while Scott continued to out-duel Whiteaker with each passing lap. Meanwhile, Payne found his way into third and began to mix it up with the leaders while Shryock slid back as far as eighth place on lap 18.

Payne pressured Scott for the top spot for the middle-to-late portion of the race, but Whiteaker was able to get back around on a restart with 12 laps to go. The race's final caution waved with six laps remaining and Shryock found himself back up to fourth for the final restart.

Shryock scooted underneath both Payne and Whiteaker in consecutive laps, and then pulled alongside Scott to challenge for the lead with three to go.

Scott held a two-car-length advantage over Shryock as they streaked below the white flag, and appeared to be on his way to his second win during the Hunt for the USMTS Casey's Cup.

Shryock made up ground down the back-stretch and dove in low in turn 3. Halfway through the turn, Scott's machine jumped over the cushion and he had to briefly lift off the gas pedal. It was enough for Shryock to inch ahead as they exited the final turn.

As they approached the finish line, Scott closed the gap and the two took the checkered flag in a dead heat. The naked eye may have missed it, but the transponders told the tale of the tape with Shryock taking the victory by two-one-thousandths of a second.

"I can't tell you how much this means," an elated Shryock said in victory lane. "People don't realize how much goes into this deal and how much work it takes to be on top of it night in and night out.

"We went back to the shop this week and tore this thing apart. We had it on the jig and found a bunch of stuff we needed to fix, and we even threw some other things at it to try and make it work. It feels good to run good."

Thursday night's triumph was the 179th of Shryock's career and earned him a $3,200 paycheck for his efforts.

Scott, who came into the event as the points leader in the Hunt for the USMTS Casey's Cup, was candid about the mistake that cost him the win, but satisfied with a good points night to keep himself atop the rankings.

"I went into turn three pretty hard and just jumped the cushion," Scott admitted. "There's no two ways about it, I just messed up and Kelly was right there to take advantage. My hats off to those guys, though. They really needed this."

Payne, who has been in the redraw for eight of the ten 'Hunt' races, drew the eighth starting spot for the sixth time but found his way onto the podium with a third-place result.

USRA Modified national points leader Terry Schultz held off Rodney Sanders for the fourth spot while Whiteaker, Chris Brown, Trevor Hunt, Terry Phillips and Tanner Mullens rounded out the top 10.

Although he started third, Phillips was involved in a caution on lap 3 and had to tag the tail of the field before clawing his way back to ninth in the end.

Similarly, Jason Hughes started 22nd on the 25-car grid and was battling for eighth on lap 27 when he was involved in a collision. He drove his way back to a 12th-place finish and earned the Mesilla Valley Transportation Hard Charger Award in the process.

In the Hunt for the USMTS Casey's Cup, Scott holds a 32-point advantage over Sanders (973 to 941) going into Round 11 of 18 on Friday night. Hughes remains third and Stormy Scott, who was the first driver out of the feature, is fourth. Payne is fifth, followed by Zack VanderBeek, Brown, Shryock, Dereck Ramirez and Hunt.

On Friday the series returns to the Lakeside Speedway for another barn-burner at the historic half-mile oval on the edge of the Missouri River. Gates will open at 4:00, hot laps start at 7:00 and the night's first heat race gets the green flag at 7:30.

The Iron Man Challenge featuring USRA B-Mods will also be in action along with local Factory Stocks. Adults are $17, juniors ages 13-16 are $10, kids ages 6-12 are $5 and children ages 5 and under get in for free. Pit passes are $35.

Lucas Schott and his AMP Energy ride will be on hand for a meet 'n' greet from 11:30-1:30 Friday at the Casey's General Store located at 13000 State Ave. in Kansas City. At the same time, Trevor Hunt and his Snickers car will be at the Casey's located at 112 Branch in Platte City, Mo.

The Lakeside Speedway is a 3/8-mile slightly-banked dirt oval located 1.0 mile west of I-435 (exit 18) on SR 5 (northwest of Kansas City, Kan.). The track hotline is 913-299-2040 or check out the track's website at www.lakesidespeedway.net.

This week's three-night swing wraps up at the Salina High Banks Speedway in Pryor Creek, Okla., on Saturday.

For those unfortunate souls unable to see it all in person, all three of this week's events will be broadcast live via pay-per-view produced by RacinDirt. You don't have to miss a single lap, visit www.RacinDirt.tv and subscribe today.
