Payne rebounds, wins Lucas Slick Mist Shoot-Out

WHEATLAND, Mo. (Aug. 10) - Twenty-four hours ago, Jeremy Payne was hoping to make a last-lap pass for the lead but instead saw his hopes of a USMTS victory vanish when a skirmish with the leader ended his effort one lap short.

On Saturday night, Payne's pass for the lead came on the first lap and this time he had nothing but lapped traffic in front of him en route to a victory in the 5th Annual Lucas Slick Mist Shoot-Out at the Lucas Oil Speedway.

Polesitter John Allen paced the first circuit before Payne surged ahead in the next turn. From there, the 27-year-old from nearby Springfield, Mo., set his cruise control for victory lane and led the final 39 laps for a $5,000 payday.

Despite Payne's dominating performance at the front of the field, the 3/8-mile clay oval produced nail-biting two- and three-wide action through the 28-car main event field that saw all but two of the starters finish the caution-free race.

Allen drifted back to third on the third lap when Austin Siebert got by, but fought back to regain the position on lap 12. He stayed there to the end to score his best USMTS finish since winning at the Belleville High Banks five years ago.

Johnny Scott made a late charge to garner the third spot with Chris Brown netting a fourth-place finish. Siebert held on for fifth while Zack VanderBeek, Joey Galloway, Stormy Scott, Rodney Sanders and Jon Sheets rounded out the top 10.

In the Hunt for the USMTS Casey's Cup, Johnny Scott now holds a one-point advantage over twin brother Stormy Scott after three rounds in the chase for the $15,000-to-win USMTS National Championship.

Sanders, who started the 'Hunt' outside the top 10, is now third, followed by Jason Hughes, Kelly Shryock, Brown, Payne, VanderBeek, Galloway and rookie points leader Trevor Hunt.

On Sunday, the tireless USMTS touring titans trek to the I-80 Speedway in Greenwood, Neb., where just last month they joined the Lucas Oil Late Models for an historic Silver Dollar Nationals that saw Rodney Sanders sweep both nights of action.

Terry Phillips, Jason Hughes, Jeremy Payne and Kelly Shryock have also tasted victory at the 4/10-mile high-banked clay oval in the two previous Silver Dollar Nationals. Back in 2005, Tommy Myer garnered an emotional win in the USMTS debut here, just ten days after suffering a bruised pelvis in a multi-car crash at the Deer Creek Speedway.

Also racing Sunday will be B-Mods, Hobby Stocks and Hornets. Pit gates open at 3 p.m., grandstands open at 4:30 and racing kicks off at 5:55. Grandstand admission is $17 for adults and $5 for juniors ages 6-12 with children 5 and under admitted free. Pit passes will be $35.

Coupons worth $2 off adult admission will be available Sunday at Casey's General Store locations in Ashland, Eagle, La Vista, Lincoln and Waverly. Trevor Hunt and his Snickers-sponsored modified will be present for a meet 'n' greet at the Casey's location 108 S. 14th St. in Ashland from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

The I-80 Speedway is located one block north of Interstate 80 at exit 420, halfway between Lincoln and Omaha. For more information, visit www.i-80speedway.com or call 402-342-3453.

Stormy Scott third at the white flag, first to the checkered in controversial classic at I-35 Speedway

WINSTON, Mo. (Aug. 8) - Stormy Scott was in the right place at the right time to take down the feature win Thursday night as the United States Modified Touring Series blasted into the I-35 Speedway for the second race in the Hunt for the USMTS Casey's Cup.

Riding third at the white flag, Scott entered the first turn tucked in closely behind Jeremy Payne and race-long leader Jason Hughes when the 2010 USMTS National Champion spun on the final lap.

As per USMTS rules, the car that brings about the caution flag and any others which make contact or cause the incident must restart at the tail of the field. Officials determined that contact from Payne initiated Hughes' spin, so both drivers had to start at the back of the pack for the green-white-checkered finish.

Scott was able to withstand pressure from Rodney Sanders over the final two orbits to score the victory and pocket $5,000 for his effort. Polesitter Chris Brown finished a close third, with Lucas Schott passing a dozen drivers en route to a fourth-place finish and the Mesilla Valley Transportation Hard Charger Award.

Nine-time USMTS National Champion Kelly Shryock came from 11th on the starting grid to take fifth. Johnny Scott, Austin Siebert, Daniel Hilsabeck, Dereck Ramirez and Trevor Hunt rounded out the top 10.

Hughes came back for an 11th-place finish. Payne headed to the pits before the final restart.

The win was Stormy Scott's 17 of his career, breaking a tie with Payne and tying him with Sanders on the USMTS all-time wins list. His victory also propelled him to the top of the points standings where he now holds a 14-point advantage over his twin brother, Johnny.

Shryock moved up to third in the rankings while Hughes fell to fourth. Sanders is fifth, followed by Zack VanderBeek, Brown, Hunt, Payne and Schott in the top 10.

Friday will take the Best of the Best back to the Humboldt Speedway in Humboldt, Kan., for the 35th time at the Whitworth family's 3/8-mile clay oval. Hughes comes in with 10 wins in the 34 previous feature races, but Stormy Scott has been the hottest of late with four wins in his last six starts here.

Shryock is a six-time winner at Humboldt while two-time defending USMTS National Champion Ryan Gustin has three wins, including the King of America III Modified Nationals back in March.

Johnny Bone Jr. won the first USMTS race at 'The Hummer' on June 28, 2000. He and Johnny Scott are both two-time main event winners while Tim Donlinger, Jason Krohn, Jon Tesch, Steve Holzkamper, Sanders, William Gould, Terry Phillips and Payne each have one checkered flag to their credit.

Gates open at 5 p.m., hot laps begin at 7:30 and racing starts at 8 p.m. Also on the racing card will be B-Mods, Factory Stocks and Pure Stocks. Adults are $17, Juniors 13-16 are $10, kids 6-12 are $5 and children ages 5 and under get in for free. Pit passes are $35.

Fans can get coupons good for $2 off adult admission at Casey's General Stores locations in Chanute, Iola and Yates Center. Trevor Hunt and his Snickers-sponsored modified will be present for a meet 'n' greet at the Casey's location at 712 E. Madison Ave. in Iola from 12-2 p.m. Lucas Schott and his AMP Energy-sponsored modified will be at the Casey's located at 220 W. Cherry in Chanute from 12-2 p.m.

The Humboldt Speedway is located 0.1 mile west of US 169 at the Humboldt exit, then 0.5 mile south, then 0.9 mile east. For more information call 620-431-2470 or visit them online at www.humboldtspeedway.com. You can also like Humboldt Speedway on Facebook at www.facebook.com/humboldtspeedway.

On Saturday night the Hunt for the USMTS Casey's Cup will storm into the Lucas Oil Speedway for the 5th Annual Lucas Slick Mist Shoot-Out. The four-day swing will wrap up on Sunday at the I-80 Speedway in Greenwood, Neb.
