WEBSTER CITY, Iowa (July 17) -- Johnny Scott took command early and remained in control to the finish Wednesday night as he captured the Ameriprise Financial "Clash of the Titans" main event for the USMTS Casey's Cup Series at the Hamilton County Speedway in front a standing-room-only crowd.
Polesitter Ryan Ruter led the first two laps but Scott quickly powered around the outside in turn 4 to lead the third circuit. Two caution flags during the course of the race kept the track clear in front of Scott, and he was flawless on each restart to maintain his advantage from beginning to end.
It was the eighth win of the 2013 season for the 23-year-old from Las Cruces, N.M., and with lap money and other bonuses the $7,350 paycheck was the richest of his 20 career USMTS victories.
Rodney Sanders finished second and Dereck Ramirez was third. 2007 USMTS national champion Jason Krohn and two-time defending USMTS national champion Ryan Gustin came from the 11th and 12th starting spots to finish fourth and fifth, respectively.
Jason Hughes, rookie points leader Trevor Hunt, Daniel Hilsabeck, nine-time USMTS national champion Kelly Shryock and Zack VanderBeek completed the top 10.
Wednesday's event also wrapped up action in the Farm Boy BBQ Sauce Northern Region presented by Day Motor Sports. Despite finishing last in the feature, Stormy Scott held on to win the regional points title and the $5,000 payday that accompanies it.
Joey Jensen, VanderBeek, Ramirez, Johnny Scott, Lucas Schott, Hughes, Shryock, Hunt and Corey Dripps rounded out the top 10 in the final standings and assured themselves a spot in the Hunt for the USMTS Casey's Cup. Also locking themselves into 'The Hunt' were Ron Jones, Daniel Hilsabeck, Pat Graham, Joey Galloway and Masen Big Eagle-all of whom had perfect attendance in the region.
Also on the card Wednesday night was the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series with Jason Feger taking the win and $10,000 top prize. The series will join the USMTS again this Friday and Saturday, July 19-20, at the I-80 Speedway in Greenwood, Neb., for the 3rd Annual Silver Dollar Nationals.
Terry Phillips picked up the checkers in the USMTS Modified main event last year at I-80 while his former teammate, Jeremy Payne, captured the inaugural event win two seasons ago. The USMTS main events will pay up to $2,000 to win Friday and $3,000 on Saturday, with an additional $2,000 each night if the winner participates in the Big Dog Buy-In.
