Stormy Scott smothers competition in USMTS debut at Devil’s Bowl Speedway

MESQUITE, Texas (June 25) – Despite temperatures hovering near 100 degrees on a Tuesday afternoon in Mesquite, Texas, nothing was going to come between thousands of hungry race fans from packing the Devil’s Bowl Speedway to witness the debut of the United States Modified Touring Series at Lanny Edwards’ historic half-mile dirt oval.

Heat race action was a wild ride where experience on the high-banked speedplant proved fruitful for the track’s regular competitors and those who have experienced the unique configuration that the track offers.

But once the green flag waved to start the 25-lap, 26-car main event, nothing was going to come between Stormy Scott and a $4,000 paycheck.

After holding off a late charge from Josh Landers to win his heat race, Scott found himself on the pole after the redraw among the top 8 drivers in passing points

And despite four cautions during the first six laps of the race that kept the field bunched up, the 23-year-old from Las Cruces, N.M., was flawless on each restart and was never seriously challenged throughout the race.

“It was really tough to get into turn one,” Scott admitted. “I really hard to get on the brakes hard going in, so I was just waiting for somebody to slam into the back of me but luckily it never happened.”

It was the sixth win of the season for last year’s USMTS Rookie of the Year, and 14th overall in a career that spans less than two years.

“I need to thank my crew and all the sponsors on this racecar—I couldn’t do any of this without them—and I need to thank Bryan (Rowland, car owner) because I definitely couldn't do it without him,” Scott exclaimed in victory lane. “And I'm thankful for this lucky streak I'm on. I guess I should thank God or something.”

Four cautions in the first six laps kept the field bunched tight in the early stages of the race. Polesitter Jimmy Ray went wheel to wheel with Scott when the race started, but Scott got the advantage in the second corner and began to expand his lead.

After that, Scott jumped out to a big lead on each restart while Ray and Chris Brown raced side by side for the second spot with driver throughout the field running high and low, often racing four cars wide.

The younger of the twin brothers, Johnny Scott, moved from his ninth row starting spot to third in just nine laps and challenged Brown for second place midway through the contest.

The race’s fifth and final caution with 10 laps to go saw Stormy Scott’s huge lead evaporate and gave some hope to the drivers chasing him. The restart saw Brown, Johnny Scott and Jason Hughes right behind while Clyde Dunn Jr. inherited fifth when fifth-running Chase Allen headed for the pit area under caution.

Undaunted, Stormy Scott pulled away from the field once again and won going away as he left the rest of his pursuers to slug it out for the runner-up paycheck.

Brown withstood a late-race charge from Hughes to hold on to the second spot while Johnny Scott slipped to a fourth-place finish ahead of Dunn and Colby Smith, who led all 46 drivers in the evening’s heat race passing points.

Dereck Ramirez came from 21st to finish sixth, Rodney Sanders turned around a dismal qualifying effort and used a provisional to start 26th before rallying for an eighth-place finish.

After being unable to start his heat race, Steve Whiteaker Jr. came from last in the second Real Racing Wheels “B” Main to take the sixth and final transfer spot, and then roared from 24th on the grid to nab ninth in the main event and pick up his second Mesilla Valley Hard Charger Award of the season.

Ray wound up in the tenth spot.

The 4s Motorsports Southern Speedweek powered by Lecolift continues on Wednesday, June 26, as the USMTS Modifieds invade the Heart O’ Texas Speedway in Elm Mott, Texas (near Waco) for the third straight year.

The Heart O’ Texas Speedway is a semi-banked 1/3-mile clay oval located off of I-35 at exit 343 (FM 308), then 0.6 mile north on east frontage road. For more information call 254-829-2294 or check out www.heartotexspeedway.com online.

From there, it’s back to the north for three nights to finish up the swing on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, June 27-29, with repeat visits to the Kennedale (Texas) Speedway Park, RPM Speedway in Crandall, Texas, and Southern Oklahoma Speedway in Ardmore, Okla.
