Johnny Scott returns to victory lane in USMTS shootout at Longdale

LONGDALE, Okla. (June 11) -- The second night of the Rancho Milagro Showdown/Alyssa Ramirez Memorial at the Longdale Speedway ended with a barnburner for the ages and Johnny Scott's first win of the 2016 USMTS campaign.

But it was his older twin, Stormy Scott, who swiped the lead from polesitter Jason Hughes when the green flag appeared for the start of the 42-lap main event while Johnny Scott, took off from ninth on the grid.

Hughes chased Stormy Scott around the 3/8-mile oval for the first seven laps with Chad Wheeler, Ryan Gustin and Jeremy Payne close behind.

Gustin, who won 24 hours earlier on the same race track, got around Wheeler on lap 8 and then squirted by Hughes and Stormy Scott to lead the 15th circuit.

For the second straight night, Stormy Scott watched 'The Reaper' take control after leading the first 15 laps, but this time he was unable to retain the runner-up position as his engine expired two laps later to end his night and a chance at a second win on the Longdale dirt.

Meanwhile, Johnny Scott found himself running third on the back bumper of Hughes during a flurry of three cautions over the next four laps.

With 20 laps in the books, Johnny Scott snuck past Hughes for second and inched ahead of Gustin to lead the 25th lap.

Gustin fought back and regained the top spot for the next two times around before the younger Scott brother was back in front on lap 28.

With 10 laps remaining, Gustin was able to inch ahead to lead one more time, but Johnny Scott regained his rhythm the next lap and never gave the position back again.

The win was worth $3,000 to the 26-year-old from Las Cruces, N.M.

It was the 28th victory of his USMTS career and came on the 28th start since his most recent trip to Widow Wax Victory Lane last August during the Hunt for the USMTS Casey's Cup powered by S&S Fishing & Rental.

Payne got around Gustin late and wrestled away the runner-up honors and Zack VanderBeek came from the 12th starting spot to finish fourth behind Gustin.

Cade Dillard was fifth while Dereck Ramirez, Hughes, Jesse Sobbing, Johnny Bone Jr. and Philip Houston, who started 19th, rounded out the top 10 and earned the KSE Racing Products Hard Charger Award.

The MSD Central Region points reveal a tight battle at the top with Hughes leading Sobbing by 16 points (777 to 761) and Dillard just another 26 markers back with 735. Ramirez (712), Daniel Hilsabeck (611), Mike Jergens (593), Gustin (564), Joe Duvall (549), Johnny Scott (529) and Rodney Sanders (517) complete the top 10.

The series is back at it again in the RealTruck.com Northern Region with a five-race swing at four race tracks beginning Tuesday, June 14, at the Iowa State Fair Speedway in Des Moines.

From there, action moves north to the Dodge County Speedway in Kasson, Minn., on Wednesday before heading to the KRA Speedway in Willmar, Minn., on Thursday.

The week wraps up with the 18th Annual Masters on Friday and Saturday, June 17-18, at the Cedar Lake Speedway in New Richmond, Wis.

All roads lead to the highly-anticipated inaugural Widow Wax Summersota Nationals, June 22-25, at the I-94 Raceway in Fergus Falls, Minn., where a $15,000 payday awaits the winner.
