USMTS checkers at I-94 Speedway wave for Hughes

FERGUS FALLS, Minn. (May 13) -- Jason Hughes made it two in a row and six for the season Friday night when the United States Modified Touring Series invaded the I-94 Speedway.

With two events in the RealTruck.com Northern Region in the books, the defending USMTS national champion has both $3,000 winner's checks in his bank account, along with the points lead in all three regions.

Early on Friday, USMTS rookie Jacob Bleess took off from the pole position and raced out to lead the first 16 laps before Hughes ran him down and took control with 17 circuits complete.

Hughes cruised to the checkered flags from there with another Grant Junghans Rookie of the Year Award contender, Ricky Thornton Jr., closing in fast at the end but settling his series-best runner-up paycheck.

Last year's top rookie, Jesse Sobbing, continued his strong start to the 2016 USMTS Casey's Cup campaign with a third-place finish while Bleess held on for fourth ahead of Johnny Scott.

Dan Ebert, Cade Dillard, Brady Gerdes, Stormy Scott and Scott Bintz rounded out the top 10 finishers in the "A" Main which started 26 of the evening's 50 entrants.

The event originally scheduled for tomorrow (Saturday) at the Viking Speedway in Alexandria, Minn., has been canceled due to excessive rain and cold in the area.

The series now heads back toward the equator for a four-night, four-track excursion into Kansas and Oklahoma:

Thursday, May 19 ... 81 Speedway, Park City, Kan.
Friday, May 20 ... Outlaw Motor Speedway, Oktaha, Okla.
Saturday, May 21 ... Salina Highbanks Speedway, Pryor Creek, Okla.
Sunday, May 22 ... Longdale Speedway, Longdale, Okla.

All four events will pay $3,000 to win and award valuable points in the hotly-contested MSD Central Region presented by Day Motor Sports.
