Bold driving trumps bad draws as Johnny Scott conquers Kennedale

KENNEDALE, Texas (April 26) – Johnny Scott picked up the win Friday night as the USMTS Modifieds invaded the Kennedale Speedway Park for the first time in the 15-year history of America’s Premier Modified Tour.

As bad he was at picking numbers out of a hat, he was equally good at picking up positions on the track.

Starting eighth in his heat race, the 23-year-old from Las Cruces, N.M., roared to a third-place finish in a matter of eight laps which earned him a spot in the redraw among the top 8 drivers in passing points.

The worst of them all in the draw, Scott started eighth in the 26-car field but he spent little time there.

Polesitter Steve Whiteaker Jr. grabbed the lead at the start of the 40-lap main event and proceeded to pace the field through the first half of the race on a wet and bumpy surface.

Clyde Dunn Jr., who started next to Whiteaker on the front row, shadowed Whiteaker the whole way and finally snuck by for the lead on lap 22. One lap later, Whiteaker was in the pits after falling victim to a broken cam in his powerplant.

Dunn’s reign was short-lived, however, as Scott blasted by on the inside two laps later and then proceeded to sail away to his second victory of the season.

“Me and Clyde had a really good battle there,” Scott said in victory lane. “My car was just a little bit better than his so I was just waiting for him to mess up then I was gonna go.”

The win was Scott’s 15th of his USMTS career since getting his first one three years ago at the Lonestar Speedway in Kilgore, Texas.

Rodney Sanders secured his spot at the top of the point standings in the Allgayer, Inc. Southern Region presented by Day Motor Sports with a runner-up finish while Fito Gallardo crossed the finish line third.

Following post-race technical inspections, however, Gallardo was disqualified for unapproved heads which moved 20th-starting J.P. Dowell up to the third position.

Dunn held on for fourth with 2010 USMTS national champion Jason Hughes coming from 17th to round out the top 5 finishers.

Sixth through tenth were Tristan Dycus, nine-time USMTS national champion Kelly Shryock, Thursday night’s winner, Chris Brown, Cody Smith and Chris Huckeba.

On Saturday, the USMTS Modifieds return to the Southern Oklahoma Speedway in Ardmore, Okla.—a USRA Weekly Racing Series track which features USRA Modifieds. Rodney Sanders won the most recent event at the track last June. In the four previous USMTS events here, Ryan Gustin and Jason Hughes each have two wins to their credit.

Gates open at 5 p.m., hot laps begin at 7 and the first green flag waves at 7:30. Limited Mods and Stock Cars will round out the racing program.

The Southern Oklahoma Speedway is a semi-banked 3/8-mile clay oval located 0.7 mile east of I-35 (exit 29) on US 70, then 1.8 miles south on US 77. For more information call 405-627-1766 or click www.southernoklahomaspeedway.com to visit the track's official website.
