Ben Reed claims second K&N Filters USCS MOD title

Atlanta, GA – November 29, 2012 - Ben Reed from Munford, Tennessee claimed his second K&N Filters USCS Modified Touring Series Championship in 2012. Reed used a visit to the www.rockauto.com USCS victory lane with a win at Clayhill Motorsports on Memorial Day plus a total of six top five and ten top ten finishes in fiteen races to propel his team to the top of the standings with 2236 points in the highly competitive USCS series for Outlaw style open wheel modified race cars. Reed’s other share of the K&N Filters USCS Modified Touring Series Championship came in the series inaugural 2006 season.

Joseph Leister from Drummonds, Tennessee who was the 2009 USCS Modified “Driver of the Year” after finishing in second place in both the 2009 K&N Filters USCS Modified Touring Series and the 2009 USCS Modified Weekly Racing Series standings finished the 2012K&N Filters USCS Modified Touring division standings in the runner-up spot with 1881 points. Leister’s steady performances and attendance at all USCS Modified events until he missed one night with an engine failure late in the season kept him from making the title chase a lot closer.

Although not being able to reach the www.RockAuto.com USCS victory lane during his 2012 season, like he did twice in 2011, Lucas Lee from Paris, Tennessee used nine top five finishes to collect enough points to beat out his Father and team-mate Michael Lee also from Paris, Tennessee for the third position in the final 2012 standings with 1593 points. Michael Lee used nine top ten and five times in the top five to finish fourth in the point standings with 1524points, just behind his Son. The 2011 and defending USCS Modified Touring Series Champion, Murray Vaughn from Hernando, Mississippi rounded out the top five drivers with 1288 points.

Brandon Poppenheimer from Nesbit, Mississippi who usually runs enough USCS Modified events to find a place in the top ten of the final standings, led the next group of drivers in sixth place with 1217 points. Ditto for the “Atwood Outlaw” T.J, Herndon from Atwood, Tennessee who had one feature win on the season at Columbus Speedway on June 1st and collected 1139 points to finish in seventh place. Herndon shared the 2006 title with Reed as Co-Champions when the two ended the first season in a tie in the point standings. Jimmy Cornell from Brosley, Missouri finished in eighth place after the final tally of the points with 1015 points. Chris Moore from Nesbit, Mississippi ran an abbreviated 2012 schedule and finished with 762 series points for ninth place in the standings. Young gun Tyler Fowler from Portageville, Missouri ran a partial USCS Modified schedule but earned the most points of any driver eligible for the Rookie of the Year and will receive that honor at the series 2012 Championship Awards banquet via his tenth place finish in the 2012 point standings with 746 points.

One hundred and forty-eight different drivers competed during the 2012 K&N Filters USCS Modified Touring Series fifteen events. The series averaged 24 cars per event in 2012.
