Morgan Turpen captures USCS/URC North South Shootout at Cherokee Speedway

GAFFNEY, S.C. - October 4, 2014 - Morgan Turpen was not going to be denied during Saturday night’s United Sprint Car Series presented by K&N Filters and the URC Rislone Sprint Series North/South Shootout at Cherokee Speedway. Turpen, from Cordova, Tennessee, took the lead from 2012 URC champion Robbie Stillwaggon for the final time on lap 20 of the 30-lap North/South Shootout finale A-main Saturday and weathered four late-race cautions and subsequent restarts to bolt away to the biggest victory of her career in a race that was ultimately a war of attrition at Cherokee. The win was Turpen’s sixth career USCS feature triumph and her second of the season, as well as her first-career URC victory.

“Wow,” a shocked Turpen said with a smile in www.rockauto.com USCS Victory Lane. “I didn’t expect to be standing here tonight. As the race wore on, we just kept getting better while the #89 (Robbie Stillwaggon) kept getting worse. We needed this bad, the team did, and I did too. I’m so proud and so thankful for this effort tonight.”

Turpen and Stillwaggon exchanged the lead five times between each other, at lap one (Turpen), two (Stillwaggon), seventeen (Turpen), nineteen (Stillwaggon) and twenty (Turpen). The race was slowed by cautions a total of six times; at lap 8 when the defending event champion Eric Riggins Jr. caught fire coming off of turn four, at lap 9 when Bill Moore flipped going into turn two, at lap 20 when Brian Smith spun in turn 2, at lap 22 for a melee in turn four involving Jonathan Swanson, Brandon McLain and Terry Witherspoon, at lap 25 when Swanson slowed down the backstretch and at lap 26 when both Stillwaggon and Brian Thomas slowed to a stop on the frontstretch.

Behind Turpen, K&N Filters Pole Position starerer Lance Moss, from Cherryville, North Carolina rallied late to post a second-place result and Wontage, New Jersey driver Davie “No Panic” Franek completed the podium in third, officially clinching the 2014 URC championship in the process. Mertztown, Pennsylvania’s Josh Weller finished behind Franek in fourth and ten-time USCS National champion Terry Gray, from Bartlett, Tennessee, who started eleventh, rounded out the top five.

Boyertown, Pennsylvania’s Randy West led the next group of drivers home in sixth place and 15-year-old Nick Snyder, from Marco Island, Florida finished seventh. Yardville, New Jersey pilot Jonathan Swanson was eighth and Pendergrass, Georgia’s Brian Thomas was scored ninth. Robbie Stillwaggon, from Burlington, New Jersey completed the top ten at the finish.

Brandon McLain kicked off the evening’s racing action by winning his career-first Hoosier Tire Speed Dash, and Morgan Turpen scored the win in the Engler Machine and Tool First Heat. Robbie Stillwaggon rolled to the victory in the Butlerbuilt Second Heat.

Lance Moss was the provisional pole-sitter after scoring the most passing points in heat race action, and after a zero came up in the K&N Inversion Draw, he also received the K&N Filters Pole Award.  Brian Thomas passed the most cars in the A-main (seven) to grab the Wilwood Disc Brakes Hard Charger Award.

The United Sprint Car Series presented by K&N Filters continues their 2014 schedule on Saturday, October 11 during  Cotton Boll Cup at Poplar Bluff Speedway in Poplar Bluff, Missouri. That event will also see the K&N Filters USCS Outlaw Modifieds in action on October 10th and 11th.

Jim Young charges to www.rockauto.com USCS 600 sprint win at Cherokee
GAFFNEY, S.C. - October 4, 2014 - Saturday night at Cherokee Speedway, Jim Young ensured there was no doubt who the strongest car in the www.rockauto.com USCS 600 Sprint Series field was.
Young, from Johnstown, Pennsylvania, surged from fourth to the lead on the opening lap of the 600 mini-sprint 15-lap main event and held on through two mid-race cautions to grab his first USCS-sanctioned mini-sprint victory of the 2014 season.

The victory was Young’s third career USCS 600 Sprint Series win. “The car was really rolling through the corners well; I could go to the bottom and pretty much stick down there. I saw the 14 car (McCullough) was up on top at the start, so I just went where they weren’t and it paid off,” Young said in www.rockauto.com USCS Victory Lane.

K&N Filters pole-starter Matt McCullough, from Atlanta, Georgia, chased Young all the way but had nothing for the Pennsylvania hot-shoe in the closing laps and had to settle for second, with Cherryville, North Carolina’s Johnny Bridges collecting the K&N Filters Podium Award in third place, his best career USCS 600 feature finish. Coby Adams, out of Mooresville, North Carolina jumped from tenth to finish fourth and Clarksville, Tennessee college student and defending USCS 600 Sprint Series champion Sean Hosey rounded out the top five.

Winder, Georgia veteran Mike Magic finished sixth and in the process, claimed the 2014 USCS 600 Southern Lightning regional series championship by seven points over Montgomery, Alabama’s Kyle Amerson, who was scored eighth at the checkered flag.
September 19th Senoia Raceway winner Dirk Miller from Sanford, Florida finished in seventh place followed by Amerson in eighth and 2013 www.rockauto.com USCS 600 Southern region Champion Bob Trapino from Alpharetta, Georgia in ninth place. David Hall from Casselberry, Florida rounded out the top ten drivers.

The main event was only slowed by a pair of cautions on lap 10, the first for debris and the second on the ensuing restart when Shreve, Ohio young gun Trevor Baker smacked the outside wall in turn one.
2013 series Champion Sean Hosey kicked off the night by grabbing the win in the Hoosier Tire Speed Dash on a last lap, last turn pass, and Johnny Bridges took the win in the Engler Machine and Tool First Heat. Jim Young notched the win in the www.rockauto.com Second Heat.

Young was the provisional pole-sitter after scoring the most passing points in heat race action, but when a four was pulled during the K&N Inversion Draw, Matt McCullough was awarded the K&N Filters Pole Position.  Coby Adams passed the most cars in the main event (six) to garner the Wilwood Disc Brakes Hard Charger Award.

The www.rockauto.com  USCS 600 Sprint Car Series fires back into action in four weeks with the USCS Fall Nationals at Riverside International Speedway in West Memphis, Arkansas on October 31st and November 1st.  For rules and updated schedule information about the www.rockauto.com USCS 600 Sprint Car series please visit www.uscsracing.com or call the series office at 770-460-7223 or 770-865-6097.
