TURPEN HOLDS OFF MOORE FOR 4TH USCS WIN OF 2016 AT SENOIA, GA

SENOIA, GA - August,20, 2016 - The defending United Sprint Car Series Outlaw Thunder Tour Presented by K&N Filters National Champion Morgan Turpen of Cordova, TN picked up her fourth win of the season on Saturday night in the 7th Annual Senoia Summernationals at Senoia Raceway.  The “Queen of the Wings” held off a hard late-race charge from young gun Howard Moore of Memphis, TN.

Turpen took the lead after a lap 13 crash took out early race leader Eric Riggins Jr. of Charlotte, NC.  Despite a rain delay, the “Carolina Kid” could not make repairs to continue in the race.

After the restart, Moore moved up to challenge Turpen for the point, and actually took the lead on lap 23, but the caution flag came out after the K&N Filters Pole Award recipient Johnny Gilbertson Jr. of Dover, FL  stalled on the front straightaway to negate the pass.  Turpen led Moore down for the restart, and was able to hold him off for the win.

Moore had to settle for second. The K&N Filters Podium Award third place position went to Lance Moss of Cherryville, NC.  The 11-time USCS National Champion Terry Gray of Bartlett, TN finished fourth, and 2013 USCS Rookie of the Year, Curt Terrell of Bartlett, TN was fifth.  The 2015 USCS Rookie of the Year, Nick Snyder of Marco Island, FL started 16th and finished sixth to earn the Wilwood Disc Brakes Hard Charger Award.

14-year-old USCS Rookie of the Year points leader, Danny Sams III of Englewood, FL finished seventh and Brian Thomas of Pendergrass, GA took the eighth spot.  Te 2014 USCS Rookie of the Year, Brandon McClain of Indian Trail, NC was ninth and the ageless wonder 78-year-old Ray Bugg of Iuka, MS rounded out the top ten.

In preliminary action, the eight-lap Engler Machine and Tool first heat was won by oward Moore, the eight-lap Brown and Miller Racing Solutions second heat was claimed by Gray and Lance Moss won the Schoenfeld Headers eight-lap third heat race.

The caution flag came out early in the 25-lap main event, as Shawn Murray of Jacksonville, FL spun in turn one on lap one to necessitate a complete restart.  On the next try, Gilbertson led Turpen, Riggins, Moore, and Moss.  Gray got by Moss to take over the fifth spot on lap two, and then got around Moore on lap three for the fourth position.

Turpen took the lead from Gilbertson on lap six with an outside move while Riggins and Moss dropped Gilbertson back to fourth on lap seven to stay with the leader.  The caution came out on lap nine for debris in turn three.  Turpen led Riggins, Gray, Moore, Moss, Gilbertson, Sams, Snyder, Darren Orth of Jacksonville, FL, and Bugg down for the restart.

When the green flag came out, Riggins got a run on Turpen and took the lead coming off the second turn.  Moore and Moss took over third and fourth respectively on the restart, as Gray dropped back to fifth.  Riggins was lapped traffic on lap 13 when he jumped the cushion on the high side of the race track and hit the fourth turn wall doing heavy damage to his race car.

Rain over Senoia Raceway forced a 40 minute delay during the caution period, but the cars were pushed off to continue the final 12 tours of the 25-lap main event with Turpen back in the lead followed by Moore, Moss, Gray, Gilbertson, Sams, Snyder, Thomas, Orth, and Bugg in the top ten.

The 2012 USCS Rookie of the Year, Jeff Willingham stalled on lap 15 to light up the yellow bulb and during the caution period, Orth gave up a top ten spot after going to the pits with a cut tire.  Turpin continued to lead after the restart, but Jake McLain of Indian Trail, NC stalled in turn one to bring out the caution flag on lap 16.  Turpen was the leader for the restart with Moore, Moss, Gray and Terrell in tow.

After the next restart, Turpen had company at the front of the pack, as Moore moved up to challenge for the lead.  The top two drivers bobbed and weaved their way through lapped traffic bringing the crowd to their feet.  Moore passed Turpen for the lead on lap 23, but it was for naught, as the yellow flag came out for Gilbertson, who stalled in turn one.

Turpen led Moore, Moss, Gray and Terrell down for the restart and a two lap dash to the finish.  Moore tried both inside and outside to challenge for the lead, but with clear race track in front of her, the 23-year-old school teacher hit her marks, stayed out front, and picked up the win in her quest for a second-straight USCS National Championship.

The next three events for the 20th Anniversary USCS Outlaw Thunder Tour Presented by K&N Filters will take place during a busy Labor Day Holiday Weekend.  The first race will be at Lavonia Speedway in Lavonia, GA on Friday night, September 2.  Race two will be at Laurens Speedway in Laurens, SC on Saturday night, September 3.  The weekend finale will be on Monday night, September 5 at Tri-County Race Track in Brasstown, NC.

In United Speed Contest Sanction RockAuto.com 600 Mini Sprint action, Robby Hoffman of Tampa, FL won the 20-lap feature race.  Hoffman took the lead on lap nine after early race leader Brandon Taylor of Cumming, GA had a mechanical failure.
