FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: USCS presented by K&N Filters Awards Banquet honors National Champ Terry Gray and top drivers Atlanta, GA - January 29, 2015 – Just fewer than one hundred attendees watched as the “Bartlett Bullet” Terry Gray from Bartlett, Tennessee was honored for his eleventh United Sprint Car Series presented by K&N Filters National Championship this past Saturday at the 18th annual and the 2014 USCS Champions Awards Banquet in Roswell, Georgia. The veteran sprint car driver made two visits to the www.rockauto.com USCS victory lane as the series feature winner at 411 Motor Speedway on May 2nd and at Lavonia Speedway on July 17th. Gray didn’t lead the season in the win column, but, had over 30 finishes in the top five during the series 35 dirt and paved oval events. Gray also collected the Championship trophy and check for both the USCS Mid South Thunder regional and Southern Thunder regional series point’s battles. Gray’s team-mate and the 2010 USCS Rookie of the Year, Morgan Turpen from Cordova, Tennessee, was the only female sprint car competitor near the top of the USCS standings. Turpen had a stellar season with a Championship in the USCS “Road to Atlanta” Hoosier Asphalt Series with a win at Southern National Motorsports Park on April 26th and four top five finishes in the five-event pavement mini-series. Turpen, who grabbed her career fifth and sixth USCS career feature wins during the 2014 season additionally collected runner-up honors in the National title chase as well as the USCS Mid South and Southern regional series. She was also honored as one of only forty drivers who received multiple votes in the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame 360 sprint car driver of the Year 2014 poll. The 2012 USCS National “Rookie of the Year” Jeff Willingham who hails from Ripley, Mississippi collected third place honors for his efforts in the final 214 USCS National standings. His finishes improved four positions from the 2013 season. Willingham also finished in fourth place in the tough USCS Mid South Thunder Tour regional series standings. He finished in sixth place in the final standings of the USCS Southern Thunder region. Another Bartlett, Tennessee racer, Anthony Nicholson ran the entire Mid South Thunder Tour regional series of 20 races and enough USCS Southern Thunder Tour events to accumulate the fourth place honors for the National title chase. Nicholson visited the www.rockauto.com USCS victory lane six times to accept feature winner honors during the 2014 season. He was the winner of the series season finale at Poplar Bluff Speedway on October 11, 2014. Three time USCS Mid South Thunder Tour regional series Champion and 2013 USCS National Champion, Tim Crawley from Benton, Arkansas rounded out the top five drivers in the series National point standings. Crawley also was tied with Nicholson for the series second most wins during the season with six feature wins. All six of his wins came in Mid-South regional series races. He ran all but three of the Mid South races and finished in sixth place in the final standings in the USCS Mid South Thunder regional series final standings. Terry Witherspoon from Jacksonville, Florida who finished in ___ place the 2013 National point standings, but, improved _positions to lead the next group of drivers in sixth place. Witherspoon also finished in fifth place in the USCS Southern Thunder regional series standings. The 2012 USCS Rookie of the Year, Jeff Willingham from Ripley, Mississippi followed Nicholson to the stage with a seventh place finish in the National standings. Willingham also collected awards for a seventh place finish in the USCS Mid South regional series and an eighth place finish in the final Southern Thunder region standings. Three-time 2014 USCS feature winner Eric Riggins, Jr. from Charlotte, North Carolina who was the 2010 USCS Southern Thunder regional series Rookie of the Year was recognized for a seventh place finish in the final USCS National sprint car standings. The nineteen-year old Riggins won on August 30th at Harris Speedway and visited the www.rockauto.com USCS victory lane twice on back-to-back nights in September 29th and 20th at Senoia Raceway. Riggins who competed mostly in the USCS Southern Thunder regional series finished fourth in those point standings. The 2014 USCS “Rookie of the Year” Brandon McLain from Indian Trail, North Carolina showed promise for the future by finishing in eighth place in the National Championship point standings. The rookie driver also scored enough steady performances in the USCS Southern Thunder regional series to finish in the third place behind National Champion Gray and Morgan Turpen in the series, Brandon McLain also finished in third place behind Morgan Turpen and Terry Gray in the USCS Road to Atlanta Hoosier asphalt 5 race pavement mini-series. His Father, Doug McLain, received recognition as 2014 USCS Rookie of the Year Crew Chief. Greg Merritt from Nesbit, Mississippi, who focused his efforts primarily on the USCS Mid-South Thunder regional series, was honored for a ninth place finish in the final 2014 USCS National point standings. He additionally finished in the sixth position in the 2014 USCS Mid South Thunder standings. Ronny Howard, who also calls Nesbit, Mississippi home, rounded out the top ten drivers in the final USCS National point standings. The second generation veteran USCS sprint car driver finished in seventh place in the talent laden USCS Mid South regional standings as well. Johnny Bridges from Cherryville, North Carolina who won the pavement opener at Anderson Motor Speedway and set fast time twice, before missing the finale, finished in eighth place in the standings. Jake McLain from Indian Trail, North Carolina followed Bridges in 9th place and USCS regular Joe Larkin from Suwannee, Georgia rounded out the top ten drivers in the paved track standings. One hundred and twenty-nine different drivers competed in the thirty-five 18th anniversary USCS Outlaw Thunder Tour presented by K&N Filter’s events. Eleven different drivers won 2014 USCS Outlaw Thunder Tour main events. Those included Derek Hagar, who led the series victory column with eight wins. Hagar was followed by Tim Crawley and Anthony Nicholson who tied with six feature wins each. Joe Aguilar from Tampa, Florida and Eric Riggins, Jr. were next with three feature wins.
