Swindell Charges From C Main to Top 10 During Chili Bowl Preliminary Night

Inside Line Promotions - TULSA, Okla. (Jan. 16, 2017) - Sammy Swindell showcased another strong performance at the Lucas Oil Chili Bowl Nationals Presented by General Tire.

Unfortunately, misfortune started and ended his outing during the 31 st edition of the marquee midget event last week inside the River Spirit Expo Center.

After placing 16th on Tuesday during the Vacuworx Invitational Race of Champions, which was used as a glorified test session since he drew the No. 12 to start on the sixth row, Swindell opened his preliminary night on Wednesday by advancing from sixth to fifth place in a tough heat race.

"We wound up in a heat race where the bottom was fast with a guy on top and on the bottom," he said. "It was getting to the last lap and the one in front of me messed up and was back from the guy on the inside. I was going to pass him and he saw it so he closed the door big time. That put us back a ways further than we needed to be."

The fifth-place finish didn't provide enough points for Swindell to make a qualifier. He then won a C Main to transfer into the 14th starting position in a B Main.

"We easily won the C Main and getting through the B Main, once we ran a few laps the cars fall off lap after lap and our car maintains," he said. "At the last we got up there and three guys were running the bottom. I went to the top and was going to pass them all the next corner and then they pulled up there. I knew I was going to transfer so I didn't force the issue. There wasn't going to be the room there so it was the wise choice to get locked in instead of trying to gain another row and not get to transfer at all. I knew we'd be good in the next race so I kind of let it go."

Swindell secured the fourth-and-final transfer position to move onto the main event, which he lined up last - 24th.

"In the main the race track was too good on the bottom for a long time," he said. "As the race went on and guys started to drop a bit we were just as strong. When they went to the top I could run the bottom. If we'd have had another five or six laps we'd have passed another few guys."

Swindell charged to a seventh-place result, which earned him the Hard Charger Award for passing the most cars. The finish also lined him up on the outside of the fourth row in a B Main on Saturday, when the top six transferred into the A Main.

Swindell spent nearly the first half of the race just outside a transfer position before another competitor tried a slide job that came up short as he smacked into the side of Swindell, spinning him around.

Swindell, who was forced to restart at the back, rallied through the field and closed in on the final transfer position as the white flag was being waved.

"We were able to still run the bottom when everyone else had to be on the top," he said. "We got up through there and then someone running the top came all the way down the track and ran into us in turn one to wipe us both out."

Swindell was challenging for sixth position when the incident occurred, spinning both drivers out. Once again, Swindell had to restart at the back and he finished 14th.

Bruce Jr. Starts Strong Before Bad Luck Strikes During Chili Bowl Prelim Night

Inside Line Promotions - TULSA, Okla. (Jan. 16, 2017) - Tony Bruce Jr. was on pace for a career-best performance last week during the 31st annual Lucas Oil Chili Bowl Nationals Presented by General Tire.

The Team Eights competitor maneuvered from third place to win a heat race before advancing from fifth to third place during a qualifier to open Tuesday's preliminary night. That ranked him eighth in overall points out of approximately 90 racers, which was good enough to lock directly into the A Main.

"We had a little luck in the heat and was able to win and then I was able to move forward in the qualifier to get us more points," he said. "I had a good car in the A Main and was battling with some guys who are consistently in the A Main on Saturday each year."

Bruce Jr. maintained a top 10 throughout the first half of the race until a parts failure relegated him to the pits early.

"We were running 10th right around midway when the timing belt broke," he said. "If it wasn't for a little bad luck having a belt break we had a good opportunity to make the A Main on Saturday night. If you have one DNF at the Chili Bowl it almost ruins your entire week in terms of making the Saturday A Main."

Bruce Jr., who was credited with a 23rd-place finish, would have likely locked into a Saturday B Main if he had finished in the position he was running. Instead he was relegated toward the back of a D Main on Saturday.

"We had a really good car there in the D Main," he said. "I got a good jump on the first start, but someone spun out and the start got called back. On the second start I didn't get as good of a jump and lost a few spots. I had to fight my way back up. We got to eighth and caught some really good cars. Whenever you get in the C Mains and D Mains on Saturday there's nothing but good race cars. You have to have everything go your way and we didn't on the start."

Bruce Jr. rallied into eighth place, but the drivers racing for the final transfer position were side by side on the final lap and Bruce Jr. was unable to advance any further.

Baughman Improves Speed and Comfort Throughout Week at Chili Bowl

Inside Line Promotions - TULSA, Okla. (Jan. 17, 2017) - Josh Baughman found comfort last week during the 31st annual Lucas Oil Chili Bowl Nationals Presented by General Tire.

Unfortunately, it came during the finale of the marquee midget event after a frustrating preliminary night buried him in the field inside the River Spirit Expo Center.

"It's hard going into that deal and not racing with those guys and me not being familiar with those types of cars," he said. "We struggled to get the car right on our prelim night."

Baughman, who was driving for Jim Neuman, kicked off the event on Thursday with his preliminary night. Baughman finished where he started - fourth - in a heat race, which didn't earn enough points to advance into a qualifier.

"That heat race put us behind, not being able to make the qualifier," he said. "We just couldn't get the car tight enough all night."

Baughman rallied from fifth to second place in a C Main to transfer into the back of a B Main, in which he finished 14th. That relegated him to an H Main on Saturday.

"We changed the setup quite a bit and that really helped me get more comfortable in the car on Saturday," he said. "I felt like we were really fast, but by then it was too late."

Baughman won the H Main to transfer into the back of a G Main. He then rallied from 13th to sixth and narrowly missed transferring into an F Main.

"We got faster as the week went on," he said. "I wish we could have started our preliminary night with how we were on Saturday, but that's how it goes. It was a fun week and I want to thank Jim Neuman and his team for the opportunity."

Baughman is scheduled to open his sprint car season on March 3 at LoneStar Speedway in Kilgore, Texas, for the East Texas Lone Star Shootout before racing the following night at Gator Motorplex in Willis, Texas, for the Gator Bash with the World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series.
