Kulhanek Making National Sprint League Debut at Knoxville on Saturday

Inside Line Promotions - PAIGE, Texas (July 27, 2016) - Ray Allen Kulhanek will make his debut with the National Sprint League this Saturday at Knoxville Raceway.

Kulhanek will pilot his own 410ci winged sprint car at the half-mile oval in Knoxville, Iowa, before driving for Bruce Griffith on Sunday at Badlands Motor Speedway in Brandon, S.D., with the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour.

"I'm excited to get to Knoxville to get some laps before the Knoxville Nationals," Kulhanek said. "We are taking my car and Bruce's car in his trailer so we'll swap cars for Sunday."

Kulhanek is coming off a disappointing weekend with the ASCS Gulf South Region. He kicked off the action last Friday at Heart O' Texas Speedway in Waco, Texas, where Kulhanek won a heat race in the Griffith entry to make the feature redraw. He then pulled the No. 4 during the random draw to start the main event on the outside of the second row.

"I started out the race decent," he said. "I was keeping pace and ran third past halfway. The longer the race went the worse I got. Cautions at the end of the race kind of killed me. Normally I like having a caution to bunch everyone back up, but I was a sitting duck. I got lucky just to hold on. I felt like we had thrown an anchor out."

Kulhanek salvaged a sixth-place result, which marked his 12th top 10 of the season.

The weekend wrapped up on Saturday at Cotton Bowl Speedway, where Kulhanek advanced from third to second place in a heat race to earn a spot in the feature redraw. This time he got the No. 2 to start on the outside of the front row.

"I battled with Scottie McDonald for second for a while," he said. "Tommy Bryant slid me when we were in lapped traffic. Coming right out of that corner the motor let go."

Kulhanek was in a three-car battle for second place midway through the feature when the mechanical problem relegated him to the pits early. He was credited with a 15th-place finish.

Herrera Sweeps ASCS National Tour Weekend at Black Hills Speedway

Inside Line Promotions - RAPID CITY, S.D. (July 27, 2016) - Johnny Herrera swept The Rushmore Rumble last weekend at Black Hills Speedway.

The two Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour wins give him four triumphs this season and helped him close within 134 points of the leader in the championship standings.

"It was a good weekend," he said. "You want to put yourself in a good position and we did that."

Herrera maneuvered from fifth to third place during a heat race on Friday. That earned him the final spot into the feature redraw, where a little luck was on his side.

"We were the last one in and there was a No. 1 and a No. 8 remaining for the guy ahead of me and he pulled the No. 8," he said. "Sometimes it works out that way. That was really big, especially for the track conditions."

Herrera took advantage of the pole position as he led the first two laps of the feature before Aaron Reutzel took over the top spot. Herrera reclaimed the lead on Lap 6 and held off Reutzel for the remainder of the race to garner the win.

"I just ran hard, but I paced myself," he said. "I didn't want to burn a tire off and have a flat. I tried to pick my way through traffic well. I think it helped being a little more patient, which comes as an old guy as they call me."

That locked Herrera into the feature redraw for Saturday's program, when he pulled the No. 2 to start the main event on the outside of the front row.

"Luckily we drew the No. 2, which was a good position to be in," he said. "We led the race from start to finish."

Herrera led the distance to earn his fourth win with the series, which ranks second overall. It also provides momentum entering a couple of big weeks on tap.

Herrera will compete with the ASCS National Tour this Thursday at Park Jefferson International Speedway in Jefferson, S.D., and Sunday at Badlands Motor Speedway in Brandon, S.D. He will also race on Saturday at Knoxville Raceway in Knoxville, Iowa, to test one final time before the 360 Knoxville Nationals the following week.

"I think we're in a good place," he said. "When we went out to the West we were off just a bit and didn't have the right balance. I feel good about where we're at now."

QUICK RESULTS -
