By Chris Tilley

MARYVILLE, TN (September 13, 2013)—Billy Ogle Jr. of Knoxville, TN led flag-to-flag in the Southern Regional Racing Series-sanctioned Ole Smoky Moonshine Classic at Smoky Mountain Speedway in Maryville, TN on Friday Night September 13, 2013.

This was Ogle’s first win of the season at the Speedway where he picked up the $3,000 first place prize while driving the Larry Garner owned, Blount Excavating & Motorsports and Stower’s CAT sponsored Vic Hill Racing Engines powered Rocket Chassis. Ogle became the ninth different winner in 10 Southern Regional Racing Series events and became the seventh different winner in eight Super Late Model events held at Smoky Mountain Speedway.

From the drop of Darrell Watson’s green flag Ogle was dominant. He was the overall quick qualifier of the 24 entrants with a quick 16:449 second lap. Ogle led the entire 35-lap distance for his third career SRRS-victory. The remaining drivers in the top-five we’re Skip Arp of Georgetown, TN; Ray Cook of Brasstown, NC; Chip Brindle of Chatsworth, GA and Greeneville, TN’s Brett Miller.

Three caution flags slowed the Late Model main event that took just 15 minutes to complete. Sammie Russell brought out the first yellow on lap two, Vic Hill brings out the second yellow flag on lap six and Joe Denby brought out the third and final yellow on lap 23. Heat Winners we’re Ray Cook, Tommy Kerr and Jason Welshan. The Fast Car Dash was won by Chris Wilson.

Jason Welshan of Maryville, TN and Josh Putnam of Florence, AL came into the Smoky Mountain Speedway event tied for the SRRS Points lead but after Putnam finished one spot better than Welshan, Putnam left Smoky Mountain with a five point lead. The battle for the championship will come down to the wire with just two events remaining on the SRRS schedule (October 5th at Duck River, TN and November 2nd at Smoky Mountain, TN).

Other event winners of the night we’re Adam Beeler of Knoxville, TN in the Crate Late Model main event, David Clark in the Street Stock main event and Marty Phillips in the Mini Stock main event.

Smoky Mountain Speedway will return to action this coming Saturday Night with the King of the Mountain/Late Model mania event as the Southern All Stars Dirt Racing Series makes their third season appearance paying $5,000 to win. The Crate Late Models will also be running paying $1,000 to win, the Limited Late Models have been added to the lineup paying $1,500 to win and the Street Stocks gunning for $300 to win.
