Randy Weaver Claims Southern Nationals Bonus Series March Meltdown at Boyd’s

By Chris Tilley, Series P.R. Coordinator

RINGGOLD, GA (March 21, 2015)—Randy Weaver of Crossville, Tenn. took the lead from Dale McDowell on lap 17 to go on to win the March Meltdown event at Boyd’s Speedway on Saturday Night March 21st.

The Crossville, Tenn. driver claimed the $4,000 payday while driving the Outlaw Racing Southeast, Stone Lane Cleaning & Excavating, Mission Transport, A.F. Stone Professional Medical Services and The Bailey Company sponsored Cornett Racing Engine powered Longhorn Chassis.

McDowell and Jason Hiett brought the field of 23 to the green flag and McDowell powered to the front in the early going. Weaver would slip past second place driver Hiett on the first lap to secure the runner up position as the field crossed under the stripe for the first completed lap.

By the ninth and tenth lap, heavy traffic was in front of McDowell and that put Weaver’s Longhorn on the back bumper of the Team Dillon Warrior of McDowell. By the 16th lap, Weaver’s hot pursuit was followed by the takeover for the lead spot coming off the fourth corner on lap 17.

The first of only two yellow flags would wave on lap 18 as Jason Croft brought his slowing Capital Race Car to a stop on the front chute. Croft would retire from the event. On the restart, McDowell clipped the rear of Weaver’s car sending McDowell into the spin cycle in turn four as he was running second. Weaver would hold the lead for the final restart with Jason Hiett, Donald McIntosh and Bub McCool in tow.

With just five laps to go, Donald McIntosh made a bold move to overpower second place runner Jason Hiett and take the position behind Weaver and hold it until the finish. Behind Weaver, McIntosh and Hiett at the stripe it was Bub McCool and David Payne completing the top five.

Thirty-six cars entered the event. Randy Weaver claimed the overall Fast Time Award by blistering the 3/8th’s mile oval clocking a 13.810 second lap. Dale McDowell won the Dash event. Heat Race winners were Donald McIntosh, Riley Hickman, Bub McCool and Billy Ogle Jr. Stacy Boles used an emergency provisional to get into the event.

The Southern Nationals Bonus Series will be back in action this Friday Night March 27th at the Tri-County Race Track in Brasstown, N.C. for the track’s Season Opener paying $3,000-to-win.
