Five cautions slowed the race as lap three Zack Mitchell slowed in turn two, then lap eight it was Jeff Franklin spinning in turn two. Wood went to Victory Lane over sixth starting Billy Ogle Jr. Ray Cook was third after starting tenth, then Chris Ferguson fourth and Casey Roberts was fifth. Dillon Wood takes back-to-back Memorial Day Championships at Tri-County

By Chris Tilley

BRASSTOWN, NC (May 27, 2013)—Dillon Wood put an exclamation point on a very profitable Memorial Day Weekend!

The New Smyrna Beach, FL driver earned $3,000 on Monday Night May 27th as he claimed back-to-back Circuit World-sponsored Memorial Day Championship Victories at the Tri-County Race Track in Brasstown, NC. The driver known as ‘Sunshine’ pulled into Victory Lane while driving the Keyser Manufacturing, Integra Shocks, GW Performance and Gotta Race sponsored Clements Racing Engines powered Rocket Chassis. This was Wood’s second win of the weekend as on Saturday Night he claimed $4,000 at Smoky Mountain Speedway in Maryville, TN with the Ultimate Late Model Series tour.

In preliminary qualifying action that set the field, Toccoa, GA’s Casey Roberts lowered the track’s qualifying record to a 12:434 second lap of the 18 entries at the Ray Cook-promoted track which drew a record-high 74 cars in five divisions for action on a beautiful Memorial Day evening.

Polesitter Roberts and Wood brought the field to life for the start of the 40-lapper with Wood winning the drag race into turn one and leading the opening two circuits. Roberts would slip around Wood on the inside coming off turn four to take the lead on lap three. After a lap 30 caution, Wood would regain the lead from Casey Roberts and lead the remaining distance for his back-to-back win in the annual Circuit World-sponsored Memorial Day Championship. Wood crossed the line ahead of fourth starting Chip Brindle, who made his first-ever start at Tri-County in the Baird Transport Barry Wright Race Car. Third was seventh starting David Payne in the Payne Tire MasterSbilt while 11th starting Johnny Chastain finished fourth and ninth starting George Mashburn finished fifth. Sixth starting Daniel Baggerly of Rural Retreat, VA also made his first Tri-County start in the En-Compass Solutions Rocket Chassis and finished sixth. 14th starting Kyle Bronson made his first-ever Super Late Model start and his first Tri-County start as he made the long six-hour haul from Mississippi after competing three straight nights Crate racing. He finished seventh. Completing the top ten was Randy Nichols, Rodney Weeks and Jamie Oliver.

The first of five yellow flags would wave on the seventh lap as Gabe Wilson slowed in turn four. The next yellow would be lap 22 as George Mashburn spun into the infield in turn two. The lap 27 caution fell for Shawn Chastain coming to rest at the top of turn four and the yellow would again wave on lap 30 as Casey Roberts jumped the cushion and slammed the outside wall in turn four. Looked as if something broke on the car causing it to turn right and bring out the fourth yellow flag. The final yellow would wave with four laps to go on the 36th circuit as George Mashburn came to a rest in turn four.
