Sides Returning to Northeast This Weekend for World of Outlaws Doubleheader

Inside Line Promotions - FULTON, N.Y. (Oct. 12, 2016) - Jason Sides has certainly put in the miles during the past few weeks.

Sides has made several trips back and forth from his home in Tennessee to the Northeast, including for a one-day World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series show at Fulton Speedway last Saturday.

The night began with Sides qualifying 14th quickest before he placed sixth in a heat race, which was one spot out of locking into the main event.

"We didn't make it out of our heat," he said. "I don't know what happened. One of the local guys beat us so we had to run the B Main."

Sides won the Last Chance Showdown to lock into the 21st starting position for the main event.

"Starting in the back I thought we'd be decent," he said. "It was a narrow track getting into turn turns one and three. Turn three got a little higher getting in, but even down the straightaways it was narrow."

Sides picked up a handful of positions before he finished 17th.

He will once again return to the Northeast this weekend for World of Outlaws races on Friday at Williams Grove Speedway in Mechanicsburg, Pa., for the National Open and on Saturday at Port Royal Speedway in Port Royal, Pa.

"I'm sure they will have a lot of cars on Friday," he said. "It will make for a tough show for the one night. Any time you go to Williams Grove it's tough. Port Royal is tough as well. I've run second and third there a couple of times, but we've struggled to produce good results there lately."

His career-best finish at Williams Grove Speedway is a second-place result and his best World of Outlaws finish at Port Royal Speedway is a seventh-place result.

Herrera is Devil's Bowl Bound Following Top-Five Finish at Timberline

Inside Line Promotions - CORLEY, Texas (Oct. 12, 2016) - Johnny Herrera is excited to tackle the Winter Nationals this weekend at Devil's Bowl Speedway.

Herrera, who is a previous winner of the marquee event at the half-mile oval in Mesquite, Texas, will invade the 43rd edition of the doubleheader this Friday and Saturday.

"Being that first big race since Lanny has passed away it'd be special to win," Herrera said in reference to longtime Devil's Bowl Speedway promotor Lanny Edwards, who recently passed away. "We've had success there and we've won there. The way we've been running here as of late I'm looking forward to getting down there and hopefully getting a victory during at least one of the two nights if not both."

Herrera has had a couple of strong rebounds to bad starting positions this month. Last Saturday he advanced from fourth to third place during an ASCS Red River Region race at Timberline Speedway. That locked him into the feature redraw, where he pulled the highest number - eight - during the random redraw to start the main event on the outside of the fourth row.

"We had a few national cars there as well as the top regional guys so there were some good cars there," he said. "We drew the eight and on that track typically it's really hard to pass. It doesn't get locked down rubber, but it cleans off and wears the tires. It gets to a point where it's hard to pass. I got two cars on the start and then we got two more on restarts and that's all I could get."

Herrera maneuvered from eighth to fourth place, which was his 25th top five of the season and earned the Hard Charger Award for passing the most cars.

The month began the previous Saturday (Oct. 1) at I-80 Speedway in Greenwood, Neb., for the Midwest Fall Brawl V with the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour. Herrera placed eighth and fourth, respectively, during twin heat races before he charged from eighth to third in a B Main to garner a transfer position into the main event.

"We got behind early in the heat races, but rebounded during the night," he said. "We made some changes and tightened our car up too much for where we were starting in the A Main. We got up through there and up to 10th at one time, but ended 11th. Of course you always want to run better."

Herrera rallied from 21st to post an 11th-place finish, which was tied for the most cars passed.

QUICK RESULTS -

Smith Amped to Take on the World of Outlaws on His Turf This Weekend

Inside Line Promotions - FULTON, N.Y. (Oct. 12, 2016) - Ryan Smith has a ton of confidence as he gets set to take on the World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series in Central Pennsylvania this weekend.

"Our old Maxim is working well," he said. "We have great support and great team chemistry. We have a strong bullet under the hood, our best engine. The World of Outlaws program puts all the emphasis on qualifying and we have been saving this motor for a weekend like this. It's pretty fresh; we've only run it about four or five times."

Smith will compete on Friday at Williams Grove Speedway in Mechanicsburg for the single-day National Open. He will then travel to Port Royal Speedway in Port Royal on Saturday.

"We've been good all year at Port Royal, finishing in the top 10 just about every time," he said. "We got our first-ever win at Williams Grove a few weeks ago so I have a lot of confidence going there as well. We've had speed all year, but just couldn't get over the hump. The last month we've found some things and now we can contend for wins.

"The whole key to the weekend is qualifying. So much emphasis is put on those two laps with the Outlaws format. If you don't time in the top eight your chances of winning a heat and getting into the dash are pretty slim. So you have to have your motor on kill when you hit the track for qualifying. It's really tough on the low budget teams that don't have that killer motor. I'm confident in the bullet we have."

Smith is coming off a good performance against the Outlaws at Fulton Speedway last Saturday.

"We laid down a good qualifying lap, won our heat and made it into the dash," he said. "They drew the worst number you could get for the dash invert - an eight. So I started sixth and finished six, but that gave us a great feature starting spot."

Smith, who qualified seventh quickest before winning a heat race and ending sixth in the dash, lined up on the outside of the third row for the main event.

"I was a bit too tight early in the feature, but once I started to get rolling … well then the caution came out," he said. "Sometime after the restart we picked up a shock problem. It pulled the thread out of the eye that screws into the shaft. I've never seen that happen. The track was rough entering turn three and that's where it probably happened. I just hung on from there to finish 11th. We probably could have run fifth or sixth. But all and all it was a good night and I know I can run with these guys."

QUICK RESULTS -

Oct. 8 - Fulton Speedway in Fulton, N.Y. - Qualifying: 7; Heat race: 1 (2); Dash: 6 (6); Feature: 11 (6).
