Sides Moving on Following Frustrating Performance During Knoxville Nationals

Inside Line Promotions - KNOXVILLE, Iowa (Aug. 15, 2016) - Jason Sides is ready to put the 56th annual 5-Hour ENERGY Knoxville Nationals behind him.

Last weekend's marquee sprint car event didn't go well for Sides, who was just a tick off throughout the event at Knoxville Raceway.

"Just move on to the next week," he said. "It all starts with qualifying. The heat races didn't have much passing. There were a lot of good cars in the B Main and C Main. We got a little better in the B Main, but just came up a couple of spots short."

Sides timed in 17th quickest during qualifying to open his preliminary night last Wednesday. He then placed seventh in a heat race before advancing from 10th to sixth in the B Main to miss transferring into the main event by only two spots.

He returned to the half-mile oval on Friday and qualified 16th quickest before ending sixth in a heat race and fifth in a B Main.

The night concluded with the World Challenge, which Sides started on the outside of the front row. The winner of the race earned a provisional into Saturday's main event.

Sides led the first lap before Kraig Kinser took the lead on Lap 2. Sides regained the lead on the favored bottom groove a couple of laps later, but a caution came out before a lap was completed. Kinser retained the top spot and didn't leave the bottom for the remainder of the race.

"We got too committed to the top and got the tires heated up," Sides said. "I just overworked it trying to run Kraig down. It was one of those opportunities to get back in there, but it just didn't pan out for us."

Sides ended sixth. It marked his 25th top 10 of the season.

The event ended on Saturday with Sides advancing from 12th to ninth in the C Main.

He is slated to return to action this Sunday at Angell Park Speedway in Sun Prairie, Wis., with the World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series.

Kulhanek Takes Many Lessons From Knoxville Nationals

Inside Line Promotions - KNOXVILLE, Iowa (Aug. 15, 2016) - Ray Allen Kulhanek can't wait to return to the Knoxville Nationals next year after spending this year's 56th edition of the 5-Hour ENERGY Knoxville Nationals learning.

"It's tough to come out here and not get to race 410s very often and to come run Knoxville," he said. "I'm disappointed. I had a goal to at least be in the C Main and I didn't reach that goal. Coming to a place like here you definitely learn the rights and wrongs of everything. These guys will make you eat dirt."

The event began on the wrong foot for Kulhanek, who was forced to borrow an engine to compete after he damaged his 410ci engine during the last outing.

"I want to thank Aaron Reutzel for loaning me a motor, Bruce Griffith for his help and our partners for the support to tackle this event," he said. "Also, a big thanks to everyone who participated in the GoFundMe deal for our team to help offset our costs."

Kulhanek kicked off the weekend on Thursday by qualifying 51st quickest, which was one spot out of making the heat races and sent him to the C Main.

"I was a little more comfortable coming into this deal with my engine," he said. "That threw us off on the gear for qualifying night. We didn't follow the track very well when it was time to start taking gear out of it. Things like that I learned and it made me open my eyes to a few other things that take place back home that now you're questioning."

Kulhanek scratched from the remainder of the night and he returned to the half-mile oval on Friday, when he qualified 30th quickest in his group and placed ninth in a heat race before scoring a third-place result in the C Main. That earned a transfer into the B Main, where Kulhanek advanced from 22 nd to 19th.

That lined him up 20th in the D Main during Saturday's finale.

"Nothing really went in the right direction," he said after placing 16th. "It was a steady struggle. We kept digging and digging to make the best. I learned a lot that I get to take back home and I'm a lot more prepared to come back and do this next year."

Kulhanek will return to 360ci competition this weekend when he is set to race on Friday at Heart O' Texas Speedway in Waco, Texas, and Saturday at Lone Star Speedway in Kilgore, Texas, with the ASCS Gulf South Region.

Big Game Motorsports and Lasoski Place 13th at Knoxville Nationals

Inside Line Promotions - KNOXVILLE, Iowa (Aug. 15, 2016) - Big Game Motorsports driver Danny Lasoski advanced into his 26th career Knoxville Nationals A Main last weekend during the sport's premier event at Knoxville Raceway.

Although the Muddy backed team didn't end with a win, Lasoski became only the third driver in the history of the prestigious event to surpass the 25-start mark when he placed 13th on Saturday to cap the 56th annual 5-Hour ENERGY Knoxville Nationals.

"We are all about winning and unfortunately we didn't get that done," he said. "It was a trying week for us, but I know the guys are already working hard to put us in contention next year."

The event began for Lasoski last Thursday during preliminary action, which started with the Muddy sponsored team qualifying 19th quickest. Lasoski lined up fifth in a heat race and battled for the final lock-in position to the main event until the checkered flag. His fifth-place result relegated him to the B Main.

Had Lasoski advanced one more position in the heat race he would have started the main event on the outside of the front row. Instead, he lined up on the inside of the seventh row of the B Main. Lasoski charged from 13th to fifth, but once again came up one spot shy of transferring into the main event.

He returned to the half-mile oval on Friday and promptly took advantage of the second opportunity. Lasoski qualified fourth quickest in his group before he finished second in a heat race to lock into the sixth starting position for the main event. He then maneuvered into a third-place result in the main event to garner one of the four lock-in positions to Saturday's A Main.

"The Friday format gives you an extra opportunity to get yourself locked in," he said. "We had an efficient night to achieve that goal. Guy Forbrook and the guys gave me a great car and we got the job done."

The podium finished marked the 20th top five of the season for the Muddy backed team, which lined Lasoski up on the inside of the 10 th row for Saturday's $150,000-to-win main event.

Lasoski quickly charged into the top 10 by Lap 15. He then spent the remainder of the 50-lap feature battling just outside the top 10 before he ended 13 th.

"It's a tough task to charge from 19th to win and it doesn't happen very often," he said. "We were really strong early, but struggled throughout the second half of the race."

The Muddy sponsored team will take this weekend off before returning to National Sprint League competition on Aug. 27 at Knoxville Raceway.

Herrera Excited for Return to ASCS National Action After Rough Knoxville Nationals

Inside Line Promotions - KNOXVILLE, Iowa (Aug. 15, 2016) - Johnny Herrera is happy to return to 360ci sprint car competition this weekend after a frustrating outing during the 56th annual 5-Hour ENERGY Knoxville Nationals.

Herrera will compete this Saturday at St. Francois County Raceway in Farmington, Mo., and Sunday at Missouri State Fair Speedway in Sedalia, Mo., for the High Roller Classic with the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour.

"That's where we make our bread and butter," he said. "We've got to try to get that championship so we'll get back to that and try to make that better."

Herrera is fresh off the sport's biggest event, which was hosted by Knoxville Raceway last weekend. He kicked off the Knoxville Nationals preliminary action last Wednesday by qualifying 39th quickest. Herrera then placed second in a heat race to lock into the 19th starting position for the main event.

"Dirty air is really big," he said. "I started in the front in the heat and it wasn't so bad because I was in clean air. I started in the back of the feature and the first four or five laps I was like, 'What happened to this race car?'"

Herrera ended 23rd in the feature. He returned to the half-mile oval on Friday for another opportunity. Herrera timed in 29th quickest in his group before advancing from 10th to eighth place in a heat race and from 20th to 11th in a B Main.

"I thought I had a really good race car as far as the best balance I've felt here (in the B Main)," he said. "On Saturday my balance went away and I was no good with my race car."

Herrera wrapped up the event by finishing 10th in the D Main on Saturday.

"I was tight, balled up," he said. "I was just too tight. The dirty air is twice as bad in the 410 and really bad here. It was a big learning week for me as far as getting the car to roll around here good. I've won a lot of races here, but you wouldn't know it by the way we ran. It's just a different place to race."
