Springfield Raceway – 30 Race Brothers Show-Me Racin Series
Late Models

Justin Wells Wins at Springfield Raceway
By Clarissa Essary

Saturday April 25 the Race Brothers Farm and Home Supply Show-Me Racin Series was back in action at the Springfield Raceway. Thirty late models lined the pits all vying for the thousand dollar first place finish. Fans filled the grand stands ready to see a show full of action packed racing. It would be an exciting race all the way to the checkered, but Justin Wells in the 98 was the one who came away with the top spot.
Four heat races began the night for the thirty late model drivers. This week the drivers were put into each heat based on their total points. Then each drew for their starting position within their heat. Rookie of the Year contender Larry Campbell in the 15L took the win in heat one. He was followed by the 115 of Shane Essary and the 21 of Jordan Holloway. The 98 of Justin Wells, 25x of Rex Merritt, and 7e of Phil Edmondson rounded out the top three positions in heat number two. The third heat of the night went to the 33 of Rick Lebow, followed by the 50 of Kathy Tonoli and the 73 of Bill McMurtrie. Ken Essary in the 55, Leslie Essary in the 5, and Kevin Henson in the 15H rounded out the top three in the fourth and final heat of the night.
The top sixteen cars in passing points would transfer from the heats straight to the A Main. The remaining fourteen cars were left to battle their way through the two B Features. Rookie of the Year contender 9L of Chris Lap and the 113 of Adam Brown were the top two transfer positions from B Feature number one. The 00 of Jim Fulp and the 31 of Ron Johnson took the final two transfer positions into the A Main. The 25b of Chris Morelock and the 44 of Randy Galloway received the two points-provisional positions.
Twenty-two cars lined up on the front straightway behind the Country Dodge pace truck. Jordan Holloway would set the pace from the pole with the 7e of Phil Edmondson to his outside. After the traditional four-wide salute to the fans, the guys & gal were lined up ready for the green to drop. The flagman threw the green and twenty two late models began racing around the 1/4 mile dirt track of Springfield Raceway. The 21 of Jordan Holloway jumped out to the lead, but he had the 5 of Leslie Essary and the 7e of Phil Edmondson right behind him. The 21 began pulling away, but a caution was brought out on lap four for the 55 of Ken Essary who spun in turn two. On the restart the 98 of Justin Wells flew from fourth to second in turns one and two. Now he was right on the bumper of Holloway, pressuring him on every part of the track. It was an exciting back and forth race between the 21 and the 98. They began catching lap traffic, as Wells was slowly gaining on Holloway. On lap twenty Wells was finally able to pass Holloway for first in turns three and four. Holloway wasn’t going to give up that easily. He stayed right on the bumper waiting for the opportunity to take back the top spot. The white flag flew and Holloway went for a final try to pass Wells. The 21dove in too hard into turns one and two, lost grip, and spun. The 98 of Justin Wells would be the first to take the checkered, winning the second race of the 2009 Show-Me season. The top five followed; Justin Wells in the 98, Leslie Essary in the 5, Shane Essary in the 115, Larry Campbell in the 15L, and Justin Asplin in the 77a.
