Herrera Powers to Season-Opening Victory to Kick Off Chase for Championship

Inside Line Promotions - MESQUITE, Texas (March 22, 2016) - Johnny Herrera opened his 2016 campaign for the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour championship with the strongest message possible.

Herrera dominated the season opener last Thursday at Heart O' Texas Speedway in Waco, Texas, where he led all 30 laps to score his first career season-opening win with the series and the 14th triumph of his career.

"Coming out of the box and winning the first race is great," he said. "It's great for my confidence and the whole team in general. Last year we got some regional wins in April and May, but it took us until June to get a national win. Now we've got that out of the way."

The event began with Herrera maneuvering from fifth to third place in a heat race. That earned him a position in the feature redraw, where he pulled the No. 4 to start the main event on the outside of the second row.

"I don't think I changed a whole lot on the car the entire night," he said. "I was good on the start of the feature. Going into the first corner most people went to the bottom. I came out of turn two in second. Going into turn three I was in second and the leader dropped to the bottom. The seas parted and there we were."

Herrera hustled to the top spot on the opening lap and he never looked back despite a handful of cautions.

"The car was phenomenal," he said. "There were a couple of close calls, one in traffic and there was a hole in turn one. One time I got it bouncing pretty good and almost off the edge of the track, but it worked out well for us."

The victory propelled Herrera into a doubleheader at Devil's Bowl Speedway, where the opening night was rained out last Friday.

"Me and my crew guy went with a little different setup on Saturday," he said. "We wanted to try it. We started the night that way and just weren't very good. I didn't feel good in hot laps or the heat race. We made some changes for the qualifier and we still weren't very good."

Herrera advanced from fifth to second place in a heat race, but dropped from fourth to fifth place in a qualifier. That was good enough to lock him into the 11th starting position for the main event.

"We put our heads together and went back to what I would do normally," he said. "We went back to basics and that was really good. We just started a little too far back there."

Herrera rallied to record a fifth-place result, which kept him atop the ASCS National Tour championship standings.

He is slated to compete this Friday at Cotton Bowl Speedway in Paige, Texas, and Saturday at Bronco Raceway Park in Cleveland, Texas, with the ASCS National Tour.

Tankersley Fights Forward before Late Miscue during Season Opener

Inside Line Promotions - MESQUITE, Texas (March 22, 2015) - Channin Tankersley made a late decision last week to kick off his season at Devil's Bowl Speedway.

"We got everything done so we decided to go up there," he said. "My goal was to shake the car down, but unfortunately we were involved in a crash. To go out and have a crash the first race is disappointing."

Tankersley battled power steering problems throughout the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour event on Saturday at the half-mile oval.

"We put a new steering gear in it and a new pump and all new lines throughout the night," he said. "We were fighting that all night."

He advanced from seventh to fifth place in a heat race and from fifth to fourth place in a qualifier. That ranked Tankersley 15th in overall points, which locked him into the main event starting on the inside of the eighth row.

"The car was pretty fast right out of the box," he said. "We had a restart and the track was really fast around the top. I got up there trying to get around some guys and got over the cushion. I got a little sideways and from there it hooked. It did a couple of flips down the front straightaway."

Tankersley was running 11th when the incident occurred exiting turn four late in the race. He was unable to restart the race and was credited with a 20th-place result.

Tankersley will return to competition this Friday at Cotton Bowl Speedway in Paige, Texas, and Saturday at Bronco Raceway Park in Cleveland, Texas, with the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour. The event is also co-sanctioned with the ASCS Gulf South Region.

Tankersley won the ASCS Gulf South Region championship in 2014. Last year he captured seven top-five finishes in 14 ASCS Gulf South Region features and finished the season third in the championship standings.

Hanks Finds Bad Luck during ASCS National Tour Weekend in Texas

Inside Line Promotions - MESQUITE, Texas (March 22, 2016) - Brandon Hanks is pleased with the speed his sprint car showcased last weekend with the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour.

"We had bad luck both nights, but I still walk away from the weekend happy because we were really, really fast," he said. "We had a good car both nights. We're still chopping away at it."

The weekend began last Thursday at Heart O' Texas Speedway in Waco, Texas, where Hanks finished third in a heat race. That locked him into the 14 th starting position for the main event.

"We were battling for 10th when another driver spun right in front of us," he said. "I didn't have anywhere to go and I couldn't miss him. It tore the front end up bad enough I couldn't drive it."

Hanks was running 11th when the crash occurred in turn two approximately halfway through the main event. He was unable to restart the race and was credited with a 20th-place result.

Friday's race at Devil's Bowl Speedway was rained out and the team wrapped up the weekend at the half-mile oval on Saturday.

Hanks advanced from ninth to sixth place in a heat race and from sixth to third place in a qualifier. That put him 10th in overall points and locked into the 10th starting position for the main event.

"We had great speed all night long and we were in position for a good finish about halfway through the race," he said. "Then the bolt came out of a piece on the right front steering. I was going down the backstretch and the right front tire was facing the pits. It broke going into turn one. I thought I had overdrove the corner. I got back on the track and did it again in turns three and four. When I got back on the straightaway it darted to the right and I tapped the wall. That's when I knew something was wrong so I had to pull it in."

Hanks, who was running just outside the top five when the problem occurred, ended with a 17th-place finish.

He is scheduled to compete this Friday at Cotton Bowl Speedway in Paige, Texas, and Saturday at Bronco Raceway Park in Cleveland, Texas, with the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour.

Hanks made his debut at Cotton Bowl Speedway last year and will make his debut at Bronco Raceway Park this weekend.

Rilat Runs into Rough Luck during ASCS National Tour Opening Weekend

Inside Line Promotions - MESQUITE, Texas (March 22, 2016) - Travis Rilat set himself up for another victory last Saturday at Devil's Bowl Speedway.

Unfortunately, luck wasn't on his side at the end of the night during the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour event at the half-mile oval where Rilat hasn't won since 2012.

"Sometimes Lady Luck is on your side and sometimes she's not," he said. "Luck is when preparation and opportunity meet. We got lucky early in the night. We were running second and Joe Wood Jr. blew a motor in our heat race. In our qualifier we were running second and Dustin Gates clipped an infield tire. I'd say we were pretty lucky, but also fast. We consistently had the fastest lap times in the heats and qualifiers."

Rilat capitalized on the early luck and speed to win both his heat race and qualifier after starting on the outside of the second row in each race. That earned him the most overall points and the pole position for the main event.

"With that luck we were able to get the pole," he said. "With a little bad luck we broke a valve spring somewhere between the last couple laps of that qualifier and pushing off for the A Main. To top it off we had a power steering hose rupture a lap and a half in. We were destined to not finish."

Rilat dropped to third on the opening lap and he maintained that position for the opening few laps before he elected to pull off the track early because of the mechanical problems. He was credited with a 23rd-place result.

"On the start it wouldn't take off," he said. "It stumbled. I knew I lost a cylinder essentially so the plan was to pull off early anyway. Then I made a lap and the power steering went. It wasn't meant to be."

Rilat will return to ASCS National Tour competition this Friday at Cotton Bowl Speedway in Paige, Texas, and Saturday at Bronco Raceway Park in Cleveland, Texas.

QUICK RESULTS -

March 19 - Devil's Bowl Speedway in Mesquite, Texas - Heat race: 1 (4); Qualifier: 1 (4); Feature: 23 (1).

SPONSOR SPOTLIGHT - Shark Racing Engines

Located in Sedro-Woolley, Wash., Shark Racing Engines has been building high-performance racing engines for more than two decades. For more information, visit http://www.SharkRacingEngines.com.

"It's kind of funny how I met (Shark owner) Marc Huson when I went up there to Washington for an ASCS National Tour race," Rilat said. "I was wandering around talking on my cell phone and saw a sprint car next door. I walked over, looked around and introduced myself.

"He's been a great friend. He was instrumental with a support group for me and my family when I was in the hospital up there. He and his wife helped us out in a hard time. As far as his engine skills go, he's one of the best in the country. There's only a handful of great engine builders across the country and I consider him one of the best."

Rilat would also like to thank Shop The BOSS, MDS Boring & Drilling, Worfe Chevrolet, Weld Wheels, KSE Racing Products, Schoenfeld Headers, Simpson Race Products, Hoosier Racing Tires, HRP Wings, Goodrich, Penske Racing Shocks and All Star Auto Reconditioning.

Hagar Hungry for $10,000 Prize This Weekend during Park City Cup/Air Capital Shootout

Inside Line Promotions - MARION, Ark. (March 22, 2016) - Derek Hagar is seeking to continue his podium streak this weekend when he makes his debut at 81 Speedway.

"I've never been there, but I saw a picture and it looked pretty slick," he said. "I'm excited to head out there. We've ran with some of those guys who will be there and have won races they've been at so we know we can win. Hopefully we get it done."

The event pays $10,000 to win, which is what put Hagar over the edge on making the eight-hour drive each way to compete.

"There's a lot of money on the line," he said. "Hopefully we can bring that $10,000 home. I think you have to go in with an open mindset. We have to keep the money out of mind and race like we normally do and everything will fall into place."
