Randy Weaver Rolls to SAS Racing Series Victory at Talladega Short Track

By Michael Despain, SAS Public Relations

Eastaboga, AL-October 19, 2013- The Southern All Star Racing Series returned to action after a couple of off weeks with its final visit of 2013 to Talladega Short Track in Eastaboga, AL and tenth place starting Randy Weaver of Crossville, TN would take the checkered flag first and score the $4,000 victory aboard his Outlaw Race Parts/The Bailey Company/Precision 1 Trailer Parts/VP Race Fuels sponsored #116 GRT Race Car powered by a Cornett Race Engine.

The victory by Weaver, the 2012 SAS Racing Series champion, was his second series win at TST in 2013, third series victory overall for 2013, and his 23rd career Southern All Star Racing Series victory.  Weaver’s last SAS win this season came at the B.J. Parker Memorial event at TST back in June.

Tom Maddox of Center, AL would be the overall WhitePerformance.com Top Qualifier and take the lead at the start of the 40 lap, $4,000 to win event, with Michael Page of Douglasville, GA and Ray Cook of Brasstown, NC in hot pursuit.  Page and Cook would battle wheel-to-wheel for second position before Cook secured the spot on lap 4 and began to set his sights on race leader Maddox, as Randy Weaver began to methodically make his way toward the top five.  Maddox and Cook and would race door-to-door for the top spot on lap 12 before Cook took the race lead one circuit later, with Weaver working his way to fifth on the same lap.  The only caution of the event flew on lap 15 when Kyle Beard of Truman, AK slowed to a stop at the top of turn one and being pushed pitside, finished for the night.  The restart would see Cook quickly motor away from the field, while Weaver began to battle with Maddox and Page for second, with Weaver finally grabbing the runner-up slot on lap 18.  At this point, the race was on as Weaver began the process of reeling in Cook for the race lead and pulled in on Cook’s rear bumper as the leader began lapping slower traffic on lap 27.  The pair would battle for the lead before Weaver slid up in front of Cook exiting turn four on lap 29 to execute what would turn out to be the winning pass.  Weaver would pull away from Cook in the final ten laps to secure the victory, with Cook claiming second position.  Brandon Kinzer of Allen, KY would flex his muscle in the final half of the race and drive to a third place effort, with Page hanging on to claim fourth position, while series points leader Riley Hickman of Chattanooga, AL rounded out the top five finishers.

The remainder of the top ten finishers on NASCAR Sprint Cup Weekend at TST would be Maddox, Jason Hiett of Oxford, AL, 14th starting Ronnie Johnson of Chattanooga, TN, Tim Roszell of Coldwater, AL, and Todd Morrow of East Ridge, TN.

The next Southern All Stars Dirt Racing Series event is on Saturday October 26 at Smoky Mountain Speedway in Maryville, TN.  The event is the Tennessee State Champion presented by NAPA and will be 50 laps in distance and pay $10,000 to win and $500 to start.
