Chris Madden Captures SAS Racing Series Big Daddy 500 at Smoky Mountain Speedway

By Michael Despain, SAS Public Relations

Maryville, TN- June 15, 2013- The Southern All Star Racing Series would make its second visit of the season to Smoky Mountain Speedway on Saturday evening and fourth-place starting Chris Madden of Gray Court, SC would pick up the $5,000 payday in the 3rd Annual Big Daddy 500 presented by Tennessee RV Sales and Service aboard the Century Plastics/Hamrick’s of Gaffney/Hoosier Tire South/VP Racing Fuels  sponsored #44 Bloomquist Race Car powered by a Clements Race Engine.

The win by Madden would complete a weekend-sweep of Southern All Star Racing Series action  and marked his 41st career victory with the Southern All Star Racing Series, placing him now second on the series all-time win list.

Vic Hill would take the lead at the start of the 40 lap, $5,000 to win contest and would survive restarts after four early caution flags slowed the action, with Hill able to maintain the lead each time, with Madden, Steve Casebolt, Dale McDowell, and Tommy Kerr giving chase.  McDowell would retire with mechanical issues on lap 13 ending his night and disaster would strike Hill a few laps later when his machine slowed in turn one and he pull to infield area with a hole in his radiator.  This turn of events would put Madden at the point on lap 19 and Madden would hold the spot and build a comfortable lead throughout the later stages of the contest to grab the victory.  Billy Ogle, Jr. of Knoxville, TN would take runner-up honors at the finish in the Blount Excavating Rocket, while Tommy Kerr of Maryville, TN would take the final podium spot and finish third in the Blount Excavating Rocket. Steve Casebolt of Richmond, IN would roll home fourth at the finish in the Hicks and Ingle Contracting MasterSbilt, while Mark Douglas of Knoxville, TN would complete the top five in the Laney and Son Construction Rocket.

The remainder of the top ten in the 3rd Annual Big Daddy 500 presented by Tennessee RV Sales and Service would be Stacy Boles of Clinton, TN, Mark Vineyard of Powell, TN, Chad Ogle of Sevierville, TN, Mike Weeks of Friendsville, TN, and Josh Henry of Newport, TN.

In other action for the evening, Adam Beeler of Knoxville, TN would make a turn two last lap pass of Mack McCarter and survive a tangle with a lapped car entering turn three, resulting in McCarter making heavy contact with the outside retaining wall along with the slower car, to take the $1,000 win in the Crate Late Model feature event.  David Crabtree would end up second in the wild finish, with John Cobb, Greg Martin, and Tom Smith completing the top five.  The $300 to win Street Stock main event would see Jeff McElmore survive a late race charge from Jon Cook to score another victory in the division, winning over Cook, Scott Brown, Mitchell Brown, and Bobby Davis.  The Topless Modifieds would make a guest appearance and Tim Cooper of Friendsville, TN would take the win over Mike Lewis and Kevin Lewis.

It was also announced during intermission that the Southern All Star Racing Series will add another event at Smoky Mountain Speedway on Saturday October 26 in the form of the Treat or Treat 50 presented by NAPA Auto Parts.  The event will be 50 laps in distance and pay $10,000 to the winner.

The next Southern All Stars Dirt Racing Series event is on Saturday June 22 and will take place at Talladega Short Track in Eastaboga, AL and will be the 2nd Annual B.J.
