Southern All Stars Dirt Racing Series; looking back at a busy Money Month of March

By Chris Tilley

HUNTSVILLE, AL (March 31, 2013)—The Southern All Stars Dirt Racing Series just wrapped a huge first month on the 31st anniversary of series competition.

Over $100,000 in prize money went out the door with Randy Weaver of Crossville, TN taking the lions share and collecting $12,850 in just three appearances on the tour thus far. Among the current top-ten drivers in the points, they have collected nearly half the amount already distributed in the first four events. A total of $45,085 has been collected amongst them.

DAVENPORT LIKES NEW RIDE
Blairsville, GA hot shoe Jonathan Davenport sits atop the SAS point standings for the first time and rightfully so after four consecutive top ten finishes, three out of four top five finishes and two wins on top of that. Davenport has collected $11,800 so far in series prize money and collected $9,000 just in first place money while driving for AES Racing and his Barry Wright Race Car. After last season in the Bowyer Dirt Motorsports entry, Davenport is finding early success with the North Carolina based team. Davenport also finished what was a superior month by claiming the $30,000 prize during the Second Annual Carolina Crown, an un-sanctioned show at Lancaster (SC) Speedway on Saturday Night March 30th.

HICKMAN MARCHES THROUGH MARCH
Riley Hickman of Chatanooga, TN hasn't finished outside the top fifteen in four events while collecting three top ten finishes and a 14th place finish. He has collected $2,650 so far on the SAS tour. On March 10th Hickman picked up an Ultimate Series victory at Lavonia, GA giving him a steady month for the defending SRRS-tour champ.

NEW VENUES FOR HIETT
Jason Hiett of Oxford, AL is running the series for the first time after only making visits at his home track of Talladega Short Track in Alabama last season and a lone visit to Cleveland, TN last November. Hiett will see some new tracks as the series ventures to Tazewell, TN and Bulls Gap, TN in the coming weeks. Hiett has already claimed two top ten finishes on the tour and brought in $2,300 in prize money. Hiett currently leads the DirtonDirt.com/Cruise with the Champions Rookie of the Year standings and sits third in series points.

SOLID MARCH FOR WEEKS
It was a very solid Month of March for Friendsville, TN driver and defending series Rookie of the Year Mike Weeks who collected $1,975 this month in series prize money finishing in the top ten the last two races. Weeks finished second to Randy Weaver in the championship battle last season and hopes to continue that success and add a second series championship to his résumé. Weeks picked up the STARS Volunteer Racing Series Championship in 2010.

SUPER RACING FOR ROSNER
Cherokee Speedway on March 3rd was the first time Mark Rosner of Rockford, TN had piloted a Super Late Model and rallied the JT Kerr Racing Equipment/Stinger Race Cars entry to a very respectable 11th place finish. Since then Rosner has solidly finished the other three events and has earned $1,860 and sits second in the Rookie point standings and fifth in Championship points.

HOLMES FOLLOWING IN FATHER’S FOOT STEPS
Bret Holmes is no stranger to dirt tracks, eyeing his father race the well-known #H2 up and down the road while at the same time growing up with aspirations to sit behind the wheel. Now at age 15, the second generation driver is piloting his father’s Barry Wright Race Car and will compete for the Championship and Rookie titles. Holmes has respectable 13th, 12th and 18th place finishes after seeing the cockpit of a full-blown Super Late Model for the first time this season on a traveling circuit.

BUSINESS FOR SAS PICKING UP
For the first time in over five years the tour sees a 27 race schedule which stretches across only five surrounding states, boasting three-$10,000 to win shows for regional status and has six drivers with perfect attendance over those four races which have been ran. The series recently added a pair of $4,000 to win races as part of the 35th Annual Alabama State Championship in late September at East Alabama Motor Speedway in Phenix City, AL marking the first time a sanctioning body will run the event in the event's rich history.

The series heads to Tazewell (TN) Speedway for the first time since 2006 this coming Saturday Night for the Fourth Annual Charles Trammell Memorial paying $5,000 to win / $300 to start the 50-lapper.
