Rodney Sanders on Top of the World at Deer Creek

Happy, Texas (07/28/14) – Rodney Sanders is enjoying a dream season in his #20 Swan Energy/MB Customs/Geddes Racing Engine Open Wheel Modified, and things elevated to a whole new level over the weekend as he claimed the $20,000 top prize in the 4th Annual World Modified Dirt Track Championship (WMDTC).

Rodney Sanders opened the mega event on Thursday evening at Deer Creek Speedway (Spring Valley, Minnesota). A talented field of seventy-five Open Wheel Modifieds registered for the event, and a second place finish in his heat race earned Rodney a spot in the redraw for the 30 lap qualifying feature. After receiving the eighth starting spot for the main event, Sanders progressively worked his way forward to take over the top spot with just six laps remaining in the 30 lapper. Sanders held off Brandon Davis and Terry Phillips in the closing laps for the victory. Davis, Phillips, Zack VanderBeek ,and Jason Hughes rounded out the top five finishers.

After round #1 of the WMDTC Sanders led the overall points, which locked him into third starting spot for Saturday night's $20,000-to-win finale.

When the green flag dropped on Saturday's 100 lapper, Craig Thatcher grabbed the early lead with Brent Larson and Sanders in tow. Larson took the top spot from Thatcher with seven laps complete, but Sanders disposed of Larson three laps later and took control. Larson kept Sanders within striking distance until Brandon Davis claimed the second spot with 30 laps complete. Jason Hughes moved to third on lap 37 before the race's first caution occurred one lap later.

Back under Green Hughes scooted around David and set his sights on Sanders. Sanders and Hughes broke away from the pack over the next 20 laps as Terry Phillips moved into third and slowly closed the gap between himself and the lead duo. With the leaders working lapped traffic, the race's second and final yellow flag waved with fourteen laps to go. Hughes applied pressure to Sanders after the restart, and got underneath him briefly on lap 94, but Sanders soon pulled away and never saw the nose of Hughes' machine again. Sanders rolled into victory lane as the winner of the 4th Annual World Modified Dirt Track Championship, increasing his USMTS win streak to eight. The triumph marked his twenty-third overall of the 2014 season.

“It’s been an amazing season, and it’s a dream come true to win this race,” said Sanders. “We’ve had a great year already, but now our focus is definitely on winning another USMTS Championship, and that pursuit starts this week.”

Rodney now turns his attention to the 2014 Hunt for the USMTS Casey’s National Championship. Action opens on Friday night at Batesville Motor Speedway (Locust Grove, Arkansas) before moving to Springfield Raceway (Springfield, Missouri) on Saturday and Monett Speedway (Monett, Missouri).
