Rodney Sanders Wins Rapid Speedway Thriller; Busy Week Ahead

Happy, Texas (06/11/13) - Rodney Sanders piloted his #20 Swan Energy/Kimrad Transport/MB Customs/Geddes Racing Engine Open Wheel Modified to the $4,000 win with the United States Modified Touring Series (USMTS) on Friday evening at Rapid Speedway (Rock Rapids, Iowa).

Twenty-seven competitors registered for action, and Rodney won his heat race from the second starting spot to lock into the redraw for the feature. In the redraw he was the recipient of the second starting position for the finale alongside pole sitter, Dereck Ramirez. As the race went green he quickly worked his way to the lead, but on lap 5 Zack VanderBeek drove by for the top spot. VanderBeek held down the lead until a lap 12 restart, when he jumped the cushion in turn two. Sanders inherited the lead and never looked back on his way to the victory, which came over Ryan Gustin, Jon Tesch, Joey Jensen, and Lucas Schott.

“At the first of the race I was kind of searching for where I needed to be, and then VanderBeek blew by me on the top,” Sanders said. “It was pretty rough out there and really hard to pass. He showed me the line before he slipped off the track there and we were able to get by and hang on to it.”

Saturday night's scheduled program at Upper Iowa Speedway (Decorah, Iowa) fell victim to rain.
