Rodney Sanders Thaws Competition in Winter Meltdown Opener

Happy, Texas (03/11/15) – Rodney Sanders took his #20 Swan Energy/MB Customs Open Wheel Modified into battle at Southern New Mexico Speedway (Las Cruces, New Mexico) over the weekend with the United States Modified Touring Series (USMTS), where he came away with his fifth win of 2015.

The defending USMTS National Champion found the reconfigured surface to his liking Friday night, and drove away from the field to capture the opening round of the 21st Annual Winter Meltdown.

A stout field of forty-five Open Wheel Modifieds converged on the oval, all chasing the $2,000 top prize. Sanders charged forward from ninth to finish third in his heat race, sending him to the redraw where he received the second starting spot alongside Casey Arneson on the front-row for the 30-lap feature.
Arneson led lap 1 before Sanders assumed the point, and drove out to a commanding lead over the rest of the field. Sanders was motoring through the final turns on his way to the checkered flag when the caution came out, erasing a huge advantage for the Happy, Texas, ace and setting up a green-white-checkered finish.

Sanders got a smooth restart, fended off an attempt peek underneath in the first corner, and then sailed away to his fifth victory of the season. Dillard finished 0.813 seconds behind in second, followed by Terry Phillips, Dereck Ramirez, and Jason Hughes.

Saturday night's program boosted a $3,000 top prize, which drew fifty entries. Heavy and rough track conditions greeted competitors, and after being involved in a melee in his heat race Sanders failed to qualify for the 40-lap main event, sending him to a b-main. Unfortunately, Rodney was unable to reach a transfer position in the b-main, ending his night early.

The weekend drew to a close on Sunday afternoon with a $4,000-to-win race. Forty-five entries registered for battle, and mechanical issues during his heat race put Sanders behind the 8-ball for much of the night. He failed to reach a transfer position into the 50-lap finale however, a track provisional would earn him the 27th starting spot on the grid. Rodney retired early to a disappointing 26th place finish in the final rundown.

“Saturday and Sunday definitely weren’t too much fun, but Friday night we had a good car, so we’ll take that win and head to the next event,” said Sanders.

With heavy rain throughout the state of Texas preempting the upcoming weekend’s scheduled USMTS slate, Sanders is still unsure of his plans. Keep your browsers locked to www.RodneySandersRacing.net for the latest team news.
