At A Glance: Joey Saldana Leads His Roth Team Back Home

The Series takes on Thunderbowl Raceway in Tulare, California on March 11 and 12

CONCORD, N.C. - March 10, 2016 - With one World of Outlaws Craftsman® Sprint Car Series win on the season and a second place position in the championship standings, Joey Saldana has started the season off right with his new team, Roth Motorsports. As the series heads to Thunderbowl Raceway in Tulare, Calif. on Friday and Saturday, the team looks for a second win - this time, on home turf.

With four wins over the years at the third-mile oval, Saldana hopes to add another to the record books for his Fresno-based team.

"I'm definitely looking forward to going to Tulare, just down the road from the Roth shop," Saldana said. "Definitely a lot of Roth people will be there and (team owners Dennis and Teresa Roth) will be there, so looking forward for that. And we've had some success driving for other teams at Tulare and we'll take that momentum and get a good result with this car."

At Tulare, the Roth team has found that success in recent years. Tim Kaeding battled Terry McCarl last season to score a win for the No. 83JR Roth team.

Saldana said for his team owners, the desire to win burns strong and is backed up by a commitment to supply the best equipment and support.

"Obviously to win a World of Outlaws race anywhere is a great accomplishment," Saldana said. "And I think Dennis and Teresa both appreciate the fact when you put the effort in and win a race. Having them there and witnessing what you just accomplished is pretty special for the team. Definitely keeps everybody happy and elevated and wanting to achieve more."

Since the start of the season, Saldana has one win, three podium finishes, four top-fives and has finished outside the top ten just one time. The record is a good one considering Saldana is working with newly minted crew chief Eric Prutzman - a veteran of Donny Schatz's No. 15 team. While the team still has progress to make, Saldana said the pieces are there and the communication between he and Prutzman, whom he had never worked with, is coming together.

"That itself is encouraging knowing you're close," Saldana said. "We're just off a little bit and we really don't know each other and what we've done together in the first seven races. We're definitely learning fast - it's easy to learn fast when you're provided equipment that's competitive. Right off the bat Dennis (Roth) has provided us the car, the motor, the truck, the trailer - everything that we need to be competitive. We just need to take all of those resources and make it happen. It's coming along really well for us."

Unlike the competition, Saldana and Roth are in the unique position of having both Fresno and Brownsburg, Ind. as a home base. Saldana said it helps the team stay energized and close to home throughout the most grueling stretch of the season in June, July and August. It is also helpful for them to have a base during the month-long California swing.

Now in the midst of his 21st season with the Outlaws and closing in on 100 wins, Saldana said he has learned that having fun is the key to staying focused and maintaining momentum.

"I'm looking forward to every night I get to drive this racecar," Saldana said. "That's one thing as a driver - you have to have confidence and want to be at the race track. Right now, everything is in place for us to be successful at the race track."

Tickets for the World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series at Thunderbowl Raceway on Friday, March 11 and Saturday March 12 are available by visiting TulareThunderbowl.com or by calling (559) 688-0909.

Clauson Circulates into Another Pair of Wins on Busy Weekend

Lonnie Wheatley, QUEEN CREEK, Ariz. (March 10, 2016) – A busy five-race weekend over the course of four days netted Bryan Clauson another pair of feature wins in Nevada and California as the “Circular Insanity Tour” race count climbed to 27.

In the pursuit of 200 races in 2016, Clauson picked off his sixth win of the year in USAC Southwest vs. USAC West Coast action at The Dirt Track at Las Vegas on Friday night before running the win total to seven with a USAC/CRA Sokola Shootout score on Saturday at Perris Auto Speedway.  Both triumphs came aboard Mike Martin’s Cancer Treatment Centers of America/Jonathan Byrd’s Restaurant and Hospitality Group No. 16b.

Mix in three nights of strong World of Outlaws competition in the Cancer Treatment Centers of America/Elk Grove Ford No. 17w Sprint Car and it was a fast-paced weekend to be sure.

“It was a pretty good week, that was our first really busy week of the year,” Clauson commented.  “There will be quite a few more like that as we get deeper into the season.”

Now, after several days to catch his breath, it’s back at it with double duty scheduled on both Friday and Saturday with World of Outlaws and USAC West Coast Sprint Car action at Tulare, California’s Thunderbowl Raceway.

Race 23

Last weekend’s flurry of activity began with World of Outlaws action at The Dirt Track at Las Vegas on Thursday night with Clauson finishing the night in 19th.

“It wasn’t the best start.  We started 12th, but I didn’t get down soon enough on the start.  I kept trying stuff and didn’t stay patient on the bottom.  We got back up to 14th but then contact with another car knocked us back.  I maybe should have been more patient, but we really had nothing to lose so I just kept trying different things.”

Race 24

A Friday double-dip at The Dirt Track at Las Vegas began with the USAC West Coast vs. USAC Southwest “Sin City Showdown”.  After winning his heat race, Clauson led 20 of the opening 23 rounds before rallying from third to first on the final lap to score a spectacular win.

“We were in good position, but had some trouble in traffic.  Taking the white flag in third and winning it makes it a spectacular finish.  I was just fortunate to make a couple of good corners to steal one back.  I got a good run and ripped the top around Brady (Bacon) to win it.”

Race 25

Friday at Vegas finished off with a strong ninth place run in World of Outlaws action. It was Clauson’s third top-ten of the year in WoO competition.

“We raced into the Dash and started eighth.  We faded early but then got going, we were back up to seventh at one point.  I was really good on the cushion, with nothing to lose I tried a couple of things that cost us a couple of spots.  Still, any top ten with the World of Outlaws is good, you know you’re going the right direction.”

Race 26

With two Vegas nights in the books, the weekend continued after a quick 250 mile jaunt to California’s Perris Auto Speedway for Saturday’s USAC/CRA Sokola Shootout.  A winner of the Oval Nationals his last time there, Clauson captured his second consecutive PAS win by leading the final 18 laps atop the half-mile clay oval.

“We had a really good car, we took some of the things that we learned last fall and applied it and it really worked well.  We were able to able to use parts of the track that nobody else could and just set sail from there.”

Race 27

The five-race set wrapped up 350 miles to the east with the World of Outlaws first stop at Queen Creek’s Arizona Speedway near Phoenix.  Never finding a comfort zone, Clauson still pulled off a 13th place finish.

“It was an up and down night, I never really got comfortable as a driver with what I needed to do.  We started 12th and finished 13th, we really just kinda rode.  We needed the car to be a little better to maneuver.  Sometimes you just don’t figure out new places right away, this was one we just soldiered through and did the best we could.”

Now, 13.5% into the “Circular Insanity Tour” Clauson looks to add four more races this weekend at Thunderbowl Raceway where he raced into both World of Outlaws feature events in his first visit to the track in 2014.

2016 Circular Insanity Tour Quick Stats:  27 races, 7 wins, 14 top-fives, 20 top-tens.

Up Next:

Saturday – World of Outlaws at Tulare, California’s Thunderbowl Raceway (Cancer Treatment Centers of America/Elk Grove Ford No. 17w Sprint Car) and USAC Southwest vs. USAC West Coast (Mike Martin’s Cancer Treatment Centers of America/Jonathan Byrd’s Restaurant and Hospitality Group No. 16b non-wing Sprint Car)

Las Vegas a Learning Experience for Reutzel

Lonnie Wheatley, CLUTE, Texas (March 10, 2016) – Aaron Reutzel got his first taste of The Dirt Track at Las Vegas last weekend with two nights of World of Outlaws competition as well as a round of non-wing USAC Sprint Car action.

It was a weekend of learning aboard Shane Liebig’s No. 55 Triple-X Sprint Car that culminated with a 14th place finish in Friday’s Las Vegas finale while a broken wheel center dug too much of a hole in the No. 0 wingless Sprinter fielded by Glenn Styres and Jack Yeley.

“Vegas was good, we’re still getting used to everything,” Reutzel commented of the weekend in the Liebig No. 55.  “We made a lot of progress out there, made a lot of gains.  I’m looking forward to racing with him more this year.”

Reutzel and Liebig will team up next at the Badlands Motor Speedway’s season-opening $100,000 Silver Shootout on May 21.

The Las Vegas double began on Thursday night with Reutzel racing his way into the main event from the “B” Main.  “We had a good car in the B,” Reutzel said.  “In the feature, I caught an infield tire and that messed the car up.  It was pretty much one-lane on the bottom and we weren’t going anywhere so I just pulled off to save the car for another night.”

Friday’s qualifying effort was foiled by an attempt to save weight with a light fuel load.  It proved to be too little.  “It started spitting in qualifying, we weren’t completely up to speed.”

Reutzel rebounded by racing through his heat race into the feature, where he started 14th.

“The feature was going really good, we were good on the long runs and up to about tenth,” Reutzel explains.  “The caution killed us, the tire sealed up and we just couldn’t get going again after that.”

Reutzel avoided non-wing disaster when a right rear wheel center broke in heat race action.  While Reutzel saved the machine, he was relegated to the tail of the “B” Main.  And when they saturated the topside of the speedway, it made for tough going.

“We just had to run the bottom with everyone else and still made our way up to fourth, but they only took three,” Reutzel comments.  “There was just no top to work, it was just slime up there.”

Now, chomping at the bit to kick off his Lucas Oil ASCS National championship defense aboard the familiar Shark-powered Dissolvealloy Frac Ball Revolution /BC Fundz No. 87 Triple-X Sprint Car, Reutzel will have to wait another week with Mother Nature washing out this weekend’s scheduled opener at Creek County Speedway near Tulsa, OK.

And with the weekend’s other options of Short Track Nationals at Little Rock’s I-30 Speedway and an ASCS Gulf South double in southeast Texas washed out as well, it makes for an unscheduled idle weekend for Reutzel and crew before firing back into action next Thursday at Waco’s Heart O’ Texas Speedway.

Up Next: ASCS National Tour season opener at Waco’s Heart O’ Texas Speedway on Thursday, March 17, followed by the Devi’s Bowl Speedway Spring Nationals in Mesquite, TX, on Friday and Saturday, March 18-19.
