Victory At West Virginia Motor Speedway Highlights Solid Labor Day Weekend For Josh Richards

SHINNSTON, W. Va. (September 4, 2013) - Josh Richards pocketed over $10,000 in the World of Outlaws Late Model Series RaceFest 50 at West Virginia Motor Speedway in Mineral Wells over the Labor Day weekend, extending his WoO LMS points lead even further as he closes in on a third career title. In addition to the win, he earned three more top-five finishes over the course of the holiday weekend.

After tuning up for WVMS's first WoO LMS show since 2010 with a strong second-place finish in last Thursday night's 30-lap ADRA Super Late Model feature, Richards proved to be the class of the field on Friday night. He set fast time (his series-leading sixth such honor of 2013), won a heat race and dominated the 50-lap A-Main after passing for the lead amid lapped traffic on lap 14.

The victory was Richards's eighth of 2013 and the 47th of his career on the WoO LMS. It was also his second victory this season in his home state.

"It's awesome to win again in West Virginia, especially at a track I've been coming to since I was a kid," said Richards, whose first triumph in his home state came on May 25 in a WoO LMS event at Tyler County Speedway in Middlebourne. "It feels good that we've been able to run good on the smaller track every time we've (entered a race) this year."

Regaining his checkered-flag touch on the WoO LMS also put a smile on Richards's face at WVMS.

"It feels like it's been forever since we've been in victory lane," said Richards, whose eighth WoO LMS win of 2013 was his first since July 11 at Red River Co-op Speedway in Winnipeg, Manitoba. "We've had some really good runs (over the past month-and-a-half), but we've just been lacking a little bit and we had a few races where we had stuff just not go our way. It definitely went our way (on Friday)."

After a six-hour overnight haul from WVMS to central Pennsylvania, Richards was steady during his weekend visit to Selinsgrove Speedway. He finished fourth in both ends of the half-mile oval's inaugural WoO LMS doubleheader - the 40-lap Showdown On Sand Hill on Saturday night and the 50-lap National Open on Sunday evening - to give him a series-leading 28 top-five finishes in 41 A-Mains this season.

The trio of WoO LMS top-five finishes pushed Richards's points lead to 96 points over his nearest competitor with just seven events remaining on the tour's 2013 schedule. If he averages a seventh-place finish over the final seven races, he cannot be overtaken for the championship.

Richards and his Valvoline-sponsored Mark Richards Racing Enterprises Rocket Chassis team capped their weekend on Labor Day Monday with a stop at Roaring Knob Motorsports Complex for the National Dirt Racing League's Let's Get Dirty 75. Shooting for his second $20,000 NDRL victory in three starts this season on the fledgling mini-series, he rallied from a lap-58 pit stop for a flat tire to finish third.

Richards will be back in action this weekend at Eldora Speedway in Rossburg, Ohio, where he will gun for his first career victory in dirt Late Model racing's most prestigious event, the $46,000-to-win World 100. The weekend includes twin 25-lap preliminary features paying $5,000-to-win each on Thursday, September 5, and Friday, September 6 (the field is split after time trials on Thursday and Friday) and the traditional World 100 program on Saturday, September 7.

Jason Hughes Wins Twice; Narrows Hunt Gap

Westville, Oklahoma (09/04/13) – Jason Hughes bagged a pair of wins over the weekend in his #12 West Siloam Pawn/Hughes Race Car/Mullins Racing Engine Open Wheel Modified and narrowed Johnny Scott's advantage in the Hunt for the Casey's Cup to just seven markers.

Jason Hughes pursued the Hunt for the Casey's Cup into Cedar County Speedway (Tipton, Iowa) on Thursday night, where 29 entries registered for action. Heat race difficulties left Hughes starting deep in the b-main. He enjoyed a great run in the b-main as he screamed from the 8th starting spot to claim the win, which locked him into the 13th starting spot for the $5,000-to-win feature. Jason wouldn't be finished passing cars in the feature either as he raced through the field to register a 2nd place finish behind race winner, Ryan Gustin.

Friday evening was not the best of outings for Jason as he followed the Hunt for the Casey's Cup to Chateau Raceway (Lansing, Minnesota). Hughes earned the 9th starting spot for the feature via preliminary action, but the main event would be filled with road blocks for the Oklahoma driver. A series of flat tires including one on the final lap of the event, which resulted in a big pile-up relegated Jason to a disappointing 18th place finish.

Jason looked to bounce back from Friday night's bad luck on Saturday night with a trip at Deer Creek Speedway (Spring Valley, Minnesota), and he would accomplish just that by topping the night's action to claim a $5,300 payday! Forty-three entries filled the pit area, and an 8th to 3rd run in his heat race locked Hughes into the redraw for the feature, where he was the recipient of the 4th starting spot. As the race went green Jason began working his way forward, and on lap 9 he overtook leader, Joey Jensen for the lead. Once out front Hughes cruised to his ninth win of the season and 120th of his career with the USMTS. Craig Thatcher, Jason Krohn, Jeremy Payne, and Stormy Scott rounded out the top five finishers in the final rundown. With the win Hughes Race Cars also clinched yet another Tiger Rear Ends Manufacturers Championship. The title marked the fourth straight year that Hughes Race Cars has topped the competition.

The insanely busy weekend drew to a close with a bang for Hughes on Sunday evening at Cresco Speedway (Cresco, Iowa) as Hughes won his second race in as many nights as he pocketed the $3,000 top prize. Preliminary action found Hughes advancing to the redraw for the feature, where he drew the pole for the finale. Jason jumped to the lead at the start of the 40 lap finale, and held the top spot until lap 9, when Ryan Gustin drove past for the lead. Hughes stalked Gustin until lap 19, when he shot back to the lead. Back at the point Hughes kept his pursuers at bay for the remainder of the finale on his way to his tenth win of 2013! Gustin, Rodney Sanders, Johnny Scott, and Jason Krohn rounded out the top five finishers.

Jason is now second in the latest Hunt for the Casey's Cup standings just seven points out of the lead with one event remaining. Full results from the events as well as the latest standings are available at www.USMTS.com .

Jason Hughes will next return to action September 19th-21st during the 15th Annual Featherlite Fall Jamboree. During the opening round of the event on Thursday evening he will enter the final Hunt event of the season as he looks to claim his second career title. Friday and Saturday will see Hughes chasing a pair of big pay days in the coveted event. For more information on the races please visit www.USMTS.com .
