Rodney Sanders Surges to Seventh Win of 2014

Happy, Texas (04/16/14) – Rodney continued his dominate streak in 2014 with the United States Modified Touring Series (USMTS) as he made a late-race surge in his #20 Swan Energy/MB Customs/Geddes Racing Engine Open Wheel Modified to score the $2,000 victory on Friday night at Lakeside Speedway (Kansas City, Kansas).

A talented field of 32 Open Wheel Modifieds converged on the 3/8 mile, semi-banked oval. Rodney started his night off with an eighth to fourth run in the heat race, locking him into the eleventh starting spot for the $2,000-to-win finale. Sanders charged from his sixth row starting spot to second with 26 laps complete of the 30 lap event complete. Early leader, Stormy Scott, had built a comfortable lead over the field before the caution waved on lap 26, stacking the field up for a shootout to the end. On the restart, Rodney motored by Scott on the outside and held on through one more caution period to score the victory over Scott, Zack VanderBeek, Dereck Ramirez, and Jake Gallardo.

Saturday found Sanders competing at the Salina Highbanks Speedway (Pryor Creek, Oklahoma) in another $2,000-to-win event that drew a field of thirty-five entries to the oval. After finishing second in his heat race, Rodney locked into the tenth starting spot for the 30 lap finale. During the course of the feature Sanders advanced to a solid eighth place finish in the final rundown.

TOP 10 FINISH FOR SALDANA IN EL PASO

El Paso, Texas (April 15, 2014) – A capacity crowd squeezed into the grandstands at El Paso Speedway Park to watch the second ever appearance of the World of Outlaws Sprint Car drivers and the greatest show on dirt.

In qualifying, Joey Saldana drove the Motter Equipment HE&M Saw Beltline Body Shop 71M to the fifth quickest lap around the semi-banked 3/8-mile oval, clocking 13.467 seconds.

The Brownsburg Bullet lined up third for the start of the second heat race. Outlaws officials called back the first start and on the restart, Saldana was fourth when the green flew. The Saldana-Pittman on-track battle from the feature in Perris continued in the El Paso heat race as the two drivers went wheel to wheel, side by side, trying slide jobs and every tactic in the sprint car playbook to one up the other. It was arguably one of the best dogfights of the night.  At the checkered flag, it was Steve Kinser with the heat win, Saldana fourth and Pittman fifth.  The top six finishers in the heat solidified starting positions in the A-Main.

Saldana was scheduled to line up eighth for the start of the A-Main. When Logan Schuchart took his car to the pits during preliminary laps, Saldana moved to the sixth position on the grid. At the green, Kerry Madsen took the lead with Jason Sides second and Saldana seventh. The Bullet was having a tough time guarding his position.

The first yellow came out on lap 13 when Jason Sides looped the car in turn one.  On the restart, Saldana was seventh in the line-up but McMahan, next to him on the outside of the row, got by to gain a position. There was one more yellow and at the end of the night, Saldana rolled across the finish line ninth.

Kerry Madsen celebrated the win on his wedding anniversary, Steve Kinser was second and Daryn Pittman was third.

“Every team has an off night,” said team owner Dan Motter.  “If our off night is still a top 10, we can live with this. We will regroup and get ready for The Devils Bowl this weekend.”

Reutzel Lands First ASCS National Win; Eyes Third Consecutive Wren Classic Score!

Lonnie Wheatley, CLUTE, Texas (April 15, 2014) – “It couldn’t have been a better night, we’ve been trying to get that one for a long time,” Aaron Reutzel exclaimed after bagging his first career ASCS National Tour feature win at Little Rock’s I-30 Speedway on Saturday.

Reutzel had good reason to be excited about the Stafford Performance-powered Bob and Christie Miller’s Car Parts Machine/Wren’s Motorsports No. 87 Triple-X machine wrenched by crew member Ryan Beechler after Saturday night’s triumph over a stellar 43 car field.

“We knew going in that this was probably one of our best opportunities to win, the STN last year showed we’ve really got our car rolling good around that track,” Reutzel explained.  “We unloaded fast.  It was one of those things that was just meant to be, everything went just right.”

Reutzel and crew carry that momentum into this weekend’s ASCS Gulf South double at Heart O’ Texas Speedway and then the Gator Motorplex, where he is the two-time and defending winner of the Nolan Wren Classic.

At I-30 Speedway this past weekend, Reutzel’s evening began in familiar fashion with a big draw number.  Unphased, Reutzel raced forward from ninth to fourth to put the Momentum Racing Suspensions/Danny Sander Construction/ButlerBuilt machine in the redraw.

Reutzel redrew the pole position for the 30-lap feature.  The opportunity was there.

“We watched the B’s, the guys up top were decent but the bottom looked a lot better,” Reutzel explains.  “We set up to put the right rear where it would never see the moisture, I wasn’t going to get off the bottom unless I could hear someone or traffic forced us.”

Reutzel jumped into the lead and narrowly avoided the first caution just as he approached the tail of the field.  “The guy’s car went one way and the wheel went the other, we split it.  Leading and trying to get that first win, you think everything is out to get you,” Reutzel laughs.

The tension thickened as the laps clicked off and Reutzel was ever closer to parking the Lone Star Hydro Maintenance/BC Fundz/Wright Way Logistics machine in victory lane.

“We ran down traffic again, we kept slowing down more and more it seemed like,” Reutzel explains of the closing laps.  “I could hear a motor, someone running the middle, I started getting nervous and just barely clipped one of the tires exiting two.  I told myself, ‘Don’t start that!’.”

Closing in to lap Seth Bergman in the final handful of laps, Reutzel put the No. 23 car to good use.  “He was running up top and we would meet on the straightaway.  I could hear someone back there still so I tried to slide up next to him on the straights (Bergman) to block the track.”

The white flag flies and the Clute, TX, driver is just one-quarter mile from that breakthrough victory.

“Now I’m really nervous.  I’m thinking someone is gonna dive bomb me for the lead so I go in really hard and just smoke a couple of infield tires getting into one, I thought for sure the front end would go down.”

But the front end stays up through turns one and two and Reutzel powers down the backstretch.

“That last lap was the longest lap of my life, I was just waiting for the front end to collapse getting into three,” Reutzel exclaimed.

But it doesn’t and Reutzel negotiates the final pair of corners without incident to finally nab that first career ASCS National win after accumulating ten previous ASCS Gulf South wins.

“Thank goodness we had a Triple-X left front radius rod, it held up.  It bent the axle and the tie rod, but we hung on.”

Relief is just one of the many emotions that run through a guy’s head after a monumental win like Reutzel’s at I-30 Speedway on Saturday night.  “You start to wonder if it will happen.  You come so close so many times, you start to wonder if it’s meant to be,” Reutzel explains.

“That was one of our goals for the year, to get that first National win,” Reutzel comments.  “The further you go into the season, the more anxious you get about it and start to wonder.  We got that one out of the way so maybe they’ll start coming easier now.”

“That’s the confidence booster we needed, especially before we head out to Oregon next month.  Now if we can just be consistent and get good finishes we can reach our other goal for this year of finishing top five in points.”

Reutzel is well on his way to that other goal as well, climbing to tenth in a tightly-bunched points race.

Reutzel points out that, “We had a horrible points start having to use a promoter’s provisional the opening weekend, and now we’re just 62 points out of the lead.  String together some top fives and we’re right there.”

And for Reutzel, the first win couldn’t have come at a better place than I-30 Speedway.  “I love that place, from Micros to Sprint Cars it’s always been a fun place to race at.”

Reutzel and crew have little time to enjoy the spoils of victory as Gulf Coast Ford comes on board for this weekend’s ASCS Gulf South events at Waco’s Heart O’ Texas Speedway on Friday and then the Nolan Wren Classic at the Gator Motorplex in Willis, TX, on Saturday.

Reutzel’s second career Gulf South win came at Heart O’ Texas early in 2011 with two more wins in the initial two editions of the Nolan Wren Classic at the Gator Motorplex in 2012 and then last April.  “Both places are racy, one of my wins at Willis was on the top and the other was on the bottom, they usually have a good track when the Gulf South is there.”

Reutzel says of the Nolan Wren Classic, “That’s always a big race for us, we’ve known the family a long time and were good friends with Nolan so it’s always means a lot to us to do well at that one.”

Reutzel beat Christopher Bell and Jason Johnson to the line in last year’s Nolan Wren Classic.  And Reutzel would love nothing more than to be standing in victory lane for the second consecutive Saturday night this weekend as a three-time Nolan Wren Classic champion.

2014 Quick Stats:  15 races, 1 win, 6 top-fives, 10 top-tens, 1 heat race win, 2 “B” Main wins.

Up Next: ASCS Gulf South this weekend including Waco’s Heart O’ Texas Speedway on Friday and then the Third Annual Nolan Wren Classic at the Gator Motorplex in Willis, TX, on Saturday.

Kent Robinson Has Strong Weekend Outing with NDRL Tour

Bloomington, Indiana (03/16/14) – Kent Robinson took his #7r JB's Salvage/Club 29/Jay Dickens Racing Engine Super Late Model into battle over the weekend in a trio of events with the National Dirt Racing League (NDRL) and came away with two top-five-finishes and almost a win to show for his efforts.

Action began with a $10,000-to-win program on Thursday night at Pittsburgh's Pennsylvania Motor Speedway (Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania) as the PENNational 50 was contested. Forty-one entries were on hand Thursday night, and Kent starting his outing with a second place finish in the heat race, sending him to the redraw for the main event. After drawing the seventh starting spot for the feature, Robinson passed three other competitors over the course of the event to register a solid fourth place finish behind race winner Steve Francis, Brian Birkhofer, and Jonathan Davenport.

Action shifted to Virginia Motor Speedway (Jamaica, Virginia) on Saturday night to the King of the Commonwealth that posted a $20,000 top prize. Thirty-six Super Late Model filled the pit area, and after failing to transfer into the main event via heat race and b-main action, Kent used a Series Provisional to gain the 23rd starting spot on the grid for the 60 lap finale. Despite starting deep in the field, Robinson advanced ten spots to a thirteenth place finish at the checkered flag.

The weekend drew to a close on Sunday evening as the tour returned to Winchester Speedway (Winchester, Virginia) for a $10,000-to-win program that had been postponed from Friday night due to inclement weather. Thirty-eight Super Late Models registered for the event as Robinson drew the outside pole position, alongside Hall-of-Famer Scott Bloomquist, for the main event. When the feature went green, K-Rob bolted to the race lead and set the pace out front. However, Bloomquist would take over the top spot on lap 39 of the 50 lap affair and lead the remaining laps for the win. Robinson finished second followed by Jonathan Davenport, Billy Moyer, and John Blankenship.

"It was a great weekend, but it would've been even better if I had been able to get the win at Winchester," said Robinson. "Scott (Bloomquist) was just a little better than us at the end, but it was still a really good run for our team."

Kent finds himself currently leading the rookie of the year battle with the NDRL and is fourth in the overall standings. Complete results from the event as well as the latest standings are available at www.TheNDRL.com .

This weekend the team will travel south to Magnolia Motor Speedway (Columbus, Mississippi) to compete in the inaugural King of Mississippi. The state-of-the-art, 3/8 mile oval will see an open practice session scheduled on Thursday night. Friday night's program will be highlighted by a $7,500-to-win feature, and on Saturday evening a $12,500-to-win event will be held. For more information on the event please visit www.TheNDRL.com .

Shark Racing's Allen Remembers the Past
And Points Toward the Future with His Two WoO Rookies

HANOVER, Pa., April 16 — A great deal has changed and a great deal hasn't changed since 1978 when the first World of Outlaws sprint car show ever was staged at Devil's Bowl Speedway in Mesquite, Texas. Bobby Allen of Hanover, Pa., finished third in the series' points that inaugural year, and he'll be on hand at Devil's Bowl for a two-night show this Friday and Saturday to field two Shark Racing sprint cars for Logan Schuchart (#1s) and Jacob Allen (#1a).

Schuchart, Bobby's grandson, and Jacob Allen, Bobby's son, are both rookies in the World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series this year, contending for the Kevin Gobrecht Rookie of the Year Award presented by ButlerBuilt. In February the trio left their home base in Hanover, Pa. to embark on a challenging, 10-month schedule of 93 different WoO races at 53 tracks in 24 states and three Canadian provinces.

Bobby Allen, who turned 70 in December, noted that the whole sport has gotten much more professional since Ted Johnson organized the top outlaw (unsanctioned) drivers into a series. Allen said that in the seventies as the drivers traveled from track to track in search of the biggest purses offered that particular weekend, there was a lot more camaraderie among the competitors than what he notices now.

"Before, it was like one big family; it was a band of guys traveling around and having fun along the way," he said. "Today the drivers talk to each other at the track, but they don't seem to hang out with each other much otherwise like we did. It's all more like big business; it's just different."

Allen said some of the drivers would travel together in a convoy, and now and then they'd have cookouts in the tracks' parking lots. After the races they'd lift a beer or two at a local bar or their motel's lounge, and they'd play cards together if a race was rained out.

"It wasn't really poker, but we gambled," he said.  "We'd put $5 at a time in the pot, and a couple of times it got over $100."

He added that the wives and girlfriends following the circuit would usually go shopping during a rainout, and he was sometimes left with the kids.

"That's when they got me, because they'd say they'd be back by 3 and it was really more like 6," he added with a smile.

It wasn't just his own kids he was babysitting, either.

"Kinser's kids were the worst; they'd run in different directions and I couldn't catch them," he said.  "And yes, that includes Kraig," he added, speaking of current WoO driver Kraig Kinser.

"I did small magic tricks for the kids, so I was a pretty popular babysitter," he added. "Just simple things; nothing fancy, but they liked it."

Along with his skills as a driver — he won the 1990 Knoxville Nationals in a career that numbers over 276 sprint car feature victories and put him in the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame — Allen's work as a designer and fabricator are also legendary. His rookies will drive the only Shark chassis in the field at Devil's Bowl.

"Today everything is bought; there are manufacturers for the cars and all the parts; nothing is built out of the garage anymore," he noted.  "It's gotten more business-like down the line.  I'm a little the other way though," he added with a smile.

More borrowing went on too.

"Back when I was driving, people would come to my shop and I'd give them old tires or little things that I had that they might need, and they'd do the same for me," he remembered. "Jimmy Boyd just mentioned a front axle I gave him years ago. Now that I'm back on the road, people are coming up to me and reminding me of things I gave them at one time or another."

It wasn't called paying it forward at the time but those kindnesses are coming back to him now, and he mentioned how thankful he is for help from people like engine builders Don Ott and Charlie Garrett today.

Although sprint car racing is more business-like today, Allen said one thing that hasn't changed much in 36 years is the cars themselves.  "They're basically the same, but the motors and the tires have changed a lot," he said.  "The motors generate more horsepower and stay together longer, and the tires have gotten better too. With every tire company that's been involved in sprint car racing, we've learned something. Nowadays what's big as far as the engines go is the fuel set-ups. We've learned a lot about shocks too; that's really important.

"The technology has gotten much better," he summarized. "But everything costs more and more big business is involved than there was in the past."

To that end, Shark Racing is actively looking for additional sponsors to join its list of supporters, which includes businesses and individuals such as Your Auto Source NAPA Autocare Center, Pell's Tire Service, Marty Thompson, Don Ott Racing Engines, Rich Fogle Custom Pole Buildings, Newman's Towing & Recovery, CnB Mushroom Farms, Brenneman Painting, Speedway 94, Dirt: The Game, Silpada Jewelry, Lebo Skin Care, DMI, Penske Shocks, ButlerBuilt Seats, Tony Stewart Racing and SR Lubricant Solutions.

With this weekend's show, called the Texas Outlaw Nationals presented by American Racing Custom Wheels, the World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series is making its first appearance at Devil's Bowl in more than a decade. Former driver Shane Carson is organizing a reunion of some of the drivers who were there in March 1978 when it all started. Included in this year's event is an autograph session for the "original outlaws" like Allen on Saturday afternoon.

Bobby Allen didn't compete in that first race, but he did race at a "test" two-day show that Johnson promoted at Lincoln Speedway in New Oxford, Pa. in 1977. Allen was in plenty of other WoO shows in 1978 though, and he finished third in the very first WoO season behind the champion, Steve Kinser, and Rick Ferkel. Doug Wolfgang and Jack Hewitt rounded out the top five.

Boyd won the series’ inaugural event March 18, 1978, ironically in a non-wing car.

Allen said he met Johnson a few years before that first WoO race at a race in Shreveport, La., and he was involved in Johnson's first promotion at Lincoln before the World of Outlaws was formed.

"I just love racing, and I wanted people to see how they ran at places like Knoxville and Manzanita," he said. "Some people had never seen guys run up against the wall like they do at places like that.

"I wanted to have guys like Jimmy Boyd, Doug Wolfgang, Chuck Amati and people like that put on a show at Lincoln, and Ted was talking to all of us about organizing a series," he said.  "Originally it was Ted; me, and my sponsor, the M & J Coal Company, that were going to promote that show at Lincoln, but then they bought me out and I just drove in it. I can't remember exactly when it was or who won though."

Allen has seen a lot of different tracks and been in a lot of races since then too.

Now all his attention is focused on getting Schuchart and Jacob Allen more experience.

They will be getting their first look at Devil's Bowl this weekend. Devil's Bowl is unique because the frontstretch is a little lower than the backstretch, so the drivers go up and down hill during the course of a lap. It will definitely be challenging, but they're both looking forward to experiencing it for themselves.

Fans who can't attend the races at Devil's Bowl can follow along through DirtVision.com. Shark Racing, Schuchart and Allen have Facebook pages and Twitter accounts, and Schuchart has a Web site at Shark1s.com. Team apparel can be purchased through that Web site or at the track. Other information is available on the series' Web site at woosprint.com.

Blake Hahn Struggles with Setup at I-30 Speedway

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (April 14, 2014) - Blake Hahn's weekend with the Lucas Oil ASCS presented by MAVTV American Real was one of ups and downs as the Oklahoma driver ended up sixteenth at the I-30 Speedway in Little Rock, Ark.

"We had a good Heat Race, ran second to Jason Johnson and had a really good car so we had a pretty good starting spot for the A-Feature but just missed the setup a little bit," explained Hahn. "We had a good car, just couldn't exit the corner really well."

After starting twelfth, Hahn worked to eight before the caution displayed on Lap 8. On the restart, the setup seemed to slip away.

"I went up and tried the top, and it really didn't work so I went back to the bottom and pole putted but still couldn't get around them, so I tried the two groove and a couple cars got around me so I just went back to the bottom. It was a good night, just wish we could have gotten at top ten"

Following the I-30 Speedway weekend, Hahn sits eleventh in Lucas Oil ASCS driver standings.

The Oklahoma shoe will take advantage of the tours off weekends to compete with the ASCS Regions, traveling to Texas this coming weekend to compete with the Griffith Truck and Equipment Gulf South Region at the Heart O' Texas Speedway in Waco, Texas on Friday, April 18 and Gator Motorplex in Willis, Texas on Saturday, April 19.

"We ran Waco last year for the first time, and got a win there so I'm excited to go back to Waco. I've never been to Willis, but I've always heard it's dry so hopefully I have a good night there."

Brandon Hahn Sidelined at I-30 Speedway

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (April 16, 2104) - Brandon Hahn had high expectations going into Saturday's Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour event at the I-30 Speedway, but things would not play out as hoped. After initial reports were of mechanical issues, it was later revealed that Brandon was having back problems that hampered his ability to breath.

"I like racing, but I like living more," said Hahn of the situation.

Choosing to skip his Heat Race, Hahn was able to make laps in the B-Feature, but elected to return to the Pits after only a few laps. Seeking medical attention after returning home on Sunday, Hahn explained that he pulled a muscle in his back but was able to get treatment and is feeling much better.

Returning to the driver's seat this coming weekend, Hahn will compete with the American Bank of Oklahoma Sooner Region and Speedway Motors Warrior Region.

"We're going to a track I've never been to before. I just want to make the A-Feature since I'm not racing for points. We're rolling with the Maxim again, but other than that I'm not worrying about too much," said Hahn of Friday's races at the West Siloam Speedway.

"I am looking forward to Saturday at Springfield. I ran really go there last year until I ran off the end of the track but other than that, I really like that place and just hope my back will hold up for me."
