Dereck Ramirez Tops Shady Oaks Action for $3k; Royal Purple Next

Woodward, Oklahoma (02/19/15) – Dereck Ramirez was at the right place at the right time and powered his Ramirez Motorsports #4r LG2 by Owens/Cornett Racing Engine Open Wheel Modified to the $3,000 win on Friday night at Shady Oaks Speedway (Goliad, Texas) in the United States Modified Touring Series (USMTS) event.

“It was a pretty good race track early,” said Ramirez. "You could run the bottom or the top. Then all the stuff on the bottom was blowing up to the top. You just had to be there at the end.” He concluded by saying, “I feel bad for Johnny (Scott). He had the best car. I'll take it; a win’s a win. I really didn’t have anything for him at the end."

In the right place at the right time, Ramirez took down the main event win for his first United States Modified Touring Series (USMTS) victory since back-to-back triumphs in the USMTS Winter Nationals at the Royal Purple Raceway (Baytown, Texas). Ramirez pocketed $3,000 for his efforts and ended a dry spell dating back to Nov. 19th, 2011.

In preliminary action, a fourth to second run in his heat race would earn Dereck a spot in the redraw where he was the recipient of the fourth starting spot for the 35-lap finale. Pole-sitter, Zack VanderBeek jumped out front at the drop of the green flag and paced the first seventeen laps around the 1/3-mile oval before eighth-starting Johnny Scott muscled ahead to lead lap eighteen.

Scott maintained control for the next fourteen laps until a terminal failure sidelined him with just three laps remaining in the 35-lapper. Ramirez inherited the lead and held off Ryan Gustin and Jason Hughes in the closing laps en route to victory. Zack VanderBeek and Phillip Houston rounded out the top five finishers.

Ramirez opened the weekend on Thursday night with a fourth place, while mechanical issues sidelined him early in Saturday’s finale.
