Rilat Earns Victory, Three Top Fives During Busy Week in the Northwest

Inside Line Promotions - ALGER, Wash. (July 8, 2013) - Travis Rilat continued his hot streak last week as he picked up another victory and a trio of top-fives across the Northwest in Richard Saumure's car.
After claiming the ASCS Northwest Region Speedweek opener a week ago Friday, Rilat started the Oregon portion of Speedweek on Monday at Southern Oregon Speedway in White City. He advanced from fourth to third in his heat race, which started him 14th in the main event.

Rilat moved into the top 10 when misfortune found him near the midpoint of the 30-lap feature. Another driver spun in front of Rilat, who had nowhere to go and crashed.

"I think he ran into the car in front of him and got it completely sideways in front of me," Rilat said. "I ran into him. It straightened him out and I spun around and a couple of cars ran into me."

The team changed the front radius rods, but Rilat returned to the pits soon after with an 18th-place finish.
"The car wasn't handling and we weren't going anywhere, so there was no need to tear up anymore equipment," he said.

Rilat and the team headed to Coos Bay Speedway in Coos Bay on Tuesday, when he made a late pass to secure a third-place finish in his heat race. After starting fifth that gave him enough points to advance to the feature redraw, where Rilat pulled the No. 7 to start on the inside of the fourth row.

"We usually always set the thing up for late in the race," he said. "Any time the track gets slicker it seems to get better."

After fading toward the back of the top 10 early, Rilat maneuvered his way toward the front in the closing laps and outlasted overall Speedweek champion Roger Crockett for a fourth-place finish.

The positive momentum continued on Wednesday at Willamette Speedway in Lebanon, where Rilat led all eight laps of his heat race to garner his eighth heat win of the season. That put him in the redraw and the No. 2 was drawn, starting Rilat on the outside of the front row.

He led from the green flag to the checkered and was only challenged for lead once - on a late restart when Shane Stewart tried a slide job in turns one and two.

"The car was working really good," Rilat said. "That was my kind of track. Any time we can start on the front row it's going to be pretty good. It's tough to win from the back, but when you start up front you're supposed to win.

"Shane, on that last restart he tried to do a slider. I had gotten in the slick on the start and just didn't take off. It allowed him to do that slide job. We had the best car there and I was able to drive around him. Those are the nights that keep you coming back."

Rilat picked up his second win of the season and second in a five-race span.

With Thursday an off-day for the Fourth of July, Rilat and the team headed to Cottage Grove Speedway in Cottage Grove for a weekend doubleheader to wrap up Speedweek beginning Friday. However, a questionable call by an official in his heat race ended with the team loading up and leaving the track early.
"We didn't agree with the official's decision," Rilat said. "Due to that and the poor track conditions we decided to load up and get out."

Despite leaving that race early and skipping the finale on Saturday, Rilat finished 10th in the Speedweek standings.

The team headed to Skagit Speedway in Alger, Wash., on Saturday for the Midseason Championship event, where the teams not competing for points qualified and were lined up in the feature behind the drivers in the hunt for the championship.

"It was tough," he said. "All we did was run hot laps, time trials and a feature. The 360 feature was the first feature and the track was extremely heavy. It was tough to do any kind of passing."

Rilat qualified third quickest and lined up 11th in the feature.

"I just got a car at a time," he said. "You couldn't really get many at one time because the track was pretty narrow. If the track would have blown off and got slick it would have been a ton better. When it's heavy like that everybody is pretty equal."

Rilat maneuvered to a third-place finish to earn the Hard Charger Award. It marked his sixth podium of the season.

Rilat will return to action in Saumure's car on Friday and Saturday at Grays Harbor Raceway in Elma, Wash., with the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour.

SALDANA AND MOTTER TEAM LOOKING TO UNCORK A VICTORY
AT THE BRAD DOTY CLASSIC

LIMA, Ohio (July 8, 2013) – The World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car drivers will compete in the Brad Doty Classic at Limaland Motorsports Park Wednesday, July 10.

“This is a very important race,” said Joey Saldana, driver of the Motter Equipment Fatheadz Eyewear 71M Sprint Car.  “Our goal would be to win the Classic, but it’s also the last test and tune opportunity before we head to the 30th annual Kings Royal at Eldora Speedway on Friday and Saturday.

“We are doing pretty well right now, but there’s always room for improvement.  Our consistency has gotten better but with the tough competition on this circuit, you just can’t rest.  You always have to be thinking about what to do next and what can be done better.  There’s a lot of pressure on the crew and the drivers in this series.”

Saldana won the Brad Doty Classic in 2006.  The race pays tribute to sprint car driver Brad Doty who was injured in a severe accident at Eldora Speedway in 1988 that left him without the use of his legs.

“Now is the time to peak,” said Saldana.  “The biggest races of the series are coming up here in the thick of the summer, starting with the Kings Royal.

“Dan and Ruth Motter (car owners) will be with us at Lima and Eldora and we still are looking for a victory for them.  We’ve been very close a handful of times this year.”

Saldana is sixth in World of Outlaws point standings.  He has three quick times, two track records and eight top-5 finishes this season.

Earl Pearson Jr. Wheels the No. 44 to Second Place at Muskingum County
Mother Nature has other plans for "Independence 50" at Portsmouth Raceway

Trinity, NC (July 9, 2013) - Bobby Labonte Racing (BLR) left the race shop located in Trinity, NC Tuesday evening ready for two days of racing with the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series (LOLMDS). The action was scheduled for Wednesday, July 3 at Muskingum County Speedway and Thursday, July 4 at Portsmouth Raceway. Earl Pearson Jr., coming off a win at Wythe Raceway, was anxious to get behind the wheel of the No. 44 Lucas Oil Products Longhorn Chassis.
Pearson Jr. set the fast time among Group A and finished second in Heat 1 Wednesday night at Muskingum County Speedway. The No. 44 Longhorn chassis started the feature in fifth place.  Looking for a second-consecutive win, "the Hurricane" was able to make his way to the front, however, fell short of Devin Moran, who won the Budweiser 50 Feature race. Pearson Jr. brought home second place. Earl Pearson Jr. gained one spot in the Lucas Oil Championship point standings, moving up to fifth, only 170 out of the lead.
"These past two weeks have been great for Bobby Labonte Racing," said Pearson Jr. "Of course I'd love to be in victory lane, but I'm happy with the finish and a good points weekend. A big thanks to all the guys on the road and at the shop who continue to work hard to give me the best they can in these new Longhorn Chassis each week."
The LOLMDS was set to race at Portsmouth Raceway in the "Independence 50" on Thursday night. However, it was postponed until Friday due to heavy rain in the area. The race teams were ready to race Friday night but the LOLMDS and Portsmouth Raceway Park officials had to make the tough call to cancel the race due to continuing showers. Mother Nature gained the win for the sixth time this season.
BLR will be at the race shop for a few days before heading out on a two-week road trip. The team makes its first two stops at Tri-City Speedway in Granite City, IL on Friday, July 12 and on Saturday, July 13 at the Lucas Oil Speedway in Wheatland, MO.

Wood Rebounds From Early Miscue to Finish 12th at I-90 Speedway

Inside Line Promotions - HARTFORD, S.D. (July 8, 2013) - Cole Wood learned a quick lesson in his first visit to I-90 Speedway on Saturday with the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour.

"In the heat race a guy named Chuck warned me about going off the backstretch," he said. "I kept it in the back of my mind and unfortunately I still managed to do it on the first lap."

After starting fourth, Wood lost a couple of positions before rallying to finish fifth. He was relegated to the B Main, which he started seventh.

"The track was perfect for the B Main," he said. "I did slide jobs on everybody. I passed a bunch of cars."
Wood maneuvered from seventh to the runner-up position during the 12-lap consolation to transfer to the main event, which he started 18th.

"I felt really good the first five laps before anybody found the rubber," he said. "The first five or six laps I was really good on top, passing a bunch of cars. All of a sudden the rubber came in right in the middle of the track. It was probably two lanes up from the bottom and nobody could pass."

Wood managed to finish 12th, which was his 21st top-15 result of the season.

With the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour, he was scheduled to make his first appearance at Billings Motorsports Park in Billings, Mont., on Monday before a massive storm postponed the event to Tuesday.

"I think it's going to be fun," he said of the track. "It's got kind of sweeping corners. It's going to be a fast track."

On Wednesday, Wood will compete at Electric City Speedway in Great Falls, Mont., before a doubleheader on Friday and Saturday at Grays Harbor Raceway in Elma, Wash.

Big Game Motorsports Drivers Dollansky and Swindell Endure Frustrating Weekend

Inside Line Promotions - DODGE CITY, Kan. (July 8, 2013) - Heading into the famed Month of Money with the World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series, both Big Game Motorsports teams are coming off a frustrating weekend.

Competing with the premier sprint car series at Huset's Speedway in Brandon, S.D., on Wednesday and at Dodge City Raceway Park on Friday and Saturday, Sammy Swindell scored a pair of ninth-place finishes and Craig Dollansky earned a weekend-best 12th in the trio of events.

Swindell narrowly missed putting the Big Game Treestands backed car in the dash on Wednesday and Saturday by only one position in his heat race, a fate that has seemed to taunt the team this season.
"That's been the way most of our year has been," he said. "We needed to be a couple of hundredths or thousandths slower to get on that front row. We keep barely missing it. This year there's not a lot of passing. It's just been unfortunate that we've missed here or there by a little bit."

Dollansky and the Eyecon Trail Cameras car was plagued by a couple of mechanical gremlins throughout the long weekend.

"It's not easy to forget about bad nights, but we also know we can string together some good nights," Dollansky said.

The week started on Wednesday for the annual event at Huset's Speedway, where Swindell qualified fifth and finished third in his heat race to miss the dash by one spot. It lined him up 12th for the main event, which he ended ninth.

"That starts us on the sixth row and there wasn't much going on there," he said. "We may have moved up a few spots. It was one of those nights it wasn't much fun. You just got out there and raced as hard as you could and you still couldn't pass anybody."

Dollansky was bit by a mechanical issue that the team didn't find until the night was over. After qualifying 24th quickest, he finished fifth in his heat race to claim the final spot advancing to the feature. Dollansky then piloted the Eyecon Trail Cameras car from 23rd to 16th in the main event.

After taking the Fourth of July to travel to Kansas for the Boot Hill Showdown, Dollansky's team again found a problem when the team unloaded at Dodge City Raceway Park on Friday.

"When we unloaded on the first night of Dodge City we found another mechanical issue," he said. "The last four races we've been fighting a couple of races with mechanical issues and a couple where nothing seemed to go our way. We feel pretty good about some of the things we sorted out the past few races. That continues to be a work in progress, but we're making strides."

Dollansky put together two nearly identical performances during the Boot Hill Showdown doubleheader. The Eyecon Trail Cameras car qualified 13th quickest and advanced from fifth to fourth place in his heat race both nights.

He placed 14th in Friday's feature before a late-race caution doomed the team in Saturday's main event. Dollansky was up to seventh when the car in front of him didn't take off during the restart.

"We got ourselves in a good position," he said. "We had a restart where a car didn't take off and we got caught behind him. It seemed like it took forever and by that time the entire outside lane had gone. If that race would have stayed green we would have gotten by some more race cars."

Instead the Eyecon Trail Cameras car dropped nearly a half-dozen positions and Dollansky finished 12th to cap the weekend.

"It was a disappointing night," he said. "We know what we're capable of and what has gone on the last few nights has hurt us. We've just got to go out and do our job and everything will work out."

On Friday, Swindell qualified fourth quickest and finished sixth in his heat race to advance to the dash. However, he tried the top groove and dropped from third to seventh in the dash to line up on the inside of the fourth row for the main event.

"I just made a wrong decision and it really cost me before I could get down to the bottom," he said.
With the track taking rubber on the bottom groove, the Big Game Treestands car got caught on the outside during a restart in the feature and again lost several positions before rebounding with a second-straight ninth-place finish.

Swindell wrapped up the weekend by qualifying fifth quickest on Saturday and again placing third in his heat race - one spot away from the dash. That started him 11th in the main event.

"We moved up a few spots and the car was actually one of the best cars we've had in a main event," he said. "We came up with a little different combination. We were gaining and there were people running side by side and there wasn't any place to go."

Then Swindell was trapped behind Dollansky during that last restart, which cost the Big Game Treestands car multiple positions.

"The whole outside row went and we lost five spots before we got to the flag stand," Swindell said. "We had a car capable of running in the top five if we could have had the opportunity to pass people."
He salvaged an 11th-place finish.

Big Game Motorsports and the World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series heads to Limaland Motorsports Park in Lima, Ohio, on Wednesday for the Brad Doty Classic before returning to Eldora Speedway near Rossburg, Ohio, on Friday and Saturday for the $50,000-to-win Kings Royal.
Swindell, who is fourth in the championship points standings - only eight points ahead of Dollansky - claimed the Kings Royal crown last season.
