Chevrolet Performance Super Late Model Series News Release: Contact – ROBY HELM – (865) 207-4157 September 26, 2014 MADDEN WINS BY A NOSE IN EAMS CHEVY SUPER SERIES RACE FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: PHENIX CITY, AL – Chris Madden of Laurens, SC came out on the winning end of a photo finish on Friday night in the 30-lap main event for the Chevrolet Performance Super Late Model Series at East Alabama Motor Speedway. In a side-by-side finish, Madden kept the nose of his Crowder Trucking Special in front of Jake Knowles of Tyrone, GA for a .046 second margin of victory. “That was a good race,” Madden said. “Jake got a pretty good run coming off the fourth turn, but I was able to keep my nose in front of him at the checkered flag. This was the first time we’ve run this car and it was good in long runs, but with that late caution flag, I knew Jake was going to be tough on the inside.” Knowles had to settle for second in the Cedartown Electric Rocket, and the Chevy Super Series point leader Ronnie Johnson of Chattanooga, TN finished third in the NeSmith Chevrolet Special. Ryan King of Anniston, AL took the fourth spot in the David King Automotive Special and Ray Cook of Brasstown, NC rim rode the Tommy Pope Constriction Special from 17th to fifth. Tim Busha of Boaz, AL drove the Kilpatrick Racing GRT to a sixth-place finish and Josh Adkins of Talladega, AL was highest finishing Rookie of the Year Candidate with a seventh-place effort in the Yellow Hammer Construction Special. Pierce McCarter of Gatlinburg, TN was eighth in the McCarter Brothers Racing CVR. Tyler Crowder of Lamont, FL finished ninth in the Crowder Brothers Trucking Rocket, and Montana Dudley of Phenix City, AL rounded out the top ten in the Dale’s Quick Lube Rocket. Madden’s win culminated a clean sweep of the event. Madden was the fast qualifier by out-timing the 29-car field with a lap around East Alabama Motor Speedway in 15.995 seconds, and then led all 30 laps of the race enroute to the $2,000 victory. The two ten-lap B-Main Races were won by Dudley and Jeff Smith of Chatsworth, GA in the Hill Motorsports Warrior. Madden took the lead at the start of the race from the pole position followed by Knowles, Crowder, McCarter, an Johnson. On lap two, Johnson got by McCarter for the fourth spot, and King dropped McCarter back to sixth on lap five. Johnson passed Crowder for third with an inside move on lap six. The lead duo of Madden and Knowles reach the cars on the tail of the lead lap by lap nine. Madden made some big moves in lapped traffic to shake Knowles from his back bumper, and had two lapped cars between himself and Knowles by lap 14. By lap 18, Madden had pulled out to a half-straightaway lead. The lead Madden enjoyed would come to an end on lap 20 when Smith spun in turn four, with some help from Jacob Grizzle of Blairsville, GA in the Carolina Performance Special while battling for the seventh spot. Grizzle was ticketed with the caution flag, and restarted at the back of the cars on the lead lap. Madden had Knowles, Johnson, Crowder, King, McCarter, Smith, Cook, Adkins and Dudley doubled up behind him for the Dixie-Style Double File Restart. King was able to get by Crowder for the fourth spot on the restart, and McCarter moved back up to fifth on lap 22. The second and final caution flag of the race came out on lap 24 when Lavon Sparks of Phenix City, AL stalled the Hester Racing GRT on the front straightaway. With less than ten laps to go, it was a single-file restart with Madden leading Knowles, Johnson, King, McCarter, Cook, Busha, Adkins, Crowder, and Smith. Knowles went to the inside of Madden on the restart, and Johnson worked the outside cushion. Knowles was able to get the nose of his car to the inside of Madden, but the leader had the better momentum coming off the corners to stay on the point. Johnson couldn’t gain any ground on the high side, but Cook could, as he sailed around McCarter to take over the fifth spot on lap 25. In the final laps of the race, Knowles kept working the bottom groove on Madden, who couldn’t shake the second-place car. Knowles was better than Madden getting off turn four, while Madden was better than Knowles getting off the second turn. As the leaders took the white flag, Knowles reloaded to take another shot at Madden, knowing his best chance for the win would be coming off the fourth turn. Madden had found a groove he liked, but it opened up the inside of the track to Knowles. Coming off the fourth turn to the checkered flag, the crowd came to their feet, as Knowles built up a head of steam, pulled alongside Madden, but fell just short at the checkered flag by one-third of the time it takes to blink your eye. The Chevrolet Performance Super Late Model Series returns to East Alabama Motor Speedway on Saturday night for a 50-lap $3,000-to-win race.
