NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series News Release: Contact – ROBY HELM – (865) 207-4157 July 5, 2014 JOHNSON TAKES FOURTH NeSMITH CHEVROLET DLMS WIN OF THE SEASON AT ARKADELPHIA FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: BREMEN, AL – Ronnie Johnson of Chattanooga, TN won the 40-lap NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series Salute To America Nationals race Saturday night at Arkadelphia Speedway driving the NeSmith Chevrolet Special. The National Dirt Late Model Hall of Fame Inductee led all 40 laps on his way to his fourth win of the season. Johnson said hard work from a bunch of guys that took time away from their families to help him during the Salute To America four-day tour was enough motivation to win the race in a car that had a broken an axle tube the night before during hot laps at East Alabama Motor Speedway in Phenix City, AL. “This win feels good because the guys that volunteered to go out on the road with me for this four-day four-race tour stayed up all night and helped me repair this car after we broke and axle tube last night in hot laps,” Johnson said. “I had to win this race tonight for them because the sun was coming up when we finished up and got to our hotel room. I just can’t thank these guys enough.” Chase Edge of LaFayette, AL finished second in the Edge’s Gas Company Special and Chris Noah of Rainbow City, AL drove the Old Man’s Garage Special to a third-place finish for Rookie of the Race honors. The 2008 NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series National Champion Chip Brindle was fourth in the PDR Looper Clips Special, and Jon Biles of Centerville, AL took the fifth spot in the Biles Welding Special. Shep Lucas of McKenzie, AL started 13th and finished sixth in the Performance Kwik Change Trak-Star. Jimmy Elliott of Cleveland, TN drove the Car Smart Auto Sales CVR to a seventh-place finish and Brent Barrett of Cleveland, MS was eighth in the Custom Spraying, Inc. GRT. Ronny Lee Hollingsworth of Northport, AL took the ninth spot in the 18 Inc. Special, and Johnny Stokes of Columbus, MS rounded out the top ten in the Bassett Hound Motorsports GRT. In preliminary action, Edge was the fast qualifier among the 35 entrants with a lap in 15.585 seconds. The two ten lap B-Main races were won by Hollingsworth and Mack McCarter of Gatlinburg, TN in the McCarter Lumber CVR. Johnson grabbed the lead at the start of the race from his outside front row starting spot followed by Edge, Ronald Dunn of Corinth, MS in the Dunn Motorsports Special, Biles, and Justin McRee of Woodstock, AL in the High Roller Race Cars Special. Johnson caught the cars on the tail end of the lead lap by lap seven, and by the eighth tour, Johnson and Edge pulled out to a full straightway lead over Dunn. The first of six caution flags came out on lap 12 when Michael Blount of Sumrall, MS stalled the Lamar Auto Salvage Trak-Star on the front straightaway with power steering belt issues. Johnson had Edge, Dunn, Biles, McRee, Noah, Brindle, Heath Minor of Ralph, AL in the Mike Minor’s Auto Repair Warrior, Stokes, and McCarter doubled up behind him for the restart. When the yellow light gave way to the green light for the restart, McRee passed Biles for the fourth spot. Stokes powered around Minor and Brindle to take over the sixth spot on lap 14, McRee began to challenge Dunn for the third spot on lap 18. McRee was able to drive under Dunn on the backstretch on lap 19 to take possession of the third spot. Johnson and Edge held a full straightaway advantage over McRee on lap 20, but that deficit was quickly erased on lap 20 when Dunn spun out of the fourth spot in turn four collecting Stokes in the process to light the yellow caution bulb for the second time in the race. Dunn was done for the night, but Stokes got his sixth spot back for the restart at the halfway point of the race. After the restart, Stokes spun in turn four and had to surrender the sixth spot on lap 22 to bring out the third caution flag of the race. McRee stepped to the outside to battle Edge for second on the restart, with J-Mac taking the position on lap 23. A suspension piece broke on McCarter’s car while he was running eighth on lap 24 causing him to spin in turn four to bring out the fourth caution flag. Johnson led McRee, Edge, Noah, Biles, Minor, Brindle, Hollingsworth, Lucas, and Elliott down for the restart. Brindle got by Minor and Biles on lap 25 to move up to the fifth spot. By lap 26, Johnson pulled out to a half straightaway lead over McRee. That gap was gone on lap 27 when McRee spun in turn four and collected Edge. McRee was done for the night, but Edge was able to restart in the second spot followed by Noah, Brindle, Biles, Minor, Lucas, Hollingsworth, Cale Finley of Athens, AL in the Finley Racing Special, and Barrett. The final caution flag came out on the restart when Minor spun in turn two and collected Finley putting both cars out for the night. The final laps of the race went caution-free, as Johnson kept Edge behind him and worked through lapped traffic in the last five laps of the race to take a .956 second margin of victory at the checkered flag. The victory was the second in as many nights for Johnson and his fifth of the season driving the NeSmith Chevrolet Special. The defending NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series Champion methodically worked his way to the front of the pack and took the lead from Evan Ellis of Plantersville, MS on lap 41. Johnson then pulled away, forced his way through heavy lapped traffic, and then survived a late caution flag to take just over a one second margin of victory under the checkered flag. “I love coming to Magnolia Motor Speedway, but for some reason, I just have never qualified well here,” Johnson said. “We qualified 21st tonight, gained a couple of spots in the B-Main to start 15th, and then the track came to me in the main event. The Black Ice came in, and that just fits my driving style, and we had the right tire combination to get to the front.” Johnson’s four-race Salute To America Nationals journey started off a series of setbacks in the first two races. He arrived at Talladega Short Track on Thursday night just in time to qualify, but his tenth fastest time was disallowed because he failed to go through pre-race tech. As the NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series point leader, Johnson took a provisional, started 23rd and finished ninth. On Friday night at East Alabama Motor Speedway in Phenix City, AL, Johnson broke an axle tube in hot laps, unloaded his backup car, won his B-Main, started 11th and finished tenth. Johnson and his crew of volunteers who came along for the four-day tour repaired his primary race car for Saturday night’s race at Arkadelphia Speedway in Bremen, AL. The National Dirt Late Model Hall of Fame Inductee was back in his winning form on Saturday night, as he qualified second quick, and led all 40 laps at Arkadelphia Speedway for the victory. Then with the win after a bad qualifying run at The Mag on Sunday night, Johnson put the exclamation point on how one can overcome adversity to become a champion. After leading the first 40 laps of the race on Sunday night, Ellis finished second in the Ellis Welding Special. The 2008 NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series National Champion Chip Brindle of Chatsworth, GA took the third spot in the BDR Looper Clips Special. Montana Dudley of Phenix City, AL was fourth in the Eiland Pools Rocket and was the Rookie of the Race. Tyler Burgess of Quitman, MS drove the Burgess Outdoor Power Special to a fifth-place finish and Grant Pearl of Anniston, AL finished sixth in the Griffin Trucking Special. Marcus Minga of Shannon, MS turned in his highest finish of the season with a seventh-place effort in the B&M Salvage Rocket, and Brent Barrett of Cleveland, MS was eighth in the Custom Spraying GRT. Chad McCool of Millport, AL started 22nd and finished ninth in the Tenn Tom One Stop Special, and Chris Mullinax of Birmingham, AL rounded out the top ten in the CRM Motors GRT. Ellis was the fast qualifier among the 39 entrants with a lap in 15.102 seconds. The two 12-lap B-Main races were won by Dudley and Johnny Stokes of Columbus, MS in the Bassett Hound Motorsports GRT. Ellis took the lead at the start of the race followed by Nick Thrash of Meridian, MS in the McDevitt Enterprises GRT, Kyle Shaw of Millport, AL in the Sweddenberg Logging Trak-Star, Pearl and Neil Baggett of Shannon, MS in the Montgomery Farms Special. Baggett dropped out of the race on lap nine and Shay Knight of Columbus, MS moved his Olive Branch Can Am Special up to the fifth spot. Ellis reached the cars on the tail end of the lead lap by the 12th tour, while Shaw passed Thrash for second-place on lap 17. Ellis had a full straightaway lead on Shaw by lap 22. Brindle drove up to the top five and settled into the fourth spot on lap 24, and Johnson made his presence known in the top ten on lap 25 running in the ninth spot. The first of two caution flags in the race occurred on lap 29 when Knight spun in three while running fifth. The top ten for the double-file restart got shuffled up even further when Ashley Newman of Ripley, TN dropped out of the seventh spot during the caution period driving the Greg’s Sawmill Special. Ellis had Shaw, Brindle, Thrash, Pearl, Dudley, Johnson, Burgess, Minga and 12-year-old Cruz Skinner of Oxford, AL in the Skinner’s Body Shop Special doubled up behind him for the restart. When the green flag came back out, Brindle powered around the outside of Shaw to take the second spot, and Johnson came from seventh to fifth. The track came to Johnson’s set up after the restart, as he went to the high side to get around Pearl for fourth on lap 31, followed by Shaw for third on lap 32, and then raced Brindle side-by-side for second on lap 34. The defending National Champion Johnson cleared the 2008 National Champion Brindle for the second spot coming down the front straightaway on lap 35. With 15 laps to go, Ellis had a half straightaway lead on Johnson, but with each lap that went on the scoreboard, Johnson was closing quickly on the race leader. By lap 40, Johnson had closed to within three car lengths, but that advantage for Ellis soon disappeared, as the Chattanooga Flash drove under Ellis to take the lead on the inside coming down the front straightaway. Once he was on the point, Johnson began to pull away from Ellis, under the leader got in heavy lapped traffic. Ellis was reeling in Johnson, who was caught behind two lapped cars running side-by-side. On lap 47, Johnson found enough room to shoot the gap between the two lapped cars, and escape the advancement of Ellis. Coming off the fourth turn on lap 49 to receive the white flag, Stokes spun and collected Burgess in turn two. That brought out the caution flag and set up a green-white-checkered finish. Stokes was ticketed with the caution flag and Burgess got his sixth spot back for the restart. In the two lap dash to the finish, Johnson pulled out to take a 1.031 second margin of victory under the checkered flag. The next race for the NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series Touring Division will be the $3,000-to-win No Till 50 at Clayhill Motorsports in Atwood, TN on July 19. Johnson will take a 108 point lead in the standings over Mack McCarter of Gatlinburg, TN into the next event.
