CHRIS CANTRELL RECEIVES NeSMITH CHEVROLET VP RACING FUELS RoY HONORS

DAWSONVILLE, GA – Chris Cantrell of Chester, SC received a $5,000 check from VP Racing Fuels on January 12 at the NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series Awards Banquet at the Georgia Racing Hall of Fame for taking the 2012 VP Racing Fuels Rookie of the Year honors.

Cantrell finished sixth overall in the 2012 NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series Touring Division point standings after overcoming some early and late season adversity.

Cantrell competed in 19 of the 22 races on the 2012 schedule and accumulated 1,498 points with five top five finishes, 11 top ten finishes, two fast time awards, and led 16 laps of competition driving the CANCO Rocket.

Cantrell was involved in a crash early in the season that saw him ending up on his roof, but he battled back to contend, not only for the VP Racing Fuels Rookie of the Year honors, but also for the NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series Touring Series Championship. Another accident late in the season, however, forced him to miss three races.

The second accident was not on the race track, but rather on the highway while he was headed to a racing event. God was watching over Cantrell, his family, and his crew in the accident that destroyed his truck and trailer, but no one was injured.

“We were traveling through downtown Atlanta when the brakes on the truck suddenly locked up and that jack knifed the trailer into the back of the truck cab,” Cantrell said. “Three minutes before the accident, my wife, who was sitting in the back seat of the truck, decided to lie down. When the trailer jack knifed into the back of the truck cab, it destroyed the part right where she was sitting three minutes before the wreck.”

Cantrell plans on beginning his sophomore season with the NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series Touring Division on January 28-February 2 with the Rock Auto.com Speedweeks Presented by Racecar Engineering at Bubba Raceway Park in Ocala, FL.

Cantrell hopes to become only the second driver in series history to follow up the Rookie of the Year Award with a series championship. The 2007 Rookie of the Year Chip Brindle of Chatsworth, GA came back to win the NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series Championship in 2008.
