Mississippi State Championship Challenge Series

Meridian, MS – The stage was set to honor the Mississippi State Championship Challenge Series 2012 Champion, Scott Dedwylder, and his team Saturday night at the MSURiley Center in downtown Meridian. Dedwylder, who makes his home in Vossburg, MS, and his team pulled off an extraordinary feat in 2012 by winning the championship without visiting victory lane. “This goes to show that consistency can win you championships,” commented series director Charles Thrash.

Dedwylder, who started the 2012 race season driving his own #33g Barry Wright had to shut down his racing operations midseason due to lack of funding. “You know racing is tough, it takes a lot of time, money, equipment and other stuff just to make it to the track each week. At the same time I was trying to race my own car, my business was really growing and I was needing to invest all my money resources into growing it,” commented Dedwylder. When Dedwylder shut down his race team for 2012, good friends and long-time competitors Chad “Heavy” Caldwell and Stacy Caldwell stepped up and allowed Dedwylder to compete in the rest of the 2012 M.S.C.C.S events in their #4c Barry Wright. “It was a good match for Heavy, Stacy and myself, and I cannot thank the Caldwell's enough for allowing me the opportunity to drive their car,” stated Dedwylder.

Dedwylder wrapped up his 2012 championship season with 7 top 5 finishes and 8 top 10 finishes in only 10 of the 11 events. Dedwylder missed the May event at Jackson Motor Speedway when he had to cease operations of his own team.

The 2012 M.S.C.C.S campaign was a great success for long time Columbus, MS late model competitors Rick and Brian Rickman. This brother duo competed in all 11 M.S.C.C.S. events with “Flyin” Brian Rickman picking up a win at the September event held at Whynot Motorsports Park.   Along with his win, Brian also compiled 3 top 5’s and 8 top 10’s in his #90 Rickman Trucking/Stuckey Enterprises Mastersbuilt to earn an overall 3rd place finish in the final series points standings, only 15 points behind big brother Rick Rickman who finished in the runner up position behind champion Dedwylder. Rick compiled 3 top 5 finishes and 6 top 10 finishes respectively.

Finishing 4th in the final M.S.C.C.S. points standings was Collinsville, MS driver Chad Thrash. Thrash picked up 1 win at the June event held on the gumbo at Greenville Speedway. Thrash also wheeled his #1c Structural Steel/Thrash Racing/Pro Power Rocket to 3 top 5 finishes and 6 top 10 finishes.
Gulfport, MS driver Jeremy Broadus rounded out the top 5 in 2012 M.S.C.C.S. final points standings. Broadus only competed in 9 of the 11 events after missing the last 2 events due to the death of his father. Mr. Ray Broadus was a long-time supporter of not only his son's racing, but racing in general. Mr. Broadus was always a great sight to see in the pit areas around the South and he will be thoroughly missed. In the 9 races that Jeremy was able to compete, he racked up 4 top 5’s and 6 top 10’s which included 3 straight 3rd place finishes to start the season in his B-Line Fabricators Mastersbuilt by Stuckey #88b.

Bub McCool took 4 wins and 1 second place in 5 starts with the M.S.C.C.S. in 2012 while “The Intimigator” Chris Wall took 3 wins respectively. Ronnie Lee Hollingsworth and Terry English both took 1 win each to give the series a total of 6 different winners in 11 events.

Over 125 different competitors took part in the 2012 M.S.C.C.S. campaign at 5 different tracks.
The 2013 M.S.C.C.S. schedule is shaping up nicely and with 2012 champion Dedwylder expected to return to defend his title, expectations for the 2013 season are at an all-time high for the M.S.C.C.S. “I have been fielding phone calls since the last race of 2012 with drivers telling me their intent to run with the state series again in 2013 and I wouldn’t be surprised to see some of the names from the past to once again contend for the 2013 championship. We are excited to get started in March at Whynot Motorsports Park and continue throughout the race season providing the Super Late Model fans and teams some great racing action at some great racing venues,” commented Thrash.
