Dale McDowell Wins in Substitute Role at Crossville; Heads to Cleveland County!

(CHICKAMAUGA, GEORGIA)  Substituting for Joe Armes, who did not make the trip to the Crossville Raceway USA in Crossville, Tennessee on Friday night, April 25, Dale McDowell drove his #77 GRT entry to victory lane in the $3,000 to win Southern Regional Racing Series (SRRS) event.  Dale timed in fastest in his group during SRRS qualifying and later started the A-Main from the outside of the front row.  After the dust had settled, Dale found himself celebrating the convincing $3,000 victory over Randy Weaver, Billy Ogle, Jr., Mike Marlar, and Brett Wyatt.  You can view full results from the Crossville event online at www.southernregionalracingseries.com!

“It was good to win last Friday at Crossville, especially considering I didn’t even plan on racing,” quoted McDowell following the win.  “Joe (Armes) called late and said he wasn’t going to make the trip, so I got my drivers suit on and went to work.  The car was really good and the key to the win was probably our starting spot.  It was pretty hard to pass, so once I got the jump at the start of the race, it was just a matter of not making any mistakes.”

Dale is scheduled to invade the Cleveland County Speedway in Lawndale, North Carolina this upcoming weekend for a pair of Dirt Late Model events.  He will drive Kelly Hamrick’s #97 Bloomquist racecar in the $5,000 to win Carolina Clash Late Model Series race on Friday night, May 2 and in the $10,000 to win ‘Skyler Trull Memorial’ on Saturday evening at Cleveland County.  Dale piloted the Hamrick entry to a strong top five finish in the $50,000 to win ‘Colossal 100’ at the Dirt Track at the Lowe’s Motor Speedway in Concord, North Carolina back on April 19.  You can learn more about the doubleheader weekend at Cleveland County online at www.clevelandcountyspeedway.com.

Dale McDowell Racing (DMR) would like to thank all of their sponsors including:  New Vision Graphics, Base Racing Fuels, Racetek Racing Engines, Dover Cylinder Heads, Rocket Chassis, Brinn Transmissions, Cizmar, Comp Cams, Delph Communications, Design 500, Dyer's Rods, Fel-Pro Gaskets, Frankland Racing Supply, FSR Racing Products, Hoosier Tire, Hypercoils, K&N Filters, Mason Racin', MSD Ignition, Ohlins Shocks, Outwears, Inc., Oval Craft, Performance Bodies, Peterson Fluid Systems, Race It, Ringers Gloves, Schoenfeld Headers, Scott Performance Wire, Stealth Carburetors, Sunoco HCR Plus, Total Power Batteries, TWM, Weld Wheels, Wiles Driveshafts, Wilwood, and Woodward.

Ray Cook Scores Pair of Victories at Green Valley and Clinton County Last Weekend!

(BRASSTOWN, NORTH CAROLINA)  The Ray Cook Racing team picked up their third and fourth wins of the 2008 racing season last weekend, as the Brasstown, North Carolina based Dirt Late Model team competed in a trio of events in Alabama, Tennessee, and Kentucky.  On Thursday night, April 24, Ray Cook recorded a $3,000 triumph in the 'Road to Dega 50' at the Green Valley Speedway in Glencoe, Alabama.  After posting the fourth quickest lap in qualifying, Ray took advantage of a questionable call to move race leader Brandon Kinzer back a position after jumping the initial start of the race.  Since Ray was in second behind Kinzer, officials made the call to move him out front of the stout field.  Following 50-green flag racing laps around GVS, Ray was still out in front of the field, as he took home the win over Shane Clanton, Brandon Kinzer, Ronnie Johnson, and Clint Smith.

On Friday evening, April 25, the action turned to the Crossville Raceway USA in Crossville, Tennessee for a $3,000 to win Southern Regional Racing Series (SRRS) show.  Ray timed his #53 MasterSbilt / Grover entry in second fastest in his group during qualifying and later rolled off from the outside of the third row for the A-Main.  While running in the fifth position early in the feature event, Ray broke a timing belt, which sent his #53 machine pitside with engine woes and a fourteenth place performance.

The weekend tripleheader for the Ray Cook Racing team wrapped up on Saturday, April 26 at the Clinton County Speedway in Alpha, Kentucky.  Despite suffering a myriad of mechanical issues throughout the night, Ray was able to set fast time in SRRS qualifying to earn the rights to the pole position for the main event.  The driver known as the "Tarheel Tiger" was then able to capture his second win of the weekend by outlasting Brandon King, Eric Hickerson, Jay Brinkley, and Byron Michael in the $3,000 to win show.  You can view complete results from all three races online at www.greenvalleyspeedway.com and www.southernregionalracingseries.com!

“With the exception of breaking on Friday at Crossville, it was an excellent weekend for the Ray Cook Racing team,” commented Cook earlier in the week.  “We caught a break on Thursday night at Green Valley when the officials put us ahead of (Brandon) Kinzer, which I thought was a mistake.  I feel bad for him and I actually tried to stay behind him for the longest time under caution until they told me over the Raceceiver to get ahead of the #18.  Then at Clinton County on Saturday, that was my first ever trip to that place and I enjoyed racing there.  The lapped traffic worked to my advantage, as I think my car was a little more maneuverable than some of those other guys up front.”

The #53 team will storm back into the state of Alabama this upcoming weekend for a pair of Southern Regional Racing Series (SRRS) shows.  The Penton Raceway in Penton, Alabama will play host to a $3,000 to win event on Friday night, May 2, while the Green Valley Speedway in Glencoe, Alabama will hold a $5,000 to win series race on Saturday evening.  You can learn more about the doubleheader weekend in Alabama online at www.southernregionalracingseries.com.

Ray would like to thank all of his supporters including: Bill Elliott Racing, MasterSbilt Race Cars, Grover Racing Engines, Hamrick's of Gaffney, Youngblood Concrete Special, Jacky Jones Automotive Group, Southeast Dealer Services, Engines, Inc., A+ Moving and Storage, James Cook Construction, Arvil Cook Property Investments, Maytag from Elliott Heating & Cooling, Alturna Mats, American Race Tire, Bert Transmissions, BRT Racing Products, Custom Craft Headers, Delph Communications, Demon Carburetors, Frankland Racing Supply, ISC Racers Tape, JB Performance, K&N Filters, Mason Racin', MSD Ignition, Ohlins Shocks, Out-Pace Racing Products, Outerwears, Inc., Oval Craft, PPM Racing Products, PRC Racing, Real Wheels, Schaeffer Oil, Scott Performance Wire, VP Racing Fuels, Wiles Driveshafts, and Wilwood.

Wendell Wallace Readies for Tripleheader Weekend Following OSAS Win at Talladega!

(BATESVILLE, ARKANSAS)   The Wendell Wallace Autosports team invaded the Talladega Short Track in Eastaboga, Alabama over the weekend for a pair of Dirt Late Model events.  While at the track deemed as the "Hornet's Nest," Wendell Wallace recorded his second win of the 2008 racing season on Saturday night, April 26.  Wendell laid down the fastest lap in O'Reilly Southern Allstars Series (OSAS) qualifying on Saturday and later rolled off from the pole position for the 50-lap main event.  The Batesville, Arkansas driver ran second for the majority of the race before passing leader Tony Knowles for the point in heavy lapped traffic on the last lap.  Wendell received $5,000 for the exciting OSAS triumph over Knowles, Shane Clanton, Ronnie Johnson, and Tim Busha.

A night earlier, Wendell and his #88 team competed in a $2,000 to win unsanctioned event at TST.  Wendell was fourth quickest in time trials, which earned him the outside second row starting spot for the A-Main.  The driver known as the "Batesville Bullet" ran amongst the leaders throughout the race and was battling for the lead with Shane Clanton and Chris Madden on the final lap when he flew over the banking.  Wendell did not finish the event and instead drove his #88 GRT / Gaerte entry into the pit area and was later relegated with a disappointing seventeenth place effort.  You can view complete results from the doubleheader weekend online at www.talladegashorttrack.com!

"I feel good about the way our car is running right now, as I had a shot to win both of those races at Talladega over the weekend," stated Wallace this week.  "I was right there with (Shane) Clanton and (Chris) Madden on Friday night when I decided to make a move to the top on the last lap.  Unfortunately, the car didn't stick up there and I flew over the bank.  Then the race on Saturday was a lot of fun and made up for the disappointment from Friday night.  Tony (Knowles) probably had a little better car than we did, but lapped traffic played into our hands and we were able to get the win."

Following the triumph last Saturday at TST, the Wendell Wallace Autosports team will look for additional success this upcoming weekend in Kentucky and Missouri.  The Kentucky Lake Motor Speedway in Calvert City, Kentucky will play host to the first two events of the weekend on Friday and Saturday, May 2-3.  The annual '99 Extravaganza' will take place this weekend at KLMS and a $9,999 top prize is up for grabs both nights.  You can learn more about each of these Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series shows online at www.lucasdirt.com.

After KLMS, the action will then head west to the Monett Speedway in Monett, Missouri on Sunday, May 4.  The World of Outlaws Late Model Series will sanction a $7,000 to win race on Sunday in the Show-Me State.  You can learn more about the 40-lapper at Monett online at www.worldofoutlaws.com.

Wendell Wallace and the GRT House Car team would like to thank the following sponsors for their continued support:  J&J Steel, GRT Race Cars, Wincrest Farms, Gaerte Engines, JFR Graphics, Sunoco Race Fuels, Garrett Racing, C&S Cable Construction, Delph Communications, Integra Shocks, Port City Racing, Wilwood, Sweet Mfg., Hoosier Racing Tires, and Frankland Racing Supply.

R.J. Conley Scores Second Win of 2008 Last Saturday at K-C!

(WHEELERSBURG, OHIO)  R.J. Conley racked up his second win in as many weekends on Saturday night, April 26 at the K-C Raceway in Chillicothe, Ohio!  R.J. won the dash at K-C to earn the pole position for the $2,000 to win A-Main.  At the end of the main event at the south-central Ohio speedplant, the Wheelersburg, Ohio native crossed the finish line first ahead of Jackie Boggs, Ben Adkins, Doug Drown, and Duane Chamberlain.  A night earlier, R.J. was in action in another $2,000 to win event at the Rocky Top Raceway in Coal Grove, Ohio.  He ran fourth in the dash prior to finishing a strong second in the 30-lap A-Main behind winner Jackie Boggs.

Rod Conley also competed at both Rocky Top and K-C to round out his month of April.  "Hot Rod" ran third in his heat race at Rocky Top on Friday night, April 25 before finishing thirteenth in the $2,000 to win main event.  The driver of the #71r then won his heat race at K-C the following evening prior to running a solid eighth in the A-Main.  Delmas Conley, the patriarch of the racing Conley's, entered only the K-C event on Saturday evening.  After a strong heat race victory, the Dirt Late Model Hall of Famer wheeled his familiar #71 entry to a seventh place performance in the feature event.  You can view complete results from both Rocky Top and K-C online at www.rockytopraceway.net and www.kc-raceway.com!

"It was a great weekend for us, as we were able to run up front both nights against some good competition," quoted R.J. Conley earlier in the week.  "Our car was awesome up top at K-C on Saturday and it seemed like everyone else was running the middle to the bottom of the track.  That allowed us a clear lane up top and we were able to get the win.  Then at Rocky Top, I got up alongside of Jackie (Boggs) for the lead with about eight to go and Rod unfortunately brought out the caution.  I never could get back going after the caution period and wound up second."

UPCOMING SCHEDULES:
Delmas Conley
May 3 | K-C (OH) Raceway, Regular Show | $2,000 to win

Rod Conley
May 2 | Rocky Top (OH) Raceway, Regular Show | $2,000 to win

Mike Marlar Wins 'Spring Sizzler' at Bardstown; Readies for Doubleheader Weekend!

(WINFIELD, TENNESSEE)  The "Winfield Warrior" Mike Marlar closed out his busy month of April with a pair of events at the Crossville (TN) Raceway USA and the Bluegrass (KY) Speedway last weekend!  Mike reached victory lane for the second time in 2008 on Saturday night, April 26 at the Bluegrass Speedway in Bardstown, Kentucky.  Aboard the Estes Racing Engines #78 C.J. Rayburn entry, Mike won his heat race prior to passing race leader Jordan Bland on lap eighteen of the 30-lap O'Reilly Battle of the Bluegrass Dirtcar Series-sanctioned feature event.  The Winfield, Tennessee native went on to lead the last twelve circuits of the $3,000 to win A-Main to record the triumph over Victor Lee, Jordan Bland, Tyrel Todd, and Don O'Neal.</ p>

A night earlier, Mike drove his own #157 machine at the Crossville Raceway USA in Crossville, Tennessee.  Mike timed in second quickest in his group during Southern Regional Racing Series (SRRS) qualifying and later started the $3,000 to win feature event from the inside of the fourth row.  He then moved up three positions during the course of the A-Main to bring home a solid fourth place effort behind winner Dale McDowell, Randy Weaver, and Billy Ogle, Jr.  You can view complete results from the doubleheader weekend online at www.southernregionalracingseries.com and www.battleofthebluegrass.com!

"The weekend went pretty well for us," stated Marlar today via telephone.  "I brought my own stuff to Crossville on Friday night and ran well, despite the track being one-lane for the feature.  Then at Bardstown, we had a really good night in the Estes machine.  Jordan (Bland) ran a great race, but we were able to get a little better as the race wore on and that was the key.  I have to thank the Estes family for allowing me to drive their equipment on occasion and it was a thrill to drive their car into victory lane last Saturday at Bardstown!"

Mike has two more O'Reilly Battle of the Bluegrass Dirtcar Series events listed on his upcoming weekend schedule.  The Ponderosa Speedway in Junction City, Kentucky will play host to a $3,000 to win show on Friday night, May 2.  The action will then turn to the Richmond Raceway in Richmond, Kentucky on Saturday evening, May 3 for another $3,000 to win race.  You can learn more about the doubleheader weekend in the Commonwealth of Kentucky online at www.battleofthebluegrass.com.

Rainy Bayou for Timms in USMTS Action
The week in review:
It was rain, banjo music and reminders of home for the Western Flyer Xpress crew as they continued their quest for the 2008 O’Reilly USMTS Southern Series championship. This week took the team to Champion Park Speedway in Minden, La., for a Friday night show -- just a short six and a half hours from home. But with Timms “still on the clock” for work at his family-owned Western Flyer Xxpress out of Oklahoma City, the team took to the road Thursday evening in order to be at his job via laptop Friday morning. Now, with technology, there is no excuse to miss work to go racing.
The weather was good and all systems seemed “green” for Friday night’s encounter at the quarter-mile, semi-banked oval just 30 minutes east of Shreveport. But “The promoter tried to rain out the event with the water truck,” explained Timms. “I kept looking for the track operator from Oklahoma City but I didn't see him.”
Racing, or some form of, did take place as heat races took place as scheduled. Randy started ninth in the fifth heat in his Shaw by Taylor and quickly slopped his way to a third-place finish after the 10 laps were complete. However, after the sixth and final heat race was complete, the rest of the night’s program was postponed. Randy did accumulate enough passing points to put him 11th and lock himself into the make’up Holley “A” Main, which will take place Thursday night, May 8.
After the race was declared a rain-out, Randy, not one to shy away from saying what he really thinks, asked USMTS president Todd Staley,”"Do you realize what just happened?” When Todd replied “no” Randy quipped, “It was God’s way of saying, ‘Here is how you rain-out a race track, you didn't quite get it done with that water truck!’”
The next day it was just a short 150 miles south of Shreveport to Glenmora and the 3/8-mile, semi-banked oval of Thunder Valley Speedway. Now, history of this track tells us this track puts out some of the best late model racing to be found in Cajun country. Be it the World of Outlaws or the defunct Hav-a-Tampa late model series, people would come from everywhere to fill the seats.
But, as Randy would put it, “The track is in the middle of the sticks, you couldn't even imagine a race track being where it is located!”
With Randy being in virgin territory, familiarity with the area is non-existant. So, when directions that Randy and the rest of the USMTS regulars were given as “head west off the highway ‘til you hear banjo music,” Randy thought they were kidding.
“They weren’t.”
After being at the track for 30 minutes, the skies opened up and the race was a rain-out and postponed with a make-up date to be announced. Timms and the rest of the Western Flyer Xpress crew then had to backtrack that 150 miles PLUS the other 400 more to his Wheatland, Okla., home. But experiences and memories remained as the team now knows what to expect on their return trip to The Bayou State the weekend of May 8-10.
A weekend preview:
This weekend there are no lap tops, no unchartered territories and no banjo music as Randy and the rest of the O’Reilly USMTS Southern Series regulars head to Lake Country Speedway in Ardmore, Okla., this Friday night, May 2. He will head two hours south on I-35,  coming into the weekend second in series points -- just a mere 19 points behind current points leader Jason Hughes.
The 2007 LCS Winter Nationals champion has amassed nine feature victories at the 3/8- mile track over the last three years and thinks “It's awesome” that the USMTS is making their first ever visit there.
The next night will be another first for the series, heading to the fast little quarter-mile bullring of Cowtown Speedway in Kennedale, Texas. It should be a bit of a test for Randy as he hasn't raced at the track for about four or five years.
In closing:
Randy wants people to realize that his racing dreams would not be possible if not for the following sponsors: Western Flyer Xpress, Childhelp USA, Stacy's Custom Stripes, Bell Racing, Kent Automotive, Duralite Wheel Covers, Jeff Taylor Motorsports and Wells Race Engines.
For all you apparel-buying Randy Timms fans, new merchandise is now available at each and every O’Reilly USMTS Southern Series event, or you can purchase online at the official Randy Timms website at www.randytimms.com.
Also on the site you can find out more about Randy, his schedule, all his sponsors, a kids corner and a photo gallery.

Hafertepe Looks to Fly High at U.S. 36 Raceway in Missouri High Banked Nationals

Osborn, MO— May 1, 2008— Sam Hafertepe Jr. has raced on his fair share of bullrings over the last couple of years as he has climbed the sprint car racing ladder, but he never saw a track quite like U.S. 36 Raceway in Osborn, Missouri until last season, when he made his first start at the ultra-high-banked and blazing fast 3/8-mile with the Advance Auto Parts World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series. The track is one of just three on the 2008 schedule that sees the drivers turn single digit laps.

Hafertepe will have an opportunity to return to U.S. 36 Raceway this weekend as the Advance Auto Parts World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series will contest a full night of racing at the bullring in Western Missouri on Friday, May 2 with the third annual Missouri High Banked Nationals.

“It’s a really fun place to race,” said Hafertepe, driver of the G.H. Plumbing J&J. “You have to really get up on the wheel. For the size of the track, a lot of things happen real fast there.”

Hafertepe competed twice at the track last season, and was victorious in the annual Bud Shoot-out for 360-sprint cars in June. In his first stop at the track with the World of Outlaws last May, he was sixth fastest in time trials, after having just a handful of laps in practice to get acclimated with the unique configuration of U.S. 36 Raceway. The track record of 9.846 seconds which was set in 2006 will again be challenged on Friday, May 2 by Hafertepe and the rest of the World of Outlaws competitors.

“We’ve had good experience at the track and it’s been a good place for us to race at,” said the native of Sunnyvale, Texas. “It’s not very similar to anywhere else we race. It is pretty unique. It has its own shape and design and of course the high banks.”

Hafertepe and his team have a good baseline to refer to from last season at U.S. 36 Raceway as far as set-up, with the speed that he showed in both events he competed in at the track. He has raced on a couple of bullrings already this season and has tried a number of different combinations in search of the perfect balance as the World of Outlaws schedule begins to pick up this week.

“There are a few things we will look back at,” he noted of what he learned at U.S. 36 Raceway in 2007. “We’re trying a new deal this year and I want to put some of my new ideas to work as well. At the same time though, we’ll use some of the old things we ran there last year and try to apply it to the 410-car and see if we can win another race there.”

Hafertepe is confident heading into the Missouri High Banked Nationals, after his win at the track last June. In the previous two World of Outlaws events at the track, there have been two winners and several drivers have been able to work their way up through the field, especially using the high line around the track.

“You know what it takes to get around the track, because you have won there before,” shared the 2006 American Sprint Car Series Sooner Region champion. “Running with the Outlaws it is a lot harder to win, but it definitely can be done.”

The event at U.S. 36 Raceway will be the second short track race of the season for the World of Outlaws. Five of the first six races this season have been contested on half-mile tracks, including the series most recent race on April 11 at the famed Eldora Speedway. There will be a slight transition, heading to one of the tightest tracks on the schedule, but after competing nearly 80 times last season in his rookie year with the World of Outlaws, Hafertepe feels confident on any size track he races on that he and his team will have a well-balanced and fast machine.

“You have to have a different mindset for every race track that you go to,” he explained. “You have to be prepared and also have to be ready for anything that can happen.”

While Hafertepe competes against the best sprint car drivers in the world on a nightly basis with the World of Outlaws, his biggest opponent this season has been Mother Nature, who has wreaked havoc on the early portion of the schedule. Despite rain, cold and even snow, Hafertepe and his team have competed a total of 16 times this season. He won in his 2008 debut at North Florida Speedway with the All Star Circuit of Champions back in early February and has five Top-five finishes to-date.

“It’s been really tough,” explained Hafertepe of the weather this spring. “We try to catch some races when we get rained out, but it’s hard at this time. I’m running my own program and we have used a lot of diesel fuel and not gotten a lot of track time. It is difficult to stay focused, but the crew and myself are trying to stay as focused as we can. I think we are doing pretty good at it.”

After the Missouri High Banked Nationals on Friday, May 2, Hafertepe and his team will pack up and head north to the famed Knoxville Raceway in Iowa for the completion of the doubleheader weekend for the World of Outlaws. After some bad luck at Eldora Speedway a couple of weeks ago, Hafertepe is looking to get back on track on two extremely different tracks that will test his versatility.

“If we can have two really solid Top-10 finishes it would be a good weekend,” he said. “With the long break that we have had, it would be nice to get two Top-10 finishes. We have to make sure that we finish both nights and finish strong.”
