After starting 4th on the feature grid Newman was running in the 3rd spot as the race approached its midway point. Bad luck would strike the leader as he was forced to cut through the infield to dodge a lap car. Newman and the 2nd place runner went three-wide with the leader entering turn three with Ashley taking the advantage exiting turn four.
