Mike Marlar Masters SAS TN State Championship by NAPA at Smoky Mountain Speedway Maryville, TN-October 26, 2013- The Southern All Star Racing Series made its final visit of 2013 to Smoky Mountain Speedway in Maryville, TN on Saturday evening and Mike Marlar of Winfield, TN would pick up a $10,000 payday and take the win in the TN State Championship presented by NAPA event. Marlar’s victory would come for new car owner Ronnie Delk in the Delk Equipment/RS Trading sponsored #157 Rocket Chassis, Cornett Race Engines powered mount. Marlar’s win made him the 13th different winner with the tour for the 2013 season. The victory by Marlar, a second-generation racer, was his second career Southern All Star Racing Series. His previous series victory came in the 2012 series season finale Blue/Gray 100 event at Cherokee Speedway in Gaffney, SC. Tommy Kerr of Maryville, TN and Mike Marlar would duel for the race lead on the opening lap of the contest, with Marlar winning the battle for the top spot, with Chris Madden of Gray Court, SC overtaking Kerr for second on trip later. Kerr would have mechanical issues on lap 4 and draw a caution and be in and out of the pit area for the remainder of the event. The restart had Marlar out front still, while Madden and Chris Ferguson of Mount Holly, NC would battle for second, while Scott Bloomquist of Mooresburg, TN gave chase to that duo. Marlar would begin working traffic on lap 12 and Madden would close in on the leader as the pair worked slower traffic masterfully in tight quartered action. Skylar Marlar of Winfield, TN would draw the next caution flag on lap 18 when his machine would slow at the bottom of turn one and disaster would strike Ferguson three laps later when his evening was done with a broken axle tube. The final restart would see Marlar begin to pull away from Madden and open up almost a full straightaway lead over Madden before Madden would begin to charge back on Marlar in the final ten circuits of the 50 lap, $10,000 event, but would come up a few car lengths short at the finish. Marlar would see the checkered flag first, while Madden would settle for second place, while Bloomquist would come home in the third position. Randy Weaver of Crossville, TN and Billy Ogle, Jr. of Knoxville, TN would round out the top five finishers. The remainder of the top ten finishers at the TN State Championship presented by NAPA at Smoky Mountain Speedway would be Jonathan Davenport of Blairsville, GA, Vic Hill of Mosheim, TN, Casey Roberts of Toccoa, GA, William Thomas of Phenix City, AL, and Jason Welshan of Maryville, TN. The next Southern All Stars Dirt Racing Series events will conclude the 2013 race season on Saturday November 16 at Cleveland Speedway in Cleveland, TN for the 25th Annual Gobbler 50, paying $5,000 to win and on Sunday November 17 at Cherokee Speedway in Gaffney, SC for the 23rd Annual Blue/Gray 100, paying $10,000 to win.
