Wendell Wallace Takes Last Lap Talladega O'Reilly Southern All Star Triumph
Eastaboga, AL – After a pair of rain delays threatened to wash out yet another O'Reilly Southern All Star sanctioned event, Mother Nature finally granted enough of a window to complete the O'Reilly Auto Parts Cup Weekend Special at Talladega Short Track. Wendell Wallace of Batesville, AR was able to slip into the lead on the final lap while race long leader Tony Knowles was marred in heavy lap traffic. The win was worth $5000 to the GRT House Car pilot.
Fifty-three drivers signed in for Sunoco Race Fuels Pole Qualifying. Chris Madden looked to repeat his previous night's performance and set the early mark as the first driver to dip into the fourteen second range with his 14.868 second lap. Later Knowles lowered the mark to 14.858 seconds. He held the top spot but for just one lap as Wallace blasted around the high-banked one third mile oval and rung in at 14.768 seconds to capture the pole.
Shortly after time trials were completed a heavy shower blanketed the Eastaboga area soaking the TST surface which brought out the red flag on the racing event. A break in the rains allowed the TST Staff to begin working on running the track back in to make it raceable. A request for ATVs and golf carts to help with the efforts drew well over fifty takers and soon the Sportsman cars were called to the speedway. But, just as the Sportsman were lining up for their heat race, the rains came again.
Once again the TST Staff went to work. Officials made a quick decision to wait out the rain after a check of the National Weather Service radars. TST got a little celebrity help in running the track back in when NASCAR Sprint Cup Champion racer Tony Stewart climbed behind the wheel of the TST Pace Truck and began to make laps with the packer vehicles. The call was once again made for the assistance of the ATV brigade and once again the response was immediate and the Sportsman were able to complete the preparation of the track.
Three eight lap last chance heat races were then staged to set positions eleven through twenty-two for the fifty lap feature. Dingus Griffin made a mid race charge on reigning OSAS Champion Ivedent Lloyd to take the win in the first heat. Multi-time TST Champion Danny Peoples moved from sixth to take the win ahead of James Ward in the second heat. The third and final heat was won by TST regular Tim Bush over Dewaine Hottinger. OSAS provisionals went to Jason Fitzgerald and Derek Ellis. The TST promoter's option went to Ross Martin.
With the weather pressing down on TST officials decided to move the O'Reilly Southern All Stars feature up in the order. After two rain delays over more than two hours the feature rolled off at 12:18 am CST. Knowles was able to launch his machine to the lead riding the high line in to turn one when the green flag waved. Wallace challenged to his inside but Knowles pulled away down the back straightaway. Wallace hugged the hub in second while Randy Weaver and Chris Madden battled for the third position behind him.
Madden was able to cover the spot while Weaver slipped to fourth. A few laps later Terry Smith, who started sixth, asserted his muscle and bypassed Weaver for the fourth position as Ronnie Johnson lurked behind. Meanwhile Knowles had caught the tail of the field and began to place drivers a lap down. Knowles first bypassed Fitzgerald and Ward. He then drew to the deck of Kyle Beard who was also running the high line. Knowles, who had enjoyed nearly a full straightaway advantage, searched for a route around the Beard machine to no avail.
All of that allowed Wallace to close in on the leader. Wallace, who had disposed of Fitzgerald and Ward as well, pulled door to door with Knowles as they exited turn four on the twenty-fourth circuit. Knowles showed his frustration as he made contact with Beard's rear bumper entering turn one. But things settled down as the caution was waved when Hottinger took the ride over the turn three banking and into the concrete barriers. While under caution Ross Martin and Jake Knowles made contact which ended both drivers' nights.
With the drivers reset in the Dixie Double File formation the green once again waved. Eight starting and previous night winner Shane Clanton made a move on the high side to rumble in to the third position over Ronnie Johnson. Just as before, with a clean race track in front of him, Knowles marched away from the field. Johnson battled back to Clanton's inside while Madden looked to join the fray.
With only ten laps remaining, Knowles was once again working heavy traffic. Knowles got by Fitzgerald and Ward once again with relative ease but found the going a little tougher when he caught 2007 OSAS Rookie of the Year Stacy Holmes. Holmes was embroiled in a battle of his own with Derek Ellis and Holmes was using Knowles preferred top side line. Knowles was able to move to the bottom and roll by Holmes and then Ellis. But Wallace had cut the lead to just a few car lengths.
Knowles once again rolled to the rear deck of Beard and just as before he was unable to get by the Truman, AR racer. As the leaders were displayed the white flag Wallace dove to the inside of Knowles and pulled even with him as they entered turn number one. As they spilled onto the back straightaway, Wallace was able to clear Knowles and take the lead and ultimately the win. Knowles took second ahead of his teammate Shane Clanton, Ronnie Johnson and Tim Busha.
Wallace emerged from his GRT machine in victory lane to a loud and raucous cheer from the huge TST crowd. "That was really a lot of fun. If Tony hadn't have got into all the traffic we would not have had anything for him. He had a real good car. But I knew he was committed to the top so I tried it on the bottom there and pulled up beside him. I hate it for him because he drove a great race but we will certainly take it. I had to try and make up for last night (Wallace slid off the track while running second at the white flag) and this is about the best way we could have done that." Wallace said in TST's victory lane.
Wallace's winning GRT Race Car is powered by a Gaerte Race Engine and is sponsored by C&S Cable Construction, Wincrest Farms, Garrett Racing, J&J Steel, JFR Graphics, Delph Communications, Frankland Racing Supply, Integra Racing Shocks, Sunoco Race Fuels, Sweet Manufacturing, Hoosier Race Tires, Schaeffer Racing Lubricants, Racing Optics, Bryant Motorsports, Port City Racing and Wilwood.

Weekend At Randy Mooneyham's Show-Me State Tracks Set To Usher In May For World of Outlaws Late Model Series
Concord, NC - By Kevin Kovac, WoO LMS P.R. Director
One track has become a staple on the World of Outlaws Late Model Series.
The other, meanwhile, has never before played host to the nation's premier dirt Late Model tour.
It will be a mix of the familiar and the unknown for most of the WoO LMS stars when the trail invades Missouri the first weekend in May to contest two nights of action at veteran promoter Randy Mooneyham's tracks - Lebanon I-44 Speedway on Sat., May 3, and Monett Speedway on Sun., May 4.
"It's going to be one of the biggest weekends of the year for racing in Southwestern Missouri," said Mooneyham. "Two World of Outlaws shows back-to-back sets up a perfect weekend for the fans and racers."
Lebanon I-44 Speedway, a high-banked, three-eighths-mile oval that was paved in the '90s before switching back to a clay surface, is on the WoO LMS schedule for the fourth consecutive season. But there's something different about this year's 40-lap, $10,000-to-win event - it's the first time that the Outlaws visit on the fast track's regular night of operation.
The WoO LMS has made its annual stop at Lebanon I-44 on summer mid-week dates for the past three years - July 3, 2007 (winner: Clint Smith of Senoia, Ga.), July 25, 2006 (Brian Birkhofer of Muscatine, Iowa) and July 26, 2005 (Steve Francis of Ashland, Ky.).
"We're excited to have the Outlaws coming to Lebanon on a Saturday night," said Mooneyham, who has operated the facility for six years. "Running on our regular night could make this our best World of Outlaws show ever."
Following Lebanon's checkered flag the WoO LMS will shift its action 100 miles to the southwest on Sunday night (May 4) for a first-ever stop at Monett Speedway, a 38-year-old track known as 'The Grand Old Lady' that Mooneyham has promoted for the last 28 years.
"Without a doubt this is the biggest race ever run at Monett," Mooneyham said of the 40-lap WoO LMS A-Main that offers a top prize of $7,000. "With the great names that are coming, it's going to be a show like no one has ever seen at Monett."
While at three-eighths-of-a-mile Monett is similarly-sized to Lebanon I-44, drivers will face a different set of challenges at Mooneyham's longer-running oval.
"Monett is a little flatter and the turns are a little tighter than Lebanon," said Mooneyham. "It takes a little more of a slick-track style, but it's good and wide. The drivers always love to race at Monett."
Plenty of nationally-known all-stars will be invading Monett - many for the first time in their careers - as well as Lebanon.
Former Lebanon I-44 WoO LMS winners Smith and Francis will lead the charge to the sister tracks, hitting town as returning tour regulars. Francis is the defending WoO LMS champion, while Smith is coming off a career-high third-place finish in the 2007 points standings.
Birkhofer has also indicated that he plans to be in the field to chase another WoO LMS win at Lebanon I-44 as well as a triumph at Monett.
And three-time WoO LMS champion Billy Moyer of Batesville, Ark., who won a WoO LMS event at Lebanon I-44 in 1988 during the tour's first incarnation (1988-89) under late Advance Auto Parts World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series founder Ted Johnson, has plans to take a shot at extending his early-season hot streak on the WoO LMS (four wins in seven events so far and the points lead) at two tracks where he's enjoyed plenty of success of the years.
Also part of the talented roster of WoO LMS regulars who have Lebanon and Monett in their crosshairs is Brian Shirley of Chatham, Ill., who won the 2006 Larry Phillips Memorial event and finished second in last year's WoO LMS A-Main at Lebanon I-44; Shannon Babb of Moweaqua, Ill., who drives a dirt Late Model owned by NASCAR Sprint Cup star Clint Bowyer; Chub Frank of Bear Lake, Pa.; Shane Clanton of Locust Grove, Ga.; Rick Eckert of York, Pa.; 20-year-old Josh Richards of Shinnston, W.Va., who sits second in the current tour points standings; Darrell Lanigan of Union, Ky.; 2007 WoO LMS Rookie of the Year Tim Fuller of Watertown, N.Y.; and John Blankenship of Williamson, W.Va.
With both events co-sanctioned by the O'Reilly MARS DIRTcar Series, that tour's top talents will join the battle at two tracks they have run at often in recent years. Reigning series champion Bill Frye of Greenbrier, Ark., heads the MARS contingent, which also includes former titlist Terry Phillips of Springfield, Mo., Will Vaught of Seneca, Mo., and Jeremy Payne of Springfield, Mo.
Other drivers expected to compete in the weekend events include Jimmy Mars of Menomonie, Wis.; Al Purkey of Coffeyville, Kans., who won the season-opening DLRA event at Monett on April 20; David Turner of Adrian, Mo.; John Anderson of Omaha, Neb.; and Lebanon I-44 dominator Brad Looney of Republic, Mo.
Gates are scheduled to open at 4:30 p.m. at both tracks, with race time set for 7:30 each evening.
General admission for both events is $30 for adults, $10 for juniors (ages 13-15) and free for kids 12-and-under. Pit passes will be $35.

Chamberlain dominates Moler Spring Championships
By: Jody Shannon ( Winners photos attached below)
On a fantastic evening for racing, another large crowd of cars and fans converged to Moler Raceway Park for some Friday night excitement. Duane Chamberlain, winner of two races at MRP in 2007, picked up the Sunesis Late Model Spring Championship victory winning $1,500 for his efforts. "The Buzzard" Doug Adkins, a multiple time winner at MRP last season, won the UMP Modified event pocketing $1,000. Shawn McIntosh made the most of his first appearance of the season by winning the Pure Stock feature and Kevin Riggs bested a competitive field to win the Chevette feature.
At the drop of the green flag, "Insane" Duane Chamberlain lead the pack into turn one. Behind him, sparks would fly and cars would dice three and four wide, with Barry Doss, Arnie Fields, and Robby Hensley battling for the second position. On lap two sixth place starting, and former Moler Raceway Park track champion, "Lil" John Whitney came to life on lap three, first passing Hensley exiting turn four. As Fields made a move to the inside of Doss, Whitney would take his A-Maze-A Stitch Embroidery/Sauls Construction/Sardinia Concrete, Stephan Heating & Cooling/Baker Machine & Fabrication/Masterbilt to the high side of turn four, making it a three wide race across the line. Whitney would build enough momentum to clear Fields in turn three and would shoot past Doss for the second position on lap three. As the trio battled for the second position, Chamberlain would extend his lead and begin making his way through lapped traffic. The first caution flag of the event would wave on lap five for a slowing Josh Burton. On the restart, Daniel Kattine spun in turn four, bringing out the races second caution flag, and bunching the field back up. On the restart, Fields got a good jump and slid underneath Whitney entering turn four. Whitney would be the cause of the next caution flag, spinning his mount in turn three to bring out the races third caution. With ten laps in the book the driver on the move was Sardinia, Ohio's Billy Williams. After having some problems in the heat race and starting the twenty first position, Williams had used the high groove to work his way into the top ten. The field would take the green flag with Chamberlain still leading over Fields, Hensley, Doss, and Tom Sheets. Coming out of turn four on the restart Doss would slide under Hensley for the third position, but would have the move voided, as the yellow flag waved for Chris Shannon stopped outside of turn four. Lap fifteen controversy would ensure, as Doss and Hensley would make contact battling for position, with Hensley spinning and leaving the track with a flat left rear tire. Initially, Doss was called for rough driving and sent to the tail, but after further reconsideration, it was deemed Hensley's blown tire to be the cause of the incident, not overzealous driving on Doss's part. The running order was now Chamberlain, Fields, Doss, Mike Meyers, and Tom Sheets. The green flag would wave the final time on lap sixteen with giving Fields his last chance to make a move on the dominate Chamberlain. Over the course of the last nine laps, "Insane" Daune Chamberlain in his CW Watson Excavating/Dargie Race Engines/Rayburn Chassis would go uncontested and would extend his lead to over a straightaway on his way to the $1,500 Moler Raceway Park Sunesis Late Model Spring Championship victory. For the Richmond, Indiana driver this was his third career feature win at Moler Raceway Park and his first of the 2008. Following Chamberlain was Arnie Fields, Barry Doss, Mike Meyers, and eleventh starting Tom Sheets. Duane Chamberlain, Barry Doss and Arnie Fields brought home heat race wins. Chamberlain was the fast qualifier over the twenty-one car field with a 12.976.
The twenty lap UMP Modified feature would not stay green for long, as outside pole sitter, "Big Daddy" Shawn Tolson would have mechanical problems, bringing out a caution and a complete restart. On the restart, "The Buzzard" Doug Adkins darted to the lead heading into turn one. Behind the leader, Joe Hunley and Rick Jones battled side by side for the second position. Jones would bring out the second yellow flag of the event, spinning in turn four on lap two. The battle for second position would again heat up on the restart with Eric Shepherd diving to the inside of Hunley heading into turn one. Entering turn three side by side the two would make contact, with Shepherd spinning into the infield and bringing out the races third yellow. With three laps now in the book Matt Hamilton found himself in the third position after charging from the tenth starting spot. Hamilton's time up front would not last long, as he pulled to the infield on the very next lap. Lap four would see Hunley pull along side Adkins and challenge for the lead. Hunley nearly made the pass, but looped his car in turn one to bring out the races next yellow flag on lap five. Adkins would pull away from second place running Rick Bingham on the restart. Behind Bingham, Kentucky driver Ray Branscum and Dave Jamison battled for the third and fourth place with former Late Model veteran "The Sledgehammer" Spencer Watson chasing them in fifth. As the laps began to wind down, Adkins continued his blistering pace, lapping up to seventh place. When "The Buzzard" Doug Adkins took the checkered flag, the second through sixth place cars were directly in front him. This was the first win of the year for the Portsmouth, Ohio veteran who currently sits seventh in the UMP Ohio state championship points standings, Adkins also took over the points lead in the MRP UMP Modified seasonal points standings. Following Doug Adkins to the checkers was Rick Bingham, Ray Branscum, Dave Jamison, and Shane Mugavin rounding out the top five. Heat race wins went to Doug Adkins, Joe Hunley, and Rick Jones.
Versailles, Indiana driver Shawn McIntosh lead all fifteen laps to record his first victory of the season at Moler Raceway Park in the Phantom Fireworks Pure Stock division. McIntosh, the 2007 Pure Stock champion at the nearby Lawrenceburg Speedway, who also has a win at Brownstown Speedway in Brownstown, Indiana was never contested on his way to the win. Behind him several drivers swapped the second position including Mike Keller, Roger Ison, and Kevin Hess. Ison solidly took the position with three laps to go, but was too far behind McIntosh to make a run for the lead. The race was only slowed by one caution and three to four wide battles took place the entire event. Following Shawn McIntosh and Roger Ison was Tim Carpenter, eleventh place starting Derrick Davis, and Brian Brewer rounded out the top five. Shawn McIntosh and Brian Brewer were heat race winners.
On the initial start of the Chevette feature, Brandom Elam would lead the pack into turn one, followed by Kevin Riggs, Josh Francis, and Miles Tarvin. Riggs would waste no time, looking to the inside of Elam on lap two. On lap three Riggs switched lines and began pressuring Elam using the high groove. Riggs would finally get around Elam on lap four with Josh Francis right behind the lead duo. Further back in the pack fourteenth starting Don Ellis was on the move breaking into the top five on lap five and working his way around Alannah Weiss on lap six to move into the fourth position. Elam made several attempts to work his way around Riggs, and was able to pull along side him, but could never complete the pass. This was Kevin Riggs first win of the 2008 and the biggest of his career at the Moler Raceway Park. Heat winners were Miles Tarvin and Brandon Elam.
