Legit Speedway Opens the Season. Wendell Wallace takes the UMP DIRT Late model trophy.

April 11, 2016

It was a crisp, cool opening night at Legit Speedway as the crowd braved the cold for a great night of racing, sponsored by K-Kountry 95 of Thayer. A good car count provided the best night of entertainment a racing fan could ask for. In their 2nd season under new ownership, Legit has added UMP sanctioning to the Late Model field and there were a good number of Late Models on hand for opening night. It was Wendall Wallace – (6) taking the checkered flag in the season opener. Wallace started on the pole but was given a hard challenge early by #12 Scott Crigler of Alton. Crigler had his Longhorn on the track for the 1st time and it was running great. He passed Wallace on lap 2 and was looking good when a flat on lap 4 sent him to the pits never to return. From that point, Wallace led the rest of the race. Brandon Ball (32) got the outside position on row 2 after a late lap caution which gave him the advantage on the restart to move up to 2nd position. Kaleb Stolba (33), last years track champion finished in 3rd. Track fans and drivers were excited to see Stolba on the track after a freak accident in November nearly took his leg.  Mayfield Auto Repair are the class sponsors this year for the UMP DIRT Late Model class.

IMCA Modified- sponsored by Service Master of West Plains - Fans got to see a field of 14 battle it out in a great race. Matt Barry (27B) was the winner after battling his way past last years’ class champion, (97) Daryl Hay. Hay finished in 2nd in a very clean, hard fought race. It was Hunter Junkersfield finishing in 3rd.

Super Stock Division – Sponsored by Patriot Race Engines - In the Super Stock Class fans got to see some familiar drivers at the front of the pack in the season opener, as well as some new names. It was Rippen Race Cars

Landon Clinton (18) taking the checkered flag. Clinton drew a good number for the heat races and earned the pole for the feature where he led wire to wire. He was challenged throughout the race by Sundance Keepper and Chris Piper of West Plains and at the end by last years’ class champion, Donnie Miller (26).  It was Miller finishing 2nd and Piper (13P) finishing in 3rd.

USRA B MODs – Sponsored by Reliable Chevrolet –

Ryan Gillmore (66) of Springfield, MO took the checkered in a field of 13 in the feature. Gillmore ran an excellent race in a start to finish win.  Toby Thompson (24T) of Mountain Grove raced his way up from the 5th row to take 2nd.  Last years class champion, Carl Murphy (2M)  finished in 3rd. Bobby Ratterree (20) of Mountain Grove crossed the line in 4th but was DQ’d in post-race tech for having a rev limiter box that didn’t meet the track requirements, costing him his position, check and points for the night.

HOBBY STOCK – Sponsored by Global Steel Buildings – In a race plagued with cautions, it was Corning Arkansas Kendall Prince (76) making his way to Victory Lane. The field seemingly couldn’t get around turn 1 & 2 as driver after driver would lose forward momentum bringing out the yellow flag. In the end, it was Kevin Collins (2) of West Plains taking 2nd on his 50th birthday and Chuck Russell (42) of West Plains taking 3rd.

BONE STOCK – Sponsored by Domino’s Pizza of West Plains – It was newcomer Davey Chaney (22) taking the first checkered flag of the season in the beginners class. Bailey Harlan (31) of Pomona, MO took 2nd and (69) Tony Huston, another newcomer this season finished in 3rd. Last years class champion, Ethan Rushin (14JR) finished in 4th.
