Rodney Sanders Freight Train Mows Down Three More Hunt Wins

Happy, Texas (08/19/14) – Rodney Sanders embarked on another week of competition with the Hunt for the Casey's Cup on Wednesday night in his #20 Swan Energy/Kimrad Transport/Wichita Tank Racing/MB Customs Open Wheel Modified with a trip to Amsoil Speedway (Superior, Wisconsin) for a $3,000-to-win affair.

A heat race win locked Rodney into the redraw for the main event, where he was the recipient of the sixth starting spot. Sanders rallied from his third row starting spot to take the lead from pole sitter, Johnny Scott on lap thirteen. From there, Sanders motored away, and went unchallenged for the remainder of the 40 lapper to cross the finish line just over three seconds ahead of Scott, and Zack VanderBeek. Jody Bellefeuille and Kelly Estey rounded out the top five finishers.

Thursday night found the team pitted at Red Cedar Speedway (Menomonie, Wisconsin), as the United States Modified Touring Series (USMTS) made their first ever visit to the 3/8 mile oval. The $3,000-to-win program drew a field of forty-four Open Wheel Modified warriors. Sanders won his preliminary heat race from the fifth starting spot to earn the most passing points among the entrants, only to draw the eighth starting spot for the 40 lap feature. In the main event, Rodney progressively worked his way to the front and passed his teammate, Jason Krohn, for the lead on lap 24. He led the remaining distance to the checkered flag for his 22nd USMTS victory this season. Krohn held on to second, while Jesse Glenz, Craig Thatcher, and Brent Larson completed the top five.

Mississippi Thunder Speedway (Fountain City, Wisconsin) was the destination for Rodney Sanders and the Swan Energy team on Friday night. With a stout field of forty-four entries on hand Sanders charged from seventh to third in his heat race before drawing the pole position for the feature with Bob Timm on the outside-front-row. Sanders fell in line behind Timm at the start of the race, and then backed up to third when Jason Krohn drove by both drivers on lap four. Sanders got around Timm three circuits later and began to challenge Krohn for the lead, eventually taking over the top spot with thirteen laps complete. Timm moved ahead of both drivers again on the next lap, but Sanders fought back and reclaimed the lead with eighteen laps in the books. From that point, Rodney cruised to his third victory in as many nights over Jesse Glenz, Krohn, Zack VanderBeek, and Tommy Myer. The win marked his 29th overall of the season!

Rodney ended his ultra-busy weekend with the USMTS on Saturday evening at Ogilvie Raceway (Ogilvie, Minnesota), where thirty entrants looked to do battle for a $3,000 top prize. After advancing from the seventh starting spot to a third place finish in his heat race, Rodney moved onto the redraw for the feature. In the redraw he was the recipient of the third starting spot, behind front starters Clay Wagamon and Jason Krohn.

Krohn took command of the race at the drop of the green flag, with Sanders taking second before one lap was complete. Sanders chased Krohn around the high-banked oval for the next 27 circuits before making the pass for the lead on lap 29. Krohn did not give up easy and regained control on lap 32. Sixth starting Zack VanderBeek drove by Krohn on lap 34, but caution flag on lap 37 set up a three-lap dash to the finish. Sanders took second from Krohn on the restart, and chased VanderBeek before ultimately settling in the runner-up spot at the checkered flag. Krohn finished third, while Wagamon was fourth. Stormy Scott completed the top five.

Sanders continues to lead the latest Hunt for the Casey's Cup standings with a 101 point advantage over second place, VanderBeek. Full results from the events and the current standings are available at www.USMTS.com .

The 2014 Hunt for the USMTS Casey’s National Championship resumes with three move events this weekend. Competition opens on Friday night at Lakeside Speedway (Kansas City, Kansas). Saturday night takes the competitors to the wicked-fast, Salina Highbanks Speedway (Salina, Oklahoma) on Saturday night and to Outlaw Motorsports Park (Oktaha, Oklahoma) on Saturday evening. Riley Hickman Crowned King of the Gap in Steelhead Battle Royale

Cleveland, Tennessee (08/19/14) – Riley Hickman notched win #10 of 2014 on Friday night by conquering the annual "King of the Gap" Steel Head Late Model Championship at Volunteer Speedway (Bulls Gap, Tennessee) in his #R1 BIF Motorsports/Hickman Manufacturing Company/CVR Late Model.

The $4,000-to-win program, presented by fellow racer and famed engine builder, Vic Hill, drew a field of thirty-one entrants to the 4/10 mile speed plant. Riley posted the third fastest lap during time trials, locking him into the inside of row two for the 45 lap finale. Pole sitter Jason Trammell assumed the point at the drop of the green flag with Cory Hedgecock, Jason Cardwell, and Hickman trailing behind him. Trammell set a blistering pace out front as he and Hedgecock had caught the tail of the field by lap ten, only to see the race's first caution wave on lap fourteen.

Back under green the second caution of the event waved just two circuits later to slow the pace once again. On the restart, disaster struck for the lead duo when a mechanical failure on Trammell's machine punctured the fuel cell. With Hedgecock right on his bumper, he drove through the spilled fuel and slammed hard into the outside wall in turns three and four.
Following the red flag, it was Hickman out front, followed by Ronnie Johnson and Cardwell. Hickman and Johnson stretched out nearly a full-straightaway lead over Cardwell in the closing laps, with Hickman sailing to the victory. Johnson and Cardwell finished first and second respectively, while Stanley Donahoond and Jason Welshan complete the top five.

Complete results from the program are available at www.VolunteerSpeedway.com .

Saturday night saw the team returning to Boyd's Speedway (Ringgold, Georgia) for a Weekly Limited Late Model program. Twenty competitors registered for the event, and a second place finish in his heat race locked Riley into the fourth starting spot for the feature. In the main event, Hickman advanced to a runner-up finish behind race winner, Mike Tinker. Todd Hernandez, Jeff Smith, and Rex Richey rounded out the top five finishers. Full results from the event are available at www.BoydsSpeedway.net .

"In this day and time with the tough competition you have to face every night to get ten wins in a season is a really big deal for me and my team," said Hickman. "Hopefully we can keep clicking them off the next few months."

This weekend will see Hickman entering a single event as he travels to North Georgia Speedway (Chatsworth, Georgia) for a $4,000-to-win, Ultimate Super Late Model Series event. For more information on the event, please visit www.UltimateSupers.com .

Jeff Taylor Pulls Double Duty During COMP Cams Topless 100 Weekend

Cave City, Arkansas (08/19/14) – Jeff Taylor pulled double duty over the weekend during the 22nd Annual COMP Cams Topless 100 at Batesville Motor Speedway (Locust Grove, Arkansas) competing in both the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series (LOLMDS) and Modified portions of the program.

Jeff took his #5 Industrial Electric/Taylor Chassis Open Wheel Modified into battle on Friday night, and came away with his eighth victory of the 2014 season. Taylor finished second behind Shawn Walsh in his heat race to lock into the main event. In the feature he charged to a convincing victory in front of his hometown crowd over Walsh, Brian Ritchie, Heath Grizzle, and Tyson Franks.

Saturday night's Open Wheel Modified main event would not favor as well for Taylor. He finish second in heat race action to lock into the main event, but a melee while battling for the lead brought his night to a disappointing early end.

Taylor also went into battle with many of the best Super Late Model competitors in the country, chasing the $40,000 top prize in a Keith Craft field entry. The event was co-sanctioned by the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series and the COMP Cams Super Dirt Series presented by Lucas Oil, and drew a stout field of sixty-three entries to the 3/8 mile oval.

In preliminary action on Friday night, Jeff's qualifying efforts earned him the seventh starting spot for his heat race. He advanced to a fourth place finish, leaving him one sport short of the transfer and sending him to a b-main on Saturday. Taylor started on the pole of his b-main, and battled at the front of the pack early before slipping to a third place finish. Unfortunately, only the top two finishers moved on to the 100 main event as his weekend came to an early end.

"Wow what a weekend we had," said Taylor. "First it was humbling to go into battle against so many talented Super Late Model guys. We came up one spot short there of making the show, but I have to thank Keith Craft for the opportunity he gave me." He concluded by saying, "We should've probably got two wins in the Modified, but we just had a freak deal happen to us on Saturday night. It happens though, and we'll move on."

Full results from the events are available at www.BatesvilleMotorSpeedway.net or www.LucasDirt.com .

Next on tap for Jeff is a trip to Boone County Raceway (Albion, Nebraska) this Friday to compete in the Shane Thome Modified Mania event. For more information please visit www.BooneCountyRaceway.com .

Reutzel Looking for Reversal of Fortune with Weekend Double!

Lonnie Wheatley, CLUTE, Texas (August 19, 2014) – Aaron Reutzel had another win within his sights.  But it wasn’t to be, as Lady Luck intervened during Saturday’s Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour outing atop the Salina Highbanks in Salina, OK.

With a parts failure denying win number seven of the year for Reutzel and the BC Fundz/Wren Motorsports No. 87 Triple-X team, Reutzel and crew hope for better fortune with this week’s Thursday-Friday Lucas Oil ASCS double in Arkansas and Tennessee.

After rallying from fifth to second in his heat race to make the redraw at Salina, Reutzel started the main event in fifth.

And he was on the move quickly in the Scott Baylor Racing Engines/Basic One Services machine.

“We pretty much had that one locked up,” Reutzel said afterward.  “We had passed Dustin (Morgan) for second and had run Sam (Hafertepe) down for the lead when a caution came out and put us back to third.”

With the Momentum Racing Suspensions/Danny Sander Construction/ButlerBuilt car the fastest on the track, a parts failure soon after the restart forced Reutzel pitside and resulted in a 16th place DNF instead of a likely win.

“That’s the way our season has been, a few highs along the way with a bunch of lows,” Reutzel laments.  “It’s about time for another high.”

Even with the DNF, Reutzel and the Lone Star Hydro Maintenance/Wright Way Logistics team still sit sixth in National points with several opportunities to move up the point charts including this weekend on Thursday at Riverside International Speedway in West Memphis and then Friday at 104 Speedway in Lexington, TN.

“That hurt us in points,” Reutzel say.  “That along with breaking at Devil’s Bowl early in the season and not making the feature at Yuma, take those three nights out and we’re probably second in points.  We’ve just got to make up for it over the last races.”

2014 Quick Stats:  45 races, 6 “A” Main wins, 22 top-fives, 31 top-tens.

Up Next: Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour action at Riverside International Speedway in West Memphis, AR, on Thursday and then 104 Speedway in Lexington, TN, on Friday.

SALDANA RIDING MOMENTUM INTO EDMONTON’S OIL CITY CUP

EDMONTON, Alberta (Aug. 19, 2014) – The World of Outlaws make a quick trip to Canada Aug. 22-23 for the Oil City Cup.  It is the series’ last excursion across the Northern border this season.

Joey Saldana, driver of the Motter Equipment HE&M Saw Beltline Body Shop 71M Sprint Car, is a three-time winner at Edmonton’s Castrol Raceway, scoring double wins in 2009 and another victory in 2010.

Last year Saldana and the Motter team tallied a fifth place finish on Friday and they were fourth in Saturday’s Oil City Cup feature.

Saldana is currently tied with Kerry Madsen in World of Outlaws points (8519) and race wins (five) in the season’s championship battle.  They will continue their fight for fourth and fifth place across the border.

The Brownsburg Bullet goes into Canada on the heels of momentum from a second place finish at Minot, N.D. this past Sunday following a dogfight with eventual winner Donny Schatz.  The two entertained the fans with an exciting display of nose-to-tail, side-by-side and slide job racing skills, Saldana leading the first 26 laps and Schatz making the steal for the lead on lap 27 of a 35-lap barnburner.

“We hope to build on the Minot experience at Nodak Speedway and use it as a stepping stone to improve in Canada,” said Saldana.

Saldana leads all World of Outlaws competitors in qualifying with 21 quick times to his credit this year.  His goal is to beat his career-best 32 No. 1 qualifying efforts.

“You need to do well in qualifying to help set the stage for a good night of racing,” said Saldana.  “We have a great engine program with Rick Long at Speedway Engines and our car is fast.  All these drivers and teams are tough but we’re ready to mix it up this weekend in Canada.”
