Austin Hubbard Out for the Season after Surgery
Hopes to Compete in Gateway Nationals in December

Seaford, Delaware (08/09/16) – 2016 has been a season that Austin Hubbard would like to quickly forget.

“This year just seems like one big nightmare,” laughed Hubbard. “We debut a brand-new car at Lernerville at the Firecracker at the end of June and flip it on opening night. Then two weeks later I have a freak wreck in rental car, where I again flip and get banged up pretty bad. Just insane how bad my luck has been.”

While Hubbard sustained only minor injuries in his flip at Lernerville Speedway on Friday, June 24, he received more significant injuries on a passenger car wreck on Thursday, July 7 in North Carolina.

“We had been rained out at Fayetteville Motor Speedway earlier that night,” remembers Hubbard. “I was driving down a backroad in North Carolina after the rainout. The road was a little wet, and a big curve snuck up on me. Next thing I know the car is flying off the road and then bam it hits a tree.”

The wreck left Hubbard requiring several stitches for various lacerations, but the most serious of his injuries was incurred on his left foot. He severely broke his left ankle and tore several muscles.

On Monday, July 18 he underwent surgery to have two plates and 11 screws put in his ankle. He will be in a cast for the next four weeks, and then will go through rehab so that he can resume walking normally. It’s expected to be early January before he can resume normal, day-to-day activities.

While he will clear miss the rest of the traditional racing season, if his recovery allows he hopes to compete in the inaugural VP Racing Fuels Gateway Dirt Nationals at the Dome at America’s Center (St. Louis, Missouri) on December 15-17, 2016. His recovery progression will be the controlling factor on whether or not he is able to race.

“As bad as everything’s been I know that it could’ve been much worse, so I’m thankful to still be alive and kicking,” again laughed Hubbard. “I do want to thank everyone who has sent me words of support and encouragement during this tough time. They’ve really meant a lot. Right now I’m just focused on getting healed so that I can get back to normal life and racing again.”
