Baggett and Culp Lead the Way in 8th Annual Gumbo Nationals Opener

Greenville, Mississippi (10/03/14) – With the richest purse ever posted at the facility, the 8th Annual Gumbo Nationals at Greenville Speedway (Greenville, Mississippi) came to life on Friday evening with the most entries ever seen as 50 competitors registered for battle in preliminary action in the Mississippi State Championship Challenge Series (MSCCS) Super Late Models program.

David Breazeale started the night by claiming the $300 fast qualifier award with a time of 14.593 seconds around the ¼ mile oval. Breazeale’s luck wouldn’t carry over in the heat race as contact with the front stretch wall near the midway point eventually eliminated him from contention. Neil Baggett led the distance in the ten lap affair to claim the win with Brian Rickman and Eric Cooley completing the transfer cars. With the win Baggett locked into the pole for Saturday night’s $10,000-to-win, main event.

The second heat race found the driver, who registered the quickest time in Group B, Timothy Culp overcoming an early battle with Morgan Bagley to score the win with Chad Thrash rounding out the podium. Culp will join Baggett on the front row for Saturday night’s 75 lap finale.

The third heat was a wild one that found pole sitter, Bub McCool slipping back to as far as the fourth spot on the opening circuit before rebounding on the second lap to take the lead and ultimately the win with Dane Dacus and Jon Mitchell completing the transfers.

Tyler Erb was a determined driver in the fourth heat and won a battle of slide jobs with Clay Fisher to snare the win. Following the duo across the line in the final transfer spot was 2014 Greenville Speedway track champion, Duke Palasini.

Robert Baker shot from the fourth starting spot to the lead on the first lap and never looked back on his way to the triumph in heat race #5. Rick Rickman and Garrett Alberson rounded out the transfer cars.

The final heat race of the night was a wild one that found Dirt Late Model Hall of Famer, Ronnie Johnson surviving a late-race charge from local standout, Doug Showah to score the win. Ray Moore held off Kyle Beard for the final transfer spot. The race was marred by a hard crash on lap 6 between Tommy Surrett and Trey Beene. Surrett was uninjured, but Beene indicated that he may have suffered a broken hand in the incident.

Each heat race winner was presented with $100 from Bo Gordon in memory of Greg Camponovo, who passed away a week earlier in a farming accident. The $300 bonus that Breazeale received for recording fast time in qualifications was also in memory of Camponovo and was provided in part by Brent and Jimmy Barrett, who donated $250 and Jason Oswalt, who donated $50.

The 8th Annual Gumbo Nationals will draw to a close on Saturday night.  The Super Late Model portion of the program will be headlined by a pair of b-main events and the $10,000-to-win, 75 lap finale.  The NeSmith Weekly Crate Late Models will contest their own b-mains as well as a $3,000-to-win/$300 to start event.
