Jimmy Mars Wins ‘Las Vegas Dirt Classic’ Opener at LVMS!

(MENOMONIE, WISCONSIN)  Jimmy Mars, of Menomonie, Wisconsin, traveled west to the Dirt Track at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway in Las Vegas, Nevada last week for the annual ‘Las Vegas Dirt Classic.’  Jimmy, who swept the two-day event in 2007, picked up the win in night one at LVMS last Thursday, February 28.  Aboard Jess Anderson’s #H2 MasterSbilt from Mars entry, he was fourth quickest overall in Western Allstars Series qualifying and later won his heat race.  After starting from the pole position for the 30-lap feature event, Jimmy beat Scott James, Tim McCreadie, Trevor Glaser, and Steve Drake to the checkers to record the $3,000 payday!

The driver known across the Dirt Late Model community as the “Iceman” then vied for a second straight sweep of the ‘Las Vegas Dirt Classic’ on Friday, February 29, as the Western Allstars Series sanctioned another $3,000 to win show.  Jimmy was seventh quickest overall in time trials and later won his heat race.  Following a third place performance in the dash, he rolled off from the inside of the second row for the 30-lap A-Main.  In the opening laps of the main event, Jimmy's recent luck in Vegas ran out, as he was hit by another competitor and knocked out of the race with a broken tie-rod.  He was relegated to a disappointing twenty-second place effort in the final night of the 'Las Vegas Dirt Classic.'  You can view full results online at www.latemodelracer.com.

“It was another fun weekend in Vegas, aside from the incident that took us out of contention on Friday night,” commented Mars after returning back to Wisconsin.  “Jess (Anderson) provides me with great equipment when I travel out west and I have to thank him for everything.  The track was quite a bit tackier than it has been in the past, but I prefer when it gets nice and slick.  Unfortunately that was not the case last week, but we still got a win and I think we would have been right there in the mix on Friday night as well.  Luck just wasn’t on our side I guess…”

Jimmy and his own #28 Dirt Late Model team are scheduled to open up their version of the 2008 racing season in a few short weeks at the Pike County Speedway in Magnolia, Mississippi.  The World of Outlaws Late Model Series will sanction a two-day, $20,000 to win show at Pike County on March 28-29.  The last time Jimmy visited the Mississippi oval, he reached victory lane, as he captured the win in the $30,000 ‘Jambalaya 100’ last November!  More information concerning the ‘March Through Dixie 100’ can be found online at www.worldofoutlaws.com!

Rick Eckert Takes Win in Exciting Season Opener at Hagerstown!

(YORK, PENNSYLVANIA)  Rick Eckert and his Raye Vest Racing team captured their first win of the 2008 racing season in exciting fashion at the historic Hagerstown Speedway in Hagerstown, Maryland on Sunday, March 2!  The famed Hagerstown speedplant was in great shape for their season opener last Sunday, which paid $2,000 to the winner.  Rick claimed a heat race victory prior to taking the grid for the 30-lap A-Main.

After starting in the second row for the feature event, Rick ran second for the majority of the race.  However, he got up alongside of leader J.T. Spence with only a couple of laps to go and survived the wild battle for the lead, which was held amidst several lapped cars.  The driver known as "Scrub" then drove his #24 GRT / Custom entry into victory lane for the first time in 2008 after beating Roy Deese, Jr., Josh Richards, Dan Stone, and Jim Yoder to the checkers!  You can view complete results from the Hagerstown opener online at www.hagerstownspeedway.com!

“It was a really good day for us on Sunday,” quoted Eckert this week.  “The track stayed really racy despite the daytime conditions, so that allowed us a chance to win since we didn’t start on the front row.  J.T. (Spence) ran great, but we were able to get by him in heavy lapped traffic late in the race.  I feel bad that he got turned around, but I had the track position on him and it was real hairy there in lapped traffic.  It feels great to get back into victory lane and hopefully that win was the first of many this year!”

The #24 team is slated to take the upcoming weekend, March 7-9, off from Dirt Late Model competition.  They will next compete during the ‘Running of the Bulls’ weekend at the Volunteer Speedway in Bulls Gap, Tennessee on March 14-15.  A pair of unsanctioned races will take place at “The Gap” and a $10,000 top prize is up for grabs in each event.  You can learn more about the ‘Running of the Bulls’ online at www.volunteerspeedway.com!
