Boney, Wood, Brill, Rowland, and Schudy Fly CMS Championship Night Checkers!

Sept 14, 2014

(Warrensburg, MO) The grand re-opening season at Central Missouri Speedway (CMS) came to an exciting conclusion last night when 90 cars in five divisions competed in 20 total races. USRA Modified drivers took part in two main events in which Jim Moody claimed the postponed Labor Day weekend $1,500-to-win, 35-lap special while Dustin Boney drove to victory in the weekly racing $1,000-to-win a-main.

Brett ‘Woody’ Wood of Warrensburg added his name to the prestigious double-digit single-season feature winner’s list as he took home his tenth win of the year during his track championship Street Stock season. Cody Brill became the latest CMS first-time winner as he held back a wolf pack of challengers in the B-Mods while Kyle Rowland returned for his second win of the year in the Pure Stock class. The Allstar Midgets returned to CMS for one final race and it was Pat Schudy who claimed his second win of the year this season.

Nine Pure Stock drivers took part in a pair of heat races to begin the evening. Newly crowned Pure Stock champion Leroy Morrison of Raymore captured his first-heat race win to begin the night in front of Darrin Christy and Jason Ryun. Rowland went to the front in heat two with Jason Cochran and Scott Martin of Warrensburg in tow behind him.

Up next were the B-Mods as it took four heat races to sort out the main-event lineup for the 23 cars on hand. Jason Billups of Holt, Missouri darted from inside row two to lead the way in heat one over sixth-starting Josh Calvert of Moberly, Missouri. James McMillin returned to action for the first time since his frightening Street Stock division accident earlier in the season and claimed heat two while substitute driving for newly crowned B-Mod champion Dean Wille in the UCM/SAE car; Greg Truelove was second. Johnny McGinnis of Hardin, Missouri took heat three ahead of Kearney, Missouri’s Jordan Clemons. The final heat race was claimed by Cody Brill of Harrisonville, Missouri over a hard-charging Jacob Ebert.

A total of 21 USRA Modifieds competed third on the night in heat-race action. In recapping the regular race program heat races, Darron Fuqua of Mayetta, Kansas came from fourth on the grid to claim heat one in front of Tyler Schmidt and Matt Johnson. Odessa, Missouri’s Jim Moody drove to the win in heat two over Aaron Marrant and Jason Bodenhamer while Dustin Boney came from the tail of the field in heat three to take the checkers ahead of Dean Wille and Jason Thompson.

Street Stocks rolled onto the track next for their preliminary action with pole-sitter Brett Wood claiming victory in heat one over Troy Turley of Knob Noster, Missouri and Jermiah Wilson. Brian Inlow had a solid night of racing begin with a victory in heat-race two in front of Allen Perryman and Clayton Campbell. All total, eventually 18 drivers took part in Street Stock competition throughout the night.

The Allstar Midgets closed out preliminary heat-race action with three heat races for the 19 cars on hand. Pete Palazolo drove to the win in heat one in front of Kory Schudy of Republic, Missouri and Rick Murcko. Cody Baker, who won the main event the night before at Valley Speedway, picked up the heat-race number two victory over Pat Schudy and Tony Hudlin while Kenny Bowers of Olathe, Kansas bested Tyler Nelson and Ryan Kent in the final midget preliminary race.

Once intermission concluded after the heat races, USRA Modifieds returned to the track for the makeup of the postponed Labor Day weekend $1500-to-win event. Schmidt and Moody brought the field to the initial green flag as Moody quickly assumed command of the opening laps. Shad Badder made his way to second by lap five with Schmidt third and Johnny Fennewald fourth. Moody continued setting a blistering pace over the field as he began to pull away. Meanwhile Badder and Schmidt raced hard inside the top three to try and keep pace with Moody’s torrid pace.

The race ran green until lap 16 when caution flew for the first time with Moody leading Badder, Schmidt, Dean Wille, and Jason Bodenhamer inside the top five. Badder maintained his second spot through lap 25 with Schmidt, Wille and Bodenhamer in tow, all behind leader Moody. On back, eighteenth-starting Dustin Boney advanced to the seventh spot by lap 30 with fourteenth-starting Aaron Marrant in sixth.

Over the final five laps Moody simply dominated the field and ultimately recorded his second special-event win of the year at CMS and his sixth main-event win. Badder had a solid run to the runner-up finish with Schmidt in third, Wille fourth and Bodenhamer fifth. Rounding out the top ten were Marrant, Boney, Fennewald, Tim Karrick and Matt Johnson.

Rolling back into the regular race program, the Pure Stocks brought their season to a close with a 10-lap main event. Leroy Morrison and Kyle Rowland began the event from the front row but it was Rowland who shot out to the early race lead with Darrin Christy quickly moving into the second spot. It was a quick race for the Pure Stocks as the drivers were on their game for the event.

Kyle Rowland eventually went unchallenged and claimed his second win of the year as previous feature winner Christy was unable to reel him in and settled for second. Jason Ryun advanced from sixth to come away third while Jason Cochran ran strong in fourth. Morrison stayed in the mix in fifth to cap off a championship year while Scott Martin, Matt McCord, Robbie Sullins, and Lee Scout rounded out the finish.

B-Mods were next for their 15-lap featured event with Jason Billups and Josh Calvert on point for the drop of the initial green flag. In a frenzied battle for the early race lead, Billups, James McMillin, and Cody Brill all held the top spot at one point in time as drivers moved high and low to gain positions. By lap four Brill had sole command with McMillin and Jordan Clemons close behind. A yellow flag flew on lap four for Darren Phillips and Olen Stephens, who tangled in turn four.

When the race resumed, Brill held the top spot with McMillin, Billups, Clemons and seventh-starting Jacob Ebert inside the top five. After a second caution for a multi-car incident involving Stub Morris and Dallas White in turn four, Brill resumed the race with McMillin and Billups just behind. Ebert advanced to fourth on the next lap with Clemons now fifth. On lap 12, the third yellow flag flew for Darren Locke as his night came to an end.

Brill now had just three laps to complete to claim his first-ever CMS win. On the restart, James McMillin’s left-front tire clipped the uke tire off turn four and ultimately he spun from second to the infield. McMillin was able to restart and ultimately finished tenth. Brill held strong up front for the final laps and eventually did claim the win after starting sixth. Ebert rocketed to second in the final laps while Billups settled for third, Clemons fourth. Nic Bennett capped off a successful return to CMS as he blasted from sixteenth to claim fifth. Kameron Grindstaff also advanced multiple positions from twentieth to finish sixth. On back were Richard Brainard, Josh Calvert, Mark Forrester, and McMillin.

The Allstar Midgets were up next for 15 big laps of action with Pat and Kory Schudy on the front row for the initial start. Nelson and Palazolo were close behind at the start but it was Pat Schudy who shot out to lead the initial laps. Previous feature winner Tyler Nelson advanced to second early on with Palazolo maintaining third. On lap five a frightening accident involving standout driver J.D. Black occurred off of the turn three area as the race was red flag so medical attention could be rendered to Black.

Eventually Black was transported for further observation. As of press time and with permission from Black, this statement came from his spokesperson as of late Sunday morning. “J.D. has multiple fractures in the C1; no surgery is required at the moment. He is in pain but he is doing better. We are very lucky to have the racing family's support. We are to get some x-rays tomorrow and we have an excellent doctor taking care of him.” Please keep your prayers and thoughts on J.D. and his family as he continues to recover from the accident.

When racing resumed, Schudy held onto the top spot with Nelson and Palazolo still hounding him for the lead. A final restart on lap 10 slowed the field one more time with now sixth-starting Cody Baker beginning to apply pressure for the lead. Schudy didn’t let the pressure get to him and held off Baker’s furious charge to pick up his second CMS win of the year. Baker finished a strong second in front of Nelson in third. Rick Murcko advanced from eighth to fourth with Kory Schudy fifth. Rounding out the top ten were Jacob Davis, Tucker Klaasmeyer, Jared Solomon, Tony Hudlin, and Michael Sosebee.

Street Stocks made their way to the track next for a 15-lap main event. Brian Inlow and Brett Wood began the race from the front row and Wood blasted in front early on to take command with Inlow in tow. Brett Cox and Allen Perryman tangled off turn four to draw an early race caution on lap two and once the race resumed Wood still held point with Troy Turley and Campbell giving chase.

At the halfway point of the race Wood stretched out his lead with Turley and Campbell doing all they could to keep pace. Inlow now ran fourth with Jay Lyle gaining momentum. Not long after, Lyle suffered mechanical problems as his promising run came to a disappointing end.

In the closing laps Wood survived one more restart after Jermiah Wilson’s night came to an early end. Clayton Campbell found a strong line in the final portion of the race to advance from fifth on the grid to second but in the end no one had anything for Wood as he claimed his tenth win of the year. Campbell was second followed by Turley, Inlow, and sixteenth-starting Bobby Raybourn. Completing the top ten was late-arriving Brian Ziegler, Jerry Schmidt, Herb Dannar, Jeremy Curless, and Warren Hawthorne.

USRA Modifieds returned to the field for the final event of the 2014 season for the regular race program portion of their competition. The front row was made up of Gower, Missouri’s Dustin Boney and Mayetta, Kansas’ Darron Fuqua. These two drivers set sail for the 25-lap main event with full intentions on taking the win. Fuqua was strong on the high side with Boney running the preferred low line in the opening laps.

Matt Johnson, Jim Moody, and Tyler Schmidt all ran inside the top five behind the lead pair through lap five. By lap ten, Fuqua was still close to Boney trying to figure out a way around the leader. On lap 12, fourth-running Moody’s car suffered engine woes as he exited the track in a plume of heavy smoke bringing his bid for two wins in one night to a bitter end. Dean Wille also suffered mechanical issues as his top ten run came to an end on the same lap.

For the restart Boney led Fuqua, Schmidt, Johnson, and Terry Schultz to the green flag. Fifth-starting Bodenhamer’s night came to a disappointing end after close-quarters racing contact with Badder in turn four sent him to the back for the restart; Bodenhamer ultimately rebounded to finish eleventh. By lap 15 Boney stretched out his lead on Fuqua who was now under pressure from Schmidt as the pair ran hard for second.

For the final ten laps of the race Boney seemed to be on cruise control as a furious battle ensued for the runner-up spot between Schmidt, Fuqua, and Matt Johnson. Boney masterfully worked his way through lapped traffic keeping any pursuers behind him and eventually went on to claim his second feature win of the year at CMS.

Tyler Schmidt put in another solid performance to finish a strong second followed by Fuqua in third. Johnson ran strong all evening and came away fourth with USRA National point’s leader Terry Schultz fifth. On back were Badder, Marrant, and Dalton Kirk from seventeenth on the grid, Jason Thompson, and Tim Karrick.

Next up for CMS is the Third Annual Hog Roast, which takes place on Saturday, September 27 beginning at 7 p.m. in the CMS Tech Barn on the pit side of the speedway. There will be food, fun, music, and games for all in attendance and a bar available. A $5 cover charge will be collected at the door.

Keep your browser pointed to www.centralmissourispeedway.net in the coming days for a preview of the 2015 race season.  CMS wishes to thank all of the dedicated fans and drivers for an amazing grand reopening year. We look forward to seeing everyone at the Hog Roast or the end-of-season championship banquet to be held at the Courtyard by Marriott Adams Pointe Conference Center in Blue Springs, Missouri on Saturday, November 15 at 6 p.m. For tickets, contact Susan Walls at 816-229-1338 or Karen Darling at 660-229-0952.
